How To Build Conan in 5th Edition Dungeons and Dragons| D&Dized Fictional Characters
We do a Conan the Barbarian build for 5th Edition Dungeons and Dragons. With all the media to draw from for this character build we have to pin down which Conan we'd build. We score the Player's Handbook and other 5E D&D books to come up with the version of Conan we wanted to build. With all the novels, movies, comic books, board games, and video games we decided to go with Arnold Schwarzenegger movie version of Conan.

As much as I love the 80s Conan movies, for me Conan will always be the one from Robert E. Howard's original stories. And in that case he would start out Human with the Outlander background. He would have two levels of Barbarian from his early days (no primal path, as he Rages *maybe* once a story), then he would take 4 levels of Rogue taking the Thief archetype. After that it would be 12 levels of Battlemaster Fighter, or 12 levels of Champion Fighter and he takes the Martial Adapt feat. Book Conan would have quite a few feats, one of which I would say is Mage Slayer as he's killed multiple spellcasters. his stats would probably look something like this: St- 20, Dex- 16, Int- 15, Wis- 14, Con- 17, Cha- 14.

Very late comment, but I ABSOLUTELY, 100% agree with you here, though I think I'd take one from Con and give one to Int. Wis and Cha are absolutely his dump stats, but with how educated he is, his Int should be no lower than Dex and Con.

I think he would be more champion as he can take wounds that should kill most people and while his battle tactics are effective they aren't brilliant or cultured. His most impressive battle choice as a general is a pincer move which was used by almost everybody in human history.

I always felt that Conan was kind of Croms' Avatar the way he would always survive impossible fights and challenges in the Books. Conan doesn't know it and Crom only manifests in moments of stress or life and death.

Conan should have near superhuman (physical) stats. STR 18 (if ANYONE must have it) CON 17 (just not to overkill) DEX 18 (See strength) INT 11 (not stupid, but also not learned) WIS 15 (keen instinct) CHA 16 (has a way with people, also, he does become the king) Barbarian 2 (Venarium, Frost Giant's Daughter) Rogue 1 (Tower of the Elephant) Barbarian 3 (Berserker path) (Hand of Nergal, Rogues in the House) Fighter 3 (Champion, GW fighting) (Black Colossus, Queen of the Black Coast) Barbarian 7 (People of the Black Circle, etc) Fighter 12 (Red Nails, Phoenix on the Sword, The Hour of the Dragon) Background: Outlander Skills: Athletics, Stealth, Acrobatics, Perception, Survival, Intimidation, Animal Handling Tools: Sea vehicles Feats: Tavern Brawler, Savage Attacker, +? There are a few more that could fit such as Great Weapon Master, Mounted Combatant, Lucky, Inspiring Leader, depending on which Conan one wants to emulate. All in all though, 5e does a good job at emulating Conan if one picks from the Barbarian (berserker) and Fighter (Champion) classes.

I'm surprised no one suggested Ranger/rogue. Coming from reading the old black and white comics, his speed/tracking/exploration is as important as his strength and thieving. I would start variant human (cause he is human) for the extra feat, taking savage attacker, and then go with ranger, hunter conclave choosing Favored enemy: humans and horde breaker. Maybe 10 levels of ranger, and 5 levels of rogue thief (probably inter-mixed, not one class than the other). Super sneaky, really fast and able to function superbly in both cities and the wilderness.

In the books by Robert E. Howard, it would be very hard to pin down what class Conan is. I don't feel like he would ever really be a thief, because I don't recall him ever doing anything like Lock Picking. He is pretty skilled in athletics in general, sailing, and sneaking. Believe it or not, I think Conan would probably be a Paladin. He has a the moral code of a warrior, and he worship's Crom. In some instances, Crom will even help Conan if he thinks Conan's death would be anything less than that of a Warrior. In some versions of Conan, Crom has even blessed Conan's weapon in order for him to be able to damage his enemies. Crom has healed Conan from poisons and protected him from magic. If I were going to play Conan, I would play him as a Paladin, and give him skills that reflect his prowess as a Hunter. He does steal, but he probably isn't in the Rogue class. Conan would probably be best portrayed as a Paladin who uses most of his spell slots for Devine Smite, but sometimes uses them on himself for some Buffs or Debuffs. To play Conan properly, the player would have to be conservative about when they use their Paladin Spells The closest kind of Oath I think Conan could be played as would probably be Oath of Heroism or Oath of Glory.

Picking the subclass is the only issue. Barbarian works great. High dex makes being stealthy work without the prof. Armorless def is a must and you can't multiclass because Conan could scrap frost giants....so you need Primal Champion at 20.

i think for conan i'd go half-orc wolf totem barbarian thief and either champion or battlemaster. if you were gonna have a higher level build with enough barbarian for brutal crit (that's 9) them just 3 in champion gets improved brutal crit (!) so with 9,3 and 3, i think i'd fill it out with 3 more fighter for the 6th level stats/feat and the rest barb for relentless rage.

This is what I would do. Human, Variant with tough feat. Finishing it off with 3 levels in rogue, with the thief subclass.

5 Battle Master( extra attack, action surge, second wind, proficient w/ all weapons and armor, optional feat ), 4 Path of the Zealot ( "Unyding" as mentioned, d12 hit die, danger sense, optional feat ), 1 Rogue ( really just needs that Expertise, put it in athletics and stealth ), or if you want to go higher, put 2 more into rogue and pick Assassin subclass ( As much as he is a thief, he kills way more than he steals ). Conan's not much of a talker, so dump stat would be charisma. Gonna want to focus on Dex, Str and Con, in that order ( You'll want to get as high in initiative as possible, maybe taking the Alert feat at lvl4 Battle Master )

Guys I hope you are taking care of yourselves, and your families with this awful virus going around. Guys, this was an amazing build, but we have to make Conan human if we are going by the movie, I know regular human is whatever, so choose human variant, put his +1's into str, and con, and then give him either the athlete, or the tough feat.

No need to be negative, even when you are wrong. Cimmeria and all the other lands happen to be set in the Hyborian Age afore the fall of ancient Atlantis, all the people of that age are superior [physically/spiritually/acranelly] to the humans who come after except for the Lemurians who kept living after. As is stated in 'Lovecraftian' lore that is the greater opus. You can consider Conan to be for the 'Lovecraftian' opus what Wulfgar was supposed to be, and Drizzt Do'Urden is for the 'Forgotten Relams'. But hey putting exclamation marks will make your argument more valid.

Conan: A rage filled barbarian (all the way) with criminal or urchin background for stealth. You are gonna need Athletics, Acrobatics. Variant human starting with Alert feat. Second feat Martial adept. That would only make the start of his career! Conan was an outlander, a sailor, he fought in cavalry, as an archer. Later he was a general and the king of Aquilia, so gonna need some leadership to!

I think the movie Conan fits really well as a pure Barbarian, he only needs one thing that doesn't come from the class. HE really should at least pick up danger sense, and the fast feature and brutal critical and some form of rage. He doesn't need fighter from the movie, he isn't exactly showing off especially amazing martial skills. The only proficiency he might pick up is traps because he made some traps, which isn't even a standard proficiency. He has no lockpicking skills in the movie, so don't bother with that. HE brute forces almost everything when he isn't sneaking, he just knows his weapons, which he gets from Barbarian already. It is possible to justify difference primal paths. Book Conan is a lot more diversified and will probably only pick up 3-5 barbarian levels and likely a few of Rogue and a lot from either battlemaster or Champion path of fighter, he does end up being a captain in a military and running a ship at another point so Battlemaster where he can give benefits to others as a use of his superiority die would make sense since he can inspire others.

Here's my basic literary Conan build for a level 10 character: V. human with the Tavern Brawler feat for starting abilities Str- 16, Dex- 14, Con- 14, Int-8, Wis- 12, Cha- 12. Background Sailor/Pirate (call it Reaver if you want) since he does become quite the accomplished seaman. First level Barbarian (he does Rage from time to time) then 3 levels of Rogue for the Scout subclass. This will give us all the skills we need and a solid base to build on. Next we want 6 levels Battle Master fighter. Why? Because Conan is known to be a great tactician and have all sorts of nasty tricks up his sleeve. This also allow us to bump Str to 18 and get the Alert feat so now we have Conan's cat-like reflexes and his famous strength. For fighting style I'd go for Dueling and use a Short sword (or a re-flavoured rapier if you want to powergame slightly) to be able to Sneak Attack. He actually very seldom uses a two-handed sword in the books. This is just a basic Conan Build. He's strong, agile, a great warrior with quite a few utility skills and he has some leadership abilities. He's not book-smart but he's quite clever and he has eight skill proficiences, four with Expertise. When he continues to level up he will gain more Fighter levels which means being able to find his opponents' weaknesses through Know Your Enemy, more HP through the Tough Feat and being able to cap of Strength at Fighter level 12. With Expertise in Athletics he is one of the strongest humans out there. B)

Now my memory might be a bit poor of the books, it was a while ago I read them. Conan is a warrior thief who develops an incredible intellect. He is well traveled and more civilized than the nobles of civilisation. He's nimble and fast, strong but is more notable for endurance. To make him in DnD I'd prioritise Constitution, then Strength, then intelligence, Wisdom and Dexterity tied and a little charisma. Well take this build to 12th level as I rarely see campaigns go higher. First of all Fighter to Level 3, go battlemaster. Take the maneuvers that emphasize utility and control. Then go 3 Rogue Thief for the mobility and climbing, expertise in acrobatics and Athletics, tho emphasize physical prowess. This should keep you good for damage due to sneak attack. Then back to fighter to Level 5 for Multiattack. Then I'd put in one or 2 levels of barbarian in, for that hint of barbarity a d savage strength. Then go Fighter Rogue to your heart's content. In roleplaying to me Conan type characters should be bold and direct with a tendency to some preparation. Distrustful of petty mages etc. In combat he should be a dynamic playstyle leaping in using maneuvers and a variety of weapons. Do cool things use that bonus action to chuck a knife. Swing from a chandelier to enter combat be a badass

Except that it isn't (the rage ability that defines the D&D barbarian isn't evident in the Conan character). And ignoring the Ah-nuld performance, Conan's described as being extremely quick, not just strong. He also spent years of his life as a thief, a pirate, a brigand, a mercenary, and more.

N01H3r3 No, Conan's method of fighting is to charge in and deliver savage attacks overpowering his opponents, which is the Rage ability. He's never depicted as an artful fighter like the Three Musketeers, John Carter, Drizzt, etc. The fact that the barbarian is based entirely off of Conan is one of my big gripes about the class. It's certainly iconic in fiction and fits in the game but it would have been nice if we got some archetypes that were more reflective of barbarians in history. There's no way for me to create a Mongol or Hunnic inspired Half Orc Barbarian who is ranged because barbarians in D&D are Conan and that it.

That bears almost no resemblance to the Conan I've read, but I'm thinking almost purely the original stories (having spent much of the last year working on an RPG that specifically focussed on REH's original version of Conan) rather than the decades of pastiche materials that came after Howard's death (comics, movies, etc). The Conan I'm thinking of was cunning, ruthless, knowledgeable, and frequently wore armour into battle. Even so, "charge in and deliver savage attacks" is not "berserk rage" - the berserker rage that defines the D&D barbarian comes from Icelandic and Old Norse stories of unarmoured warriors who fought in a trance-like, animalistic rage, barely able to distinguish friend from foe.
@thorneosgard
@thorneosgard 7 жыл бұрын
Umm yeah, rage is defiantly evident in Conan's character. Weather you wanna use the books or the movie. Not trying to be contrary when I say this, but look at the Battle of the Mounds from the movie. He comes running out of the tombs, screaming, with a wild-eyed look on his face and his sword raised. As far as the books go, there's plenty of times he goes red on someone. Allow me to quote a few passages from Iron Shadows in the Moon. "You Hyrkanian dog! mouthed the apparition in a barbarous accent. "The devils of vengeance have brought you here!" Kozak! ejaculated Shah Amurath, recoiling. "I did not know a dog of you escaped! I thought you all lay stiff on the steppe, by Ilbars River." "All but me, damn you!" cried the other. "Oh, I've dreamed of such a meeting as this, while I crawled on my belly through the brambles, or lay under rocks while the ants gnawed my flesh, or crouched in the mire up to my mouth-- I dreamed, but never hoped it would come to pass. Oh, gods of Hell, how I have yearned for this!" The stranger's bloodthirsty joy was terrible to behold. His jaws champed spasmodically, forth appeared on the blackened lips. (If this isn't rage I don't know what is) "Keep back! ordered Sah Amurath, watching him narrowly! Then later on after they fight it says this: "Quarter!" he gasped. "Quarter?" there was a quiver in of frenzy in the stranger's voice. "Quarter such as you gave us, you swine!" But, you don't have to take that one story just as an example. Look at the opening of the Scarlet Citadel. Conan's the last one left out of his army and his enemies can't finish the job because he's so wrathful that he seems like a giant. It takes a wizard to bring him down. As far as his backgroud, eh...if you're going with the one from the 80's movies, like the guys at Nerdarchy did, then I'd probably go with gladiator. That seems to fit in my humble opinion. But from the books, I'd say Outlander or even criminal if you're wanting to encompass that "thief" element. Which brings me to my next point. I don't see Conan's class as thief. He doesn't back stab. He doesn't pick locks. He's sometimes stealthy, but no more so than a stealthy a sneaky fighter or a ranger. And far as the movie's go, his little archer friend actually makes the comment "You're too big to be a thief." So yeah, that's just my two cents. Sorry if I rambled a bit, but I really love REH's works.

See, I tend to distinguish the "Barbarian Rage" ability seen in many forms of D&D from "anger and wrath", mainly because "fighter, but naked and angry" is a really weird niche for a class. The kind of fury that distinguishes D&D barbarians is more than just being really angry, IMO - it's a technique, a particular mental state adopted by a rare few, attributed with legendary properties (berserkers in myth and legend, whom fire and iron could not stop, and who had a strength beyond that of ordinary men). Conan, for all his great mirths and great melancholies, doesn't seem quite the type to gnaw upon his shield and go utterly, mindlessly berserk... But then, I don't think D&D is particularly good for emulating anything except D&D, and I've not spent much of the last couple of years working on a Conan RPG to refrain from mentioning it here: Core rulebook: www.drivethrurpg.com/product/204217/Conan-Adventures-in-an-Age-Undreamed-Of-core-book Free quickstart adventure: www.drivethrurpg.com/product/174829/Robert-E-Howards-CONAN-Roleplaying-Game-Quickstart?sorttest=true

Idk, I kind of view characters from the sword-and-sorcery pulps to be on a lower power curve. In D&D-type games, 15+ level characters start to become demi-god level beings and I don't quite feel like Conan was that level of hero. -Nerdarchist Ryan

Conan in the modules from AD&D was a fighter/thief so nothing new here I'd say no barb at all and champ/assassin or could go thief if skills vs damage was a concern. 15th odd level 10/5 f/r

You will never be able to get him. He is just too strong. Maybe a 1-on-1 campaign, but it doesn't count for me. A character shouldn't be the star of the whole show, just at their points.

Goliath? You've got to be kidding me!?! He's human, just at max height and weight. I'd start at barbarian 1, for the background, unarmored defense, and a few rages a day. That's it. Instead of rogue levels, I'd take the athlete feat for the ability to climb your speed and boost your jumps. Does movie Conan pick any locks? Nope. The only roguish things he does is climb, sneak, and poorly disguise himself. Those are skills, not class abilities. At level 2, go fighter (champion) and stay there for whatever you want. Conan is not a level 20 character (that's King Conan). Mostly tier 2 for the whole of the movie. That's probably 3 ASIs, at level 9. Boost Str and Con. Movie Conan is probably a 14 in Dex. Get Great Weapon Master to represent his mighty blows. That's movie Conan.

Thing is, he was a mighty warrior when he was a teenager; class-and-level zero-to-hero doesn't really suit him in general.
