Worked in shipbuilding industry for 8 years; then one of the marine mechanic from my old job told me that, I should go to school and learn about "Heavy-duty Mechanic" trade. When to school for 9 months, completed the foundation and first year. Currently, doing my second year. Absolutely love the trade. It's fun. Always learning something. My motto is, "think and work positively, positively will bring positive result". Still long journey ahead of me but won't give up. :)

Another awsome episode! You guys are doing the content this field needs to see. I think Cam is as good as it gets for representing our industry. I just got my own truck after 20 years in the field and it's the best move I've ever made! I have two teenage boys and want to teach them both how to make good money and be their own man. We have spent generations telling kids not to work hard and to do smart jobs. Well that has now put the ones that can and will do the work in serious demand. That's the takeaway from it all is, learn how to fix things and you'll never look for high paying work again. Keep up the good work on the channel and thanks for doing it!

I couldn’t agree more with you! I am also an HD mechanic from Canada (ON) and I am also seeing a serious lack of enthusiasm to join a trade and if they join, a lot don’t have motivation to learn (and earn!). Cam is hilarious to watch and this video is one of the best “BS” videos there is on the channel yet! Keep it up fellas.

Having knowledge is probably the best way to be confident in customer interactions. Some customers are always assholes, but most are just average people. Even when doing tasks you have never done out in the field, its always the best to stay calm, analyse the situation and then start working instead of freaking out over the fact that youve never done something before. In my experience building basic knowledge takes about a year or two, depending on the preexisting skills someone has, once you have that basic knowledge its acutally fun to get to work in new situations. Probably the best way to get into a new field job, in my experience, is to have a coversation with the customer at the start and let them know what the cause might be, when arriving. Because once they notice that youre into the subject they will bother you less when working, even when you dont know how to fix the problem. Showing confidence, even when youre insecure will always make field work much easier, especially as a young technican when working for "know it all" type customers. You always gotta fake it till you make it in beeing confident.

You should never stop learning in your trade. 3 episodes for a hand rail and not even the good kind, gees! 😉. Expose a way big fella lol. Jk. Where I work, a field mechanic applicant would be considered before a shop only mechanic. Every time! Get out on the road and earn respect. Great vid fellas.

I’m not a mechanic by any means I build roads and highways in New Jersey but it’s the same in every trade you have to be thrown into situations that might be a little more than you have experience. There was no I can’t do that when I was in my apprenticeship. You gave it your best shot and don’t give up that’s all and if you keep doing that the older guys will respect you more and are more likely to help you along faster if they see your good worker and a learner no one wants to waste their time training someone that’s going to quit in six months

I mean I’m pretty lucky I’m already in a dodge 550 2014 mechanic truck with crane and all I’m on cal for the company I work for if any small issues come up I can handle it :D not gunna lie I love my baby call her the great white Buffalo

Done many field jobs done 45 hours with 1 apprentice to get a D8 out of field that was going to flood we both earned our stripes on that job but the victory of getting it done was awesome customer was ecstatic over how we stayed on it . Got it out 4 hours before heavy rain was a true team effort customer and his 2 helpers and customer as parts runner !!!

Love the channel just parked my service truck after 25 years in one on remote sites in northern Manitoba. Have a shop job now with 3 apprentices. I always tell them never be scared to ask questions no such thing as a dumb question just dumb apprentices.

Thanks for the video. Got a interview on the 14th. For an apprenticeship. I have 9months of trade school experience. In Automotive I did learn alot but for me it lacked repetition in order to learn confidently and not be seconding guesing yourself. I noticed through out my work history and education. I don't really trust my existence or I'll second guess my self and end but being right the first time. 😂😂 I'm a hard working man and take pride and satisfaction in what what i do. I just noticed im not as skilled to people's liking or expectations. hoping this apprenticeship guess well

Being a road dog has some negatives but those negatives turn you into a good tech and usually a tough s.o.b. Going from an Ag tech of 7 years to a HD off road tech and your videos are great for some of the basics (tracks)

I’m just starting my HD apprenticeship, coming from a hobby mechanic. Confidence in my ability and strength has always been my issue. I also struggle with thinking that others lack confidence in my ability or knowledge because I’m a chick. Wether they think that way or not, I just gotta keep learning so that I know what I know and eff everybody else 😂 Lucky for me the guys in the shop are very encouraging and knowledgeable but I do get some looks when I go on site. Really been enjoying/bingeing your videos. Maybe one day I’ll make it back out west and have my resume end up in the mail box

I'm a self employed mechanic. Been repairing auto and light truck plus small equipment. I've been trying to get into bigger equipment and have had no luck. I even bought a f350 service truck. But I'm either not quick enough to get to it or I think I'm getting undercut. I've basically untooled my truck and concentrated on what I've always done. I've got stories on the few service calls I've been on, basically got screwed. And had a hard time getting paid.

That's too bad man! It definitely varies by area. In BC, we have lots of industry. Forestry, construction, aggregate, mining, agriculture etc, and relatively few mobile mechanics to keep everything moving. I would stick to your guns and charge what you value yourself at and don't sell yourself short. People who can't afford you aren't your customers.
