I am also in my 70s and I didn't like that they lied to us (this was supposed to be done in just 15 days). So tell me how did the grass on top of the house grow in just 15 days' time?

@@S.A.Mitchell The title said "Start to Finish 15 days" but there could have been days in between in which he was somewhere else. He had to bring in the chicken, salmon, tools etc. from someplace! I believe he meant he worked 15 days, but not all at the same time. How else would he bring in provisions? I didn't see a cooler there or any way to keep the food cold. I don't believe he lied. It's all in the way people perceive what he said in the title. BTW, I've had grass grow in a few days with the help of Miracle Grow.

I don't know why this excites me while at the same time relaxes me. As a young boy I loved building forts in the woods. Now I am 44 and I think 2024 I'm gonna give it a shot ....I'm gonna build a sweet fort . For my fort though I will use pallets as I have access to about 200 pallets.

It's important to be on high ground, as in not the house to be on ground but the ground itself on high elevation level. I guess that is why also in the video he had to walk to get to a river, since it's probably on a lover ground level. Back in a day Europeans and Russians built underground houses (we in Serbia call them zemunice) but all of them were on high ground levels, so you didn't had much problems with moisture etc since it drains away from you. These were winter time houses that were great against the cold while during summer etc people lived in houses above the ground level were more spaceuos and open.

I loved watching this. The end result reminds me of those traditional houses in Scandinavia, only a very small version. It just goes to show that with a bit of elbow grease you can accomplish great things. If only more young people developed these skills. It seems to me that most of them these days don't have any that doesn't involve a computer screen. No brains and no imagination! You have been respectful of the forest too, and not taken anything that hasn't fallen. There are great lessons here. Thank you, Alex.

The main problem is with a dugout cabin is if it rains it can flood so either make some hollow pits in the dirt under it so water will go under instead of in or make a trench thats large that is 4 feet or more deep so water will flow out of the cabin.

I would guess that he cuts out the part where he cuts the trees down, removes the branches, and frankly some trees are just perfectly and naturally straight. So the question that you should be asking is what kind of tree/wood he is using to build this home? That is the most critical part of information that was left out. If you want to build this exact structure, then you should be asking what kind of wood was used.

This wouldn't be hard to do. Yes it would take awhile and is labor intensive but not hard to figure out. It gets hard when you build it correctly and overlap the logs like a log cabin by notching each one the correct amount so that it sits just right on top of the one under it but doesn't leave any gaps where you notched it. This guy just used a ton of nails to hold it all up.

If you study the small Viking bed from the Gokstad ship burial of circa 800 ad of Queen Asa and you pay close attention you will see how a hand hewn bed can give you a natural set of most likely comfortable springs. The center tusk tenoned bed slat prevents the bed sides from expanding out while the loose tenons above and below it can flex in their oversized through mortises. Rather ingenious. Must have been a common practice. Can be easily shaved down for flexibility and with no corners on the cross sectioned long oval slats they won't cause you much pain.

Not taking away from anything you've done in your videos - these little shelters are fantastic & so inspiring! I do want to ask about the wood used for this project - I assume much of that was prepped in advance of this build. How long did that take? About how many trees were needed for this? Aside from that question, do you rent these shelters out after they're finished, or can hikers use them for free? Also, can you please provide links to the portable solar cells used in this video. The Energizer battery box should be easy enough to find.

Thanks for asking this. I saw the timber used and noticed it was processed, having all branches and bark removed ahead of construction. I imagine that would be a laborious task if modern equipment was not brought out to the site for the debarking. I am also genuinely curious what steps were taken and what tools were used. I'm sorry the best of the internet isn't in your replies. Good luck with any woodland projects! It's nice to know I wasn't alone in thinking about it.

The eve looks better with the end of the logs exposed. The charred flat slabs were nice, but this way, it looks like there is more headroom and, in my opinion, looks nicer. However, overall, I like the construction, the detail of showing the build, and the overall look of the cabin. Looks beautiful, great job.
