Osvald with armsmaster can actually be (I think) the hardest hitting character in the game. Armsmaster allows him to put on 3 fire or ice boosting weapons on him. Then, with peak performance, boosted start, deal more damage, price of power, equipped fang of ferocity, and someone else using Alephan's on him, you should be able to get close to 99,999x3 on him with the buffed elemental spell+latent power when a boss is broken. The latent power is important because it basically doubles your damage for this. This can outperform armsmaster Hikari, but it does mean that you lose out on having a physical warmaster (which is a lot simpler) so I don't really know if it's worth it. Nice to have on one or two late bosses though. The concept is similar to sorceror Therion in the first game with his two fire boosting weapons.

I'm experimenti with thief Osvald and I'm quite happy with the result - Whole new coverage: 2 new weapons (sword\dagger), 1 new element (darkness). BP eater can much shields for low cost - Mooneater + Firestarter = double boost his fire skills. Basically a budget armsmaster (which could go up to 3), but this way I can leave the armsmaster slot for Hikari, and Osvald is still really fucking good. - A half-naked Osvald (arcanist, dancer, hunter) feels wrong. A thief Osvald with a purple coat feels just right. Osvald mugs people, he's half a thief already. All you have to do is make it official. I used the merchant subjob on him to farm leaves when I needed it tho. Juicy 40k Bifelgan's Bounty really speeds the grinding.

I think Stone of Truth from Castle is a must have for him and as an Arcanist pair he's a waking powerhouse of magic damage no matter what. But then again I might be biased coz I just love how he looks almost naked as Arcanist

I picked Osvald as my protagonist on my first run and I found him to be a devastating arcane powerhouse who came through for me more times than I could count 😳

There are two accessories that I run on Osvald that make shim godlike. The first is Stone of Truth, which makes it so he is ALWAYS under a permanent spell intensity effect, basically making him more akin to Cyrus in the first game. The second is Laila's Amulet, which is +100 to Elemental Attack, +100 to Evasion. I have his second class as Cleric, and he NEVER needs to boost healing in order to keep the party up at or near full.

Armsmaster on Termino the cleric is guaranteed breaker and healer. Slap on full power for latent and use the six weapons to start any fight. Break 6 shields immediately ransack a town with the path action and equip sp regeneration.

I haven't tested it yet but my thoughts are that you would want to grab Stone of Truth on Osvald, and that if the effects of it are not permanent then have him or someone else as an Arcanist Seal it so that you can have him with permanent higher tier magic spells. At least that's the idea I'm working towards, but it could turn out to not be great once I have it in hand. Figured it'd be worth mentioning though because it seems like a go-to accessory for Scholars. Arcanist or Cleric secondary dependent on the amount of setup involved.

Stone of Thruth works very well with Concentrate, definitely a must have for Osvald

One more thing… I would argue Merchant Osvald is great as a Mugger but late game you’re not finding yourself needing to mug many of the enemies as you can just use Agnea to get what you need.

Physical just outshines magic end game as Hikari can reach higher damage with lesser setup so I built Osvald as a reliable breaker/healer that can dps when not healing. Scholar/cleric for that +1 action per turn goodness. One true magic spam with Stone of Truth accessory is decent without relying on Temenos latent power. With Castti as BP battery you're pretty much set for OPness with the 4th character slot as flex spot for any character you want.

Stone of truth is permanent and makes osvald into a killing machine with out the need for set up the problem is it still takes a accessories slot.

I made Osvald an apothecary simply for the sprite. I don’t have archaism yet but I’ll probably go that way afterwards

Osvald always is in a party with Castii (merchant) to help with his slow setup. Full BP turn 1 for Aelphons then donate BP for full boost on the break. Otherwise you're right, he's too slow

I used merchant on him a lot for rest but you bring up some fair points

To get the best out of his latent power save BP break the target use all 4 levels of BP then latent power and you get a massive damage dump.

The only bad part about arcanist is u can't get it earlier like arms master or inventor its locked behind a boss thst u ha e to be higher level to kill

A good mugging build for is Osvald is giving him the merchant subclass and spamming sidestep since a surprising majority of npcs use single hitting physical attacks

Pretty slow build but with talent and analyze enemies until unlock all is a way to bulid his bp for huge damage especially if enemies has one of the 3 basic elements as weakness.

I’m almost at the end of the characters stories, just over 60 hours in and although he was my second character after my main protagonist, he’s the one I’ve played with the least and I think I really undervalue you. I only pull him out to grind him up to finish his chapters. I think I’ll use him more postgame once I concentrate harder on designing teams I actually use and aren’t just trying to accomplish story goals with. I know a lot of people love him and his story is one of the best. But I’m still learning how to use him to his best abilities and with which party members. Any help/suggestions from comments is GREATLY appreciated!

Im saving up agnea for my hikari team but I have osvald with scholar temenos. I have him give osvald alephan’s wisdom. im planning on giving temenos the permanent advanced magic accessory so I dont have to worry about aoe advanced magic. I also have partitio for thespian hired help for SP and magic up and ochette for her latent ability to decrease magic vuln. I love the this set up so far

Osvald is good story wise, but battle wise I find him to be lack luster.

I have been screwing around with an armsmaster build giving him all the ice damage enhancing weapons i have (a sword, axe and bow) and turning him into a cryomage basically, slap on a conjurist ice buff and sixfold strike deals some nasty damage

It does take a little while to set up Osvald, but I usually have him ready to attack by his second turn. Turn one, I use items to bring BP to max, and then I use his divine ability. After that, I use the inventor class to boost everyone's BP since Agnea has it. By this point, my other characters have brought down shields, and then I use Osvald's Laten power, and he deals 10,000+ damage with each hit. Him and Hikari together can easily deal with most bosses I come up against.

there is a rod with more elemental attack that raises the potency of dark AND light damage that is perfect for the arcanist. and is prob required for every malice/blessing build

It would have been helpful to talk more specifically about a mugging build since you're stuck with solo Osvald so your priorities are different

Ppl sleeping on osvald dmg 🤣 his latent power increases dmg of the spell you usually wanna do it if you break an enemy and if you have a merchant on ur team you can pop alephans wisdom than on the merchants turn just donate bp and fry the boss but by the time osvald has this setup Throne or someone else can also do their high dmg move as well plus I have osvald’s magic at 999 with my build so he just melts and his best jobs would be Arcanist, Cleric, or apothecary I don’t see the need to put him on a melee job cause ur just wasting his really high magic stat

I’ve actually been somewhat disappointed with Oswald mechanically. But that may be because I didn’t use him until my second set of 4 characters. By then my physical characters were gods.

You are not wrong about anything with Teach. In fact I think you’re being too kind to it. It’s arguably the worst skill in the Octopath series and the only one I never bothered using. Even Stroke of Genius has it’s own uses and I would argue that’s a C Tier skill at best and it looks head and shoulders better than Teach. Maybe you can do the followig: Aracanist Osvald -Seal of Diffusion -Boosted 3x Stroke of Genius -someone donates 3 BP to Osvald -Boosted 3x Teach -Galdera kills you anyway. Like it’s such a terrible way to sink all of your resources into something so redundant. Like you said, it’s just bad dancing.

Hello, love the channel and I'm really enjoying the game. Having trouble however... Can't figure out where to find divine necklaces, it'd make the boss fight guarding the rusty bow chest a whole lot easier to do. If any one knows id appreciate the tip! Thanks

I don't see how Study Foe can compare with Learned Skills, Concoct, or Beast Lore. Sure, it's definitely nice to have, but Hikari can used Learned Skills to have Deep Analysis which reveals two weaknesses and enemy HP for just 6SP, and that would still leave him with four other Learned Skill slots free. It IS a super nice quality of life thing, no doubt, but it isn't the standout character-defining, always-useful feature like Learned Skills, Concoct, or Beast Lore. Especially since Analysis comes with the Scholar job and serves well enough in the overworld (to say nothing of Deep Analysis). Study Foe also has the problem of being totally useless against foes that you already know all the weaknesses of, as well as the problem of (if unlucky) only revealing a weakness that you have no ability to properly exploit, potentially costing you a lot of turns/BP if RNG is not in your favor or if you're facing off against higher leveled enemies and don't have the luxury of losing turns to bad luck.

Specifically Stone Of Truth and the SunShadow Staff will let you turn your brain off with osvald as Arcanist.

I don't have the game yet, but def want to and be a caster. I never played this kind of games much. But i'm confused here. So if you go Osvald(scholar) and 2nd job cleric. Does this mean you don't need Temenos in your party cause you are a cleric already? And why would you make another char's 2nd job scholar if you have Osvald already? As someone with no knowledge at all, just seeing videos, i want to play with Osvald, Temenos, Castti, and then Ochette or Throne. But Agnea seems to be better in most videos.

Osvald's fire, thunder and ice skills cost 28 SP for me. I'm near the end of the game. Can anybody tell me why that is?!!?

I have to agree with Teach being really bad. It's especially bad when you consider he can use arcanist sub and buff the entire party with a boosted stroke of genius. There's just no reason to use Teach at all in my experience.

Pair him up with dancer, it's funny.

Osvald Kit is realy weak Early game and gets stronger late game due to the Items that alow him to snowball into a god tier magic class user.

We all know the best secondary class is hunter, because we get to see the 40 year old bearded buff man with some cute kitty ears >~< (I have 0 clue how old he is and i do not care to look it up)
