I lost speed when I changed to a 5 string. But i gained a massive amount of groove in my playing!!!!! Motown, funk, hard rock, country, church, and the blues gained massive amounts of groove! Tks for the lesson on how to improve my speed!

Young brotha.... from someone who has been climbing back into the bass arena for the past year and a half after a 35 year layoff, I've got to tell you that I have learned so much from this single video! My fretting hand technique has been my nemesis since I started with this crazy instrument when I was 14 (a long damn time ago)! FINALLY, I have found some exercises that can help me with the uncomfortable process of gaining finger dexterity and strength. I am going to commit to these exercises as a daily practice to help overwrite the bad habits and technique I created for myself over the years.I'll just keep doing it until it gets done... thanks bro and keep the vids coming! There's hope for me yet.... LOL!!!! Peace and chicken grease!!!!

Thanks for the video! As a very novice beginner I can say I appreciate it. It's amazing how a bunch of basic stuff that seems like it should be obvious doesn't really occur to you when you're new at something and feeling overloaded. You present this kind of information in a simple and easy to understand way that makes me think, "Oh yeah, that makes perfect sense."

Thanks for the great video, usually i preffer shorter ones with quick information but this was great. Didn't put much effort into this exercise cause i hated the finger cramping but u showed me what it's really about: pushing your own boarders. So imma work on that.

Played drums for just shy of 30 years but just started recently on bass... when the first thing you mentioned was a metronome I knew the rest would be worth my time lol. Great stuff man.. the metronome is essential for all instruments practice, and like you eluded to, most essential for the drums and bass. When I played live for a few years I saw a lot of different level local bands. You could have a killer vocals or guitar player etc. and they would be an ok band, but if the drums and bass are locked in and solid, like a human dr. beat, the band is gonna be great even if every one else is iffy.

I'm just echoing what has already been said. I just started "playing" the bass a month ago. I've been wanting to play it for years. I am taking weekly lessons, but I'm embarrassed by my lack of ability. I know that I need to be patient. I know that skill doesn't just jump on you. I watch bass videos nightly and have marveled at how skilled bassists' fingers move on the fretboard. I told myself that I will do that too eventually, but didn't know how to get there until this video. I really appreciate the explanation because the reach and the independence of my fingers were killing me. None of the other "lesson videos" broke it down. I can't wait to practice. Thanks a lot, Isaac.

Practice scales and modes over and over and over and when your fingers are bleeding practice more. Only by putting in the time of suffering and complete repetitive practice is the only way to build a solid foundation and then the musical ability will mature on its own naturally.

I love your tone man. That is a beautiful bass. I love the exercises. I do those as my warm up as well. One finger per fret up and down the neck, alternating finger sequencing. One thing my first guitar teacher told me 43+ years ago was that if my fingers cramp, something in my posture or technique or both is not right. He taught me to begin my warm up with ergonomic finger exercises (on google). Then take some deep, cleansing breathes and relax my shoulders and for the first 2 minutes of my warm up, don’t pay any attention to what I’m playing, but instead focus on my breathing being calm and smooth so I could maintain a normal convo while playing. When I got to playing 32nd note runs while not holding my breath or bearing down with my hands and fingers, I was good to go. He said to smile while I play as well.. just wanted to say that. Love what you do man. Keep it happening!✌️

As a new bassist the hardest thing I find is plucking fast on different strings (even adjacent strings), do you find yourself kind of using the string your on to launch your hand a bit for the jump to a higher string?

How long have you been playing? And how long will it take to be professional or to play gigs? When was your first gig after how long practicing? And did you go to a music school? Did you take private lessons to prepare for school? When should I alternate fingers on the right hand, or just wing it like you. Basically I just wanna do it like you, whatever it is bass-ically. How often should lessons be scheduled? Sorry for blowing you up. I'm eager to learn. Thanks. PS. how do I start learning to read bass clef..?

Great video, Im a bass player for over 40 years. Only piece of advise is if you are going to teach, use standard tuning. New students dont understand your preference. Everybody should be on the same page starting out or else the student will get confused and eventually move on to one of the 11 thousand other bass teachers that uses standard tuning😊
