Wicked talk. Fortunately, the battery situation isn’t really that hard anymore. I published a video and write up of a great configuration that fits in the XR box with no modifications, that works with a couple of aftermarket BMS models. It’s great to see the spread of the DIY spirit. Wonderful podcast.

Crazy how much the ride has changed just from FloatLife Fest haha, I raced on it to help bring in attention to VESC and push it forward, but I'd be absolutely lying if I said it wasn't sketchy 😂 Now, with Mitch's IMU filter and my own tune, I can pretty confidently say I enjoy my VESC board more than I have any board from FM. GT power (and beyond) in the XR platform is truly the best of both worlds, and like you guys said, this is basically the perfect outlet for enthusiasts who are after hyper-specialized setups that Future Motion just isn't in a position to offer. I've honestly never been more excited about the future of the sport and can't wait to see where things go from here 🔥

Just FYI, the bar isn't nearly as high as everyone is making it out to be. I went from zero electrical knowledge last August when I bought my first XR, and built my vesc just fine. There were a couple speedbumps cuz I was so inexperienced but the online knowledge and community is there to help and back you up. Love my 84v vesc now. Hit 32 before pushback and I weigh 190. I'm also just a factory worker so you don't need to be loaded.

Hey guys. I'm about to tear down an old Plus and convert it into a VESC. I've got an XR, a Pint, and this soon to be VESC Plus, with about 2k miles between all three boards. I loved this episode for a lot of reasons. First and foremost I think it really sums up the current feelings of the Onewheel Community on a variety of topics. From Jimmy Chang to Bodhi, we have all said we love the GT, but he hate the turn away from mods and ability to DIY your board. You guys nail the justification for why VESC is growing rapidly right now, what's right with the XR, what they nailed with a GT, and why we're unhappy. You also do a good job of defending FM, who does hold a lot of liability and risk associated with making this happen. I appreciated your takes. Second, this serves as an amazing record of where we're at. In a few years this video is going to be more of a record of vesc history than a build guide and that's perfect. This is one of the most complete archives of where the community is at on building vesc boards and will serve as a source of reference for a long time! Last, you guys show the best parts of the community. We just love to ride. We love our boards. We want to be able to make our boards the way we want to, unique to every rider. You guys hit the nail on the head again and again, and make me so stoked to get out and ride. Float on my friends!

I've been making electric skateboards and battery packs for years. You can totally build your own battery pack with as many cells in series and parallel as you'd be able to fit within the frame. Source your own BMS and solder it in accordingly. Simple enough and it would make a good crew video I think. Cheers!
@SirWrender
@SirWrender Жыл бұрын
The problem isn't the fundamental creation of the battery pack. I can do that. In fact I HAVE done that before. The challenge is fitting the battery pack within the frame. THAT is the wall we're already running up against. A 20s2P pack is just a litttttttle too big, but with VERY heavy modification we got it to work.

I also wouldn't trust a lot of people to be careful enough with the batteries to build their own packs. You've got as much energy per weight in a lithium ion battery as TNT and while not as explosive, it can have very catastrophic failures.

There’s been this judgement on VESC that I’ve seen because earlier firmwares that people had worked on wasn’t amazing, but with the software being as… honestly daunting with every little variable being able to be changed and laid out in a fairly technical way, I knew that people just needed time to be able to really hone in on how to make everything work together and fully understand it all. It’s a complicated device with a lot of components that rely on eachother to work and not harm someone by dropping them. Not as straight forward as a bike motor or longboard motor.

Check Smarter Every Days video about the helicopter thing. If the engine dies in your aircraft you are MORE likely to make it in a helicopter, because you can pretty much always make a soft(ish) landing by auto-rotation. A plane can only glide so far to find a large enough open space to not crash when landing. The helicopter only needs to find a tree/building free area much smaller than what the plane needs to land safely.

Absolutely get one, it is the best purchase I've made in a while. Without having tried a VESC I would recommend getting a Future Motion board first to get used to riding. It takes so many miles to get comfortable and understand how to properly ride and they make it very user friendly, jumping in on a VESC I would think would create a more negative experience than it should.

I have a OneWheel which I ride for fun and I love it, but I never travel with it because it's just so inconvenient. When I'm not having fun and just need to go places, convenience is most important to me. The OneWheel is slow, has short range, no suspension, long stopping distance, when you're not riding you have to carry it and it's a heavy awkward shape to hold. I commute across a very rocky gravel road and farmland at 30mph which would take me twice as long on the OneWheel and I would risk injury every day. Again, even though I love the OneWheel, I see it as more of a quad-bike: a fun recreational activity, but not a serious mode of transport.

You mentioned that charge-and-ride is sketchy. On a VESC, is it sketchy from an electronics perspective (if the physical stuff like quick disconnects and protecting the port is well-handled?) Is running a parallel battery like Wren described for the enduro race less sketchy? Until we have swappable batteries, it seems like one of these is the best choice for long uninterrupted rides, I'm just trying to get a handle on whether it's a bad idea even if implemented well. Thanks for the video!
@quinnfoster1234
@quinnfoster1234 Жыл бұрын
There's a slight risk but electrically if it's set up right it should be okay. If you use two different batteries and one of them is weaker than the other that can cause a problem. Also wiring coming out of the board is quite exposed and could be shorted so you definitely have to have a fuse.
@SirWrender
@SirWrender Жыл бұрын
"Charge-and-ride" as it's specifically implemented is sketchy simply because it's not how it should be done. This routes power through the control board's charging circuit while it's being used. The purpose is to use another battery in parallel, however the Onewheel prevented that so the CnR method was really a hacky compromise. The better method is to splice in another battery in parallel directly into the battery wires going into the Onewheel. THIS is how it should be done, and is fairly common practice in other PEV vehicles like skateboards and bikes. The sketch factor here comes in that you HAVE to make sure the two different batteries are at the voltage / charge level. If not, it can overload the other battery and cause a fire. If they're sync'd then there isn't an issue!
@quinnfoster1234
@quinnfoster1234 Жыл бұрын
@@SirWrender "floating" voltages should match 😋
@DoctorDugong21
@DoctorDugong21 Жыл бұрын
@@SirWrender Thanks for the reply Wren! I suspected as much, I was just imagining CnR might be less sketchy in a VESC with a separate circuit and a charge-only BMS. And yeah, keeping the batteries at the same voltage in VnR seems like a hassle. In any case, since my comment I've been thinking more about swappable batteries as the solution for longer rides. Mario Contino's 20s2p pack looks like it would fit between the rails, so I'm thinking a gasketed battery box lid that hinges up taking the footpad with it might be possible. Then a quick release lever (like on a mountain bike wheel) at the tail to lock it down and apply pressure to the gasket. My Little FOCer is in the mail as of today, so I'll start with a simple build and then consider getting fancy.

I think the issue with FM as a company and VESC is that Onewheel has become somewhat like Velcro. Any device that looks like a Onewheel, in the eyes of a layman, IS a Onewheel. FM has such a monopoly on one-wheeled skate-stance electric boards that it's becoming a problem for them, since their community is making aftermarket batteries, modified controllers, and this and that. FM has been in the game so long that they're always going to hold liability in the public eye for things that may not be their fault OR their product, as long as it occurs on something that resembles a Onewheel. That's why the word VESC leaves a sour taste in their mouth, because soon the community will be flooded with fully-custom boards that have zero FM parts and still look like a Onewheel. I can't wait 😎, competition breeds innovation.

Yea I actually hate FM and want nothing to do with them. I have a float wheel and just love it and feel so much more confident on it. But when people ask me about it I just say its a onewheel, cause the onewheel really is a finished product in a way that not even the float wheel is, and I want people to enjoy onewheeling. Plus once their hooked I can always turn them to the dork side with more ease.

Do you think it’s possible to find schematics of the vesc and solder everything together (or at least order board with smd and solder the other components ?)

Yep! Look up the cheap FOCer. It's designed by the same person as the VESC based ESC seen in this video. It's less than $100 if you solder it yourself. The next version is releasing soon ish.

You can make a vesc for sure by getting a pcb and line traces printed and soldering components on it.. you then need something that can take arguments in logic like a raspberry pi or a arduino.. and a bunch of relays .. its doable ( the first ever onewheel was a arduino board ) but not easy

My XR has lost torque. It’s gotten easy to push the nose or tail to the ground. Overall seems to have less power. I changed the battery out with another used battery I bought off eBay. It did not make a difference. I wonder if I bought a battery just as bad as the one I replaced it with. Could it be my motor or do you think it’s still need a new battery?

The timing on this is impeccable. My XR fried it's BMS just outside warranty. Future Motion will not sell me a replacement BMS, they want me to ship the entire board (at my expense) to San Jose from Miami, then charge another $60 just so their techs can confirm what I have already diagnosed. I'm so over this company.

I just can't get over how these things are still so damn expensive! Normally building yourself is cheaper but this looks like it would actually be more expensive once you're done. Is there no way to decently build these for a grand total of around $500?

You absolutely need a BMS. Without it, the battery will eventually blow up when your charging.
@SirWrender
@SirWrender Жыл бұрын
No it won’t. The controller acts as a BMS when charging and riding. It can’t monitor the individual cells but it DOES monitor the overall voltage. So it does prevent overcharging and overdischarging.

@steevethebeeve
@steevethebeeve Жыл бұрын
Wow, big fan!!! While I respect your opinion and most people will likely get away with not having proper protection circuitry on a batty, there is a high enough possibility that one or more of the cells voltage will diverge from the rest of the pack, that it's probably best to not recommend it. Unless you have a Analog Front-end (AFE) monitoring each cell you can't guarantee the safety of the pack. Over discharging a cell is less likely to cause a problem than overcharging will, which is what happened to me with my unprotected 12 volt auxiliary battery on my 1985 Honda xl250R electric converted motorcycle. My battery blow up while charging after about a year. I thought that I could get away with it by checking the balance of pack with a voltmeter regularly, but I went a few month without checking and boom 💥. The explosion actually dispersed most of the cells so there wasn't much left to burn and I managed to save the rest of the bike:) I understand that modular BMS systems can be pretty expensive which, is why I made my own based on the BQ76952 from TI with active cell balancing. That said, there are some cheap enough options, that it doesn't make a build prohibitive. Especially if you plan to charge overnight in your home. Again big fan, I love how you've made science cool when your have the chance in your videos! P.s. next time you are in San Francisco, come try my motorcycle, or checkout the onewheel night ride:)

I'm not sure but I think future motion also has a patent for the design (and any similar one's). Like this format of E-mobility format. So the onewheel name, they have a trademark...but also have a patent of the design format of a onewheel. Correct me if I'm wrong.

While I understand that FM would see VESC as competition, I don't think the need for VESC would be as prevalent if not for all the issues with the GT and what in my opinion are poor choices regarding right to repair. Regarding speed limits of the GT, I'm sure those that are willing to spend 23 minutes watching the podcast may have already seen this video, but if you haven't, here is Jeff Adair clocking in 32mph on a GT. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f914h7dymduveoE.html. Something like this is pretty much exactly what I was hoping for! Suffice it say, and to probably very few's surprise, I am not exactly convinced of the quality of the onewheel GT. One of my many gripes with the GT that changed for the worse from the XR is the rails going from being anodized to powdercoated. Specifically because of how powdercoating negatively affected heat management. Now, I'm no laywer but you'd think one can reasonably assume that if you inform someone of any/all potential risks of trying your VESC, and they make the choice to do so in spite of that information, and were not forced to, the responsibility would fall unto the person who made the choice. I'd at the very least expect it to carry some weight as a part of a greater legal argument.
