Hi, my names Dan Delavan, I'm the owner/operator of Plaza Cutlery in Costa Mesa, California.
We have a great selection, we also have a website, plazacutlery.com and today we're going to be talking about knives. Bowie knives, in general today, are used for camp and some people will use them for backpacking. We have them come in all the time and try to tell them, it's too heavy.
Don't take a bowie knife and some listen, some don't. But you want to usually use it as camp knife. It's not a knife, that in most cases, we're going to use. They were invented as a fighting type knife and a camp knife. So you want a stronger knife, you don't want to get anything where the blade is really thing unless it's just for decoration. Some of your custom makers make some really fancy ones so you can get some more elaborate ones, but in reality if you're spending a couple thousand or more for it, probably not going to use it. So then it doesn't matter to much.
But if you're actually going to use it, usually you want around a quarter inch stock. High carbon steel of some type. Some of the better stainlessess in your 154 CMs, ats 34s, s30bs all work out really well. Good bowie knifes gonna run a couple hundred dollars. You know most of them that are less that 200 dollars, usually the quality's not that good. They're usually made in China, Pakistan, and those are pretty much all poor quality. There's one company, Hanwei, out of China that is up in their quality, but I don't believe they've done any bowie knives yet. If it's more of a decorative bowie just for collecting and so forth, there are remakes of some of the old english bowies and so forth.
The makers pretty much all know what they're doing and they've been trained, by usually another knife maker, so they know what they're doing.

My Cold Steel 1917 Frontier Bowie had a price listing of $199 in it's catalog but I was able to get it for a bit less than that thanks to my local knife dealer. I don't know if it meets your criteria for a good knife or not but I'm pretty happy with it: all things considered.

... Expert? I do not mean to be critical but this man seems to not be to well researched in this subject. I do not consider someone to be an expert if they get 4 things wrong, two of which can be very easily found with a fast Google search. 1) A lot of people use them for backpacking. Yes they are heavy but depending on the climate you can justify the weight by carrying a large knife with a folding saw in place of an ax. 2) S30V is a great steel but not for a large chopping knife. It does not have the high toughness, less so with 154cm but I still feel the same. All he says is carbon steel with out mentioning that 1095 is the most widely used steel (possibly of the best with a good heat treat). 3) Good bowie knife? Define "good". If you mean prime fit and finish, then yes a few hundred dollars, but if you want a TOOL, not at all. The Ontario SP10, made in America out of American 1095cv for $50. The Kabar Becker BK9, made in America out of American 1095cv for $80. How about the Cold Steel TrailMaster, made in Tiwan, but of an American O1 tool steel, great fit and finish for $130. And he missed one of the most Classics of them all, the Case Bowie ($120) and Buck 119 ($60). 4) Hanwei DID MAKE A BOWIE, and it was in production when this video was made.

I would like to recommend Bowies made by Linder, they offer great quality for a reasonable price. Most are made of perfectly heatreatet 440A (some in 440C,C60 or 1.4034) which performs pretty good under real use, and many models are available in different sizes.

Agreed! I used to own the Linder "Kentucky Bowie". I took impeccable care of it, and now my brother-in-law owns it. It's an absolutely first-class Bowie knife! By the way, the steel is 440C, which is actually considered a high-end stainless steel.

Say Heah Mr. Delvin . I just bought a Puma Bowie 2, It's very similar to the Puma Original Bowie but without the Bolster. I got the black box that it came in and nowhere on the box or knife does it say I or made fro German Steel and assembles in Asia. Mine says Handmade in Solingen, Germany. Like I mentioned, I bought it because what I use it for in the bush, I like more a Saber Grind instead of a delicate Hollow Grind, although the knife is very sharp, Mine was never sharpened or used. The Sheath is also top quality. I can tell that difference. I tried searching for it and I seen one that was sold at e-bay but it had to be cleaned up for $100.00, abd one like mine by a different seller for - 165.00. But I can't find out what Steel it's made from. O found from a popular seller that it's discontinued and I found out they were made in the 2nd half of 2002. Any info would be appreciated. Thank You in advance.

You never thru hiked, I see. Let me help you then. I carry an Opinel no6 for my hikes. Now as a camp knife, a Bowie knife loses to a Mora knife. As a hunting knife, Bark River wins. As a general survival knife, a Bowie knife fits this role perfectly.

It's not ex aptly a Bowie but my Swamp Rat Rodent 6 is one of my favorite camp knives, .y Rodent 6 started out as a Tactical Knife but in Mors Kochanski ' s book he mentioned a knife should be strong, what better stock than a tactical knife, Swamp Rat has a Custom Shop so I had mine thinned down and the top gaurd taken off and now it look's like a beefy Ratmandu on steriods, yes its a bit heavy, but in the bush there is no question in my mind I can depend my life on it, I know I can chop, and baton with it I had it thinned down and it's a very good slicer, the choil helps me to use it on finer cutting for traps etc. I personally don't mind that weight and I can wear it on my hip all day long .y larger knives I use as survival knives and I will pair them off with a small knife. But for a camp knife that if robust enough to do almost everything need to be done in camp my go to knife is my Custom Rodent 6 even when I'm seperated from camp or backpack I know I can depend on my Custom Rodent 6 I just feel safer with a robust knife over a smaller lighter knife.

The knives shown in this video are tiny Bowie knives, if you can even call them Bowie knives. These knives are like Mickey Rooney impersonating John Wayne. A real Bowie knife needs to be large (9”+ blade) like the original. This video is correct, a real Bowie knife is not a backpacking knife. Jim Bowie used a horse to carry both him and his knife.

Pretty presumptuous to assume to tell another what is too heavy to carry. Sell knives, keep your advice. Also, anyone that spends 2 grand on a knife, is NOT going camping to begin with.

There is no need to spend 200+ on a Bowie, but 20 is already way too low to get something of decent quality. The 50-150 range is the best place to look at in my opinion, there you get a good compromise of quality and price.
