Owning a luxury yacht is the dream of many, and achievable for more people than you may think.
Some busy business owners just don't have time to figure out the purchase process though, and so are put off exploring yacht ownership due to time constraints.
This series of videos is designed to take the mystery out of yacht ownership, showing not only the process involved in buying a yacht but also the costs.

Yes, very informative. The more information you share with us the more tempting is the idea of buying a yacht. The world is changing really fast, technology provides the majorities with tools that can make anybody rich overnight. Some of your viewers might have the money needed to own one of these technological beauties, at any time. Some others, probably, are lucky enough to already have it. My intuition tells me you are the kind of person one would enjoy doing business with. Beautiful yacht. Thanks for sharing!

Another fabulous episode. The snappy mixture of glamour shots, layout walkthroughs, cute graphics, and practical information make it both educational and a joy to watch as a cinema unto itself. You just keep getting better and more polished as a producer while keeping a down to earth personal presentation in an otherwise ostentatious subject matter. One can feel both the excitement and the prospective relaxation of indulging in this world of yachting.

I not only love that you show us, as the name implies, yachts for sale, but you give us behind the scenes information when it comes to building yachts and you've included information on actually purchasing a yacht. On the flip side, how much different is it when _selling_ a yacht? Different question, do yacht owners typically interact with the crew when using the yacht? I've seen some yachtee (sp?) training videos where they mention the crew isn't supposed to talk to guests (at least, when the guests were British) and I can't imagine owning a yacht and not wanting to talk to the people I employ to maintain the yacht, making sure they're in good spirits and morale is high.

In general yacht owners are very friendly with their crew, often developing life long friendships. Having said that, the crew are there to provide a service so shouldn't expect to be able to sit around chatting to guests any more than a waiter in a restaurant would expect to. Problems occur when there is too much familiarity though. On a yacht with a sizeable crew there has to be a chain of command, otherwise crew members tend to go to the owner instead of the Captain every time they want to complain about something. Recipe for disaster!

I really enjoyed this. One thing of note that I did not see is slip fees or costs associated with berthing in a marina. Currently I am about to close on a 41ft. Survey was $1,100, finance is 20 years at 6%, and Coast Guard docs and title transfer fees is $700. At the end of the day, I hate to use the word "affordable" when buying a yacht, but a reasonable sized yacht like the one I am purchasing puts the dream within reach and allows you to get a taste. As things get better and with time, maybe a Pershing 80 will be in the future....

How long does it take for a team of architects to develop a custom design with unique features? And how about renting a shipyard etc.

When you see all the associated costs with yachts, even relatively cheap ones like this, you really understand why people charter them. Even if you made a million dollars a year, you would have to think twice about buying this yacht so you really have to have some serious money to buy one of those big boys with a full crew.

Good video. Almost had a heart attack with the yearly cost of it untill you mentioned it included financing. If your buying new might be good idea to finance. But if you have the money and are buying used, no massive depreation, than pay it in full and save the interest.
@ThierryPasteur
@ThierryPasteur 4 жыл бұрын
That's not so easy. David mentioned at the beginning of the video that he plays the role of a business man who knows how to let his money work for him. In that example, if the future owner of that boat can invest his money for more than 5% profit it comes cheaper for him if he finances his yacht because in that way he makes more money with the still available liquid assets than the 5% interest rate of the financing contract costs him.

@venom5809

It's still kind of fuzzy math and you are still losing a ton of money. You still have a million downpayment that's tied up and you have all the other costs that are there for something you use relatively very little and you have the depreciation. I suspect chartering it for the actual time you use it would be better in the end. $2.5 million invested into a business would get you about $500,000 a year in your pocket give or take, you could put $200,000 of that towards charters and probably come out a lot better off.

I have to admit you are the best for helping people understand the yachting industry better. I have a question about yacht registration. If I house in the Spain but I'm a resident in the UK and I buy a boat for the med, should I purchase the boat in the UK or in Spain? Where would the registration of the boat fall?
@Yachtsforsaleblog
@Yachtsforsaleblog 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Whuzak, If you are buying a used yacht then the transaction takes place wherever the yacht is lying if it is already VAT paid, and in international waters if not VAT paid. You don't have to register the yacht in the UK just because you are British...there are many options available but I leave it to the experts to advise on a case by case basis.

Great video as always David.! Every time I see Antibes I remember walking down those very streets! However, I do take exception to getting miffed as asking the current owners running costs, and here's why. As you clearly mentioned, this ship is in unusually great condition, well run and of course we don't know the current owners usage. Something I would find out. Then knowing the current running costs will give a very good baseline to maintaining that yacht condition with that usage. If the Yacht was in terrible condition, then the current running costs would also probably reflect that and be a guide for what it's NOT going to cost to operate. My usage will of course be different, no two are probably the same, but having some history as guidelines is never a bad idea. Much like knowing the sales prices of other Pershing of similar year and conditions to judge the validity of the asking price.. Your thoughts would be welcome if I'm way off base here. Thanks and hope you;re enjoying Monaco. I did not make it over, sadly.

Hey Chet, great to hear from you! I think I'm getting more irritable as I grow older...but it always seems to me that the yacht broker representing the buyer should be able to give advice on running costs to his client rather than just asking the Seller's broker what HIS client spends. Just seems a lazy way of doing business. Monaco Show was amazing! It would be great if you could make it next year!

I 100% agree for me Pershing is the best of this style of yachts and the 80 is most likely the best size as you can (if you are an experienced yachtie) use it with just some friends without the need of expensive crew aka fixed costs. I found a 68' DeFever available locally where the broker listing specifically mentioned that the asking price includes all taxes. This grabbed my attention simply because the norm here is for listed price to be plus taxes. For the yacht I mention, $450,000.00 CDN with adding taxes, 12.5% sales tax, 9.5% marine tax so taxes alone would be an additional $99,000.00 CDN. Where with taxes paid it is only the $450,000.00 CDN listed. I think this is the best way to show why a VAT paid listing, or taxes paid listing is actually significantly lower cost to the prospective buyer.

Most of these vessels are charters , meaning you can rent a boat for a week and enjoy it and if you are nice, perhaps talking to the crew will let you find out from them what problems the boat may be experiencing. That will help make the decision to pay the 10% or just a fraction of the down payment and just walk away.

Just my personal view: Any M/Y that needs a captain is too big for (long) weekend use - I just dislike the idea of having crew on board. Frequent weekend use also eliminates chartering to off-set costs. A 50' M/Y is enough for most people, and I can take a 43' sail yacht anywhere with space for 4 in comfort on long trips (4-6 weeks).

Unless it's the law, there is nothing forcing a person to sign an MOA which is skewed to the vendor and broker. Just like real estate. I have bought a few houses in my time and I decide the terms to complete the contract. 24 hours is ridiculous. I would ask for at least 2 weeks and if the vendor and/or agent don't like it, I would walk. It's a lot of money and presumably the vendor has a good reason to sell.

I plan to purchase a yacht in the future but am not looking to charter it for the first few years. Will my cost for crew be higher than a yacht that will be chartered? Should I offer more so that I can compete with the charter yachts for the best crew members? There have been so many factors in my purchase that your videos have helped with. A lot of considerations I had not thought of have been answered. Unfortunately I still have many more questions before I decide to jump into ownership over a simple charter I can have my event coordinator book. I look forward to your thoughts.

Very informative, but cut out the whickety whick music. I have been in the music industry for over 30 years as both a performer, producer, and now engineer. Last thing I need to hear is my work while trying to review a place to relax. Plus...wrong choice of music bed.
