To capture even more light you can hang mylar space blankets around the sides. They are reflective, strong, and you can get them for around $1 a piece. I use two or three layers. I used those Walmart shop lights and mylar blankets on a wooden frame to make a very cheap grow tent to overwinter tender plants in my garage.

I worked in a research lab that used massive amount of tin foil for various things. I found it works very well to assist in helping the lighting as well.

I very much want to start seeds indoors. I already have the same shelving as you do. I was quite concerned about what kind of lights to get, and the cost of the lights. This decides it. I went to my local Walmart website; it says they have them in stock. It's tough for me to leave my house, but I'm going to try to get there today and get those lights. Thanks Gary. I tried these exact lights and honestly, I don’t think they were strong enough. I had seedlings and planted them all at the right time and temp, proximity to the lights, etc but they were all very small with the exception of pumpkins.

I also combine a 3000k and 6500k light for growing flowering plants, 5000k is great for growing greens, and 6500k is great for starting seedlings. With out door flood lights, you can make a 400 watt 'grow light' for around $40 with both sufficient red and blue. But you DO need to shop smart.

What do you do as the seedlings get taller? I have always worried those shelves did not allow enough room for the fixture and growth? I have purchased seeds and neem oil from you and really enjoy your common sense approach!

Thanks for the order! Well you can raise the lights. The bottom of this one, with the light raised high, manages most of my plants. But when they get that big, they can actually be put by window and such. They are less dependent on the light. I see you have that light bulb 3 wings I have one round with 4 wings, is that one be enough for one flat table only 4-5 trays with containers like yours on bottom shelf you have red ones. Thanks for the order. I use it for extra light on plants that are like 6 plus weeks old. As is for seed starting it is good to cover 1 flat or tray when germinating. This video is a lifesaver. A simple explanation of an affordable, realistic first-time setup. I am however struggling to find much info on the impact of a setup such as this on your electricity bill. Would a setup like this for just two flats really only cause a minimal increase? I rent my house and am hoping to figure this out before I buy lights. Thanks so much for all your vids. How to know when the plants are too close to the light? I got the 5000 lumens and they are about 3/4 inches of space to light.... would the leaves get yellow? Or what else to look for? Maybe a picture would help😂

I have a whole series on it for 2020 if you want to watch it. But stay about 1-2 inches if you are around 3000 lumens for first 4 weeks or so. As time goes forward you can raise lets a couple inches and leave them on less. Not an exact science. Staying at 2 inches the whole time works. @@THERUSTEDGARDEN thank you! Unrelated: I’m in zone 7A. First year with seed starting system, I’ve been buying seedlings before. I used a hybrid approach of starting seeds in Aerogarden and some with seed start mix in mini green house as well as trying peat pods. I did very well with must of seed starts but I started my peppers and tomatoes waayyy later than I should’ve. I have dozens of seedlings, most with maybe one true leaf, several with 2 true leaves and approx 2-3” tall, not exactly the size I’d like to have them on May 17. I would’ve like to get seedlings several inches tall in the ground by now, but instead I have half my seedlings in a small greenhouse and the other half under grow lights indoors (Aerogarden lights with seed tray w/ cells on top w/ soil), I’m hoping I didn’t mess up a good tomato and pepper harvest this year as I’m still weeks away from getting them in the ground. Any advice is appreciated.

Super cheap. Best way to do it is look up wattage calculator on line. Check the wattage on the light you want and you will see LEDs are cheap. Couple bucks a month cheap. 1 set is good for 2 flats. 2 sets can manage 4 flats. It is up to you. If you watch the video, notice how the flats are on different shelves

If I decide to grow anything next year, I can only grow indoors. I'm already at my limit for potted plants outdoors. I have not seen grow lights; but, have seen shop lights. I wouldn't want to use the lights just for seed starting. I would want to use the lights for growing completely indoors. Like peppers, tomatoes, and other things. Is there anything that I should not try to grow indoors?

Last year I overwintered a tomato hybrid with grow lights and a plastic dry cleaning bag. My goal was just to keep them alive until spring but they did better and actually had some blooms on them by Feb. I bet if you use the mylar reflective sheet and lights on for 16 hrs you may get some results. Also, you need a fan or to shake the blooming plants to self pollinate. Its worth a try. Good luck.

I went to all the trouble of buying LED grow light strips on Amazon. Top shelf had four strips and was sufficent, but I only used three for the other two shelves. Ironically, I only got them because the shop lights I got didn't fit my wire shelf. Not sure what to do with them, trying to find info to compare them is difficult, but I believe I can use them for an indoor greenhouse. Have you ever worked with or tested LED grow light strips before?

This is a great bit of advice I may well try it, but... Just wondering, the garden ones generally advertise that they have 'red wavelengths' which apparently is important for plant growth. Clearly yours are working for you but do you know anything about the red wavelength needs of a plant in this case?

Hello! I bought the 4ft 5000 lumen /5000 K Walmart lights and have a wire shelfing unit. Do I need to use 1 or 2 lights per shelf? How much distance from the plants? How many 1020 trays will fit under the lights (not sure if I should put 2 long-way or 3 perpendicular to the light)? Thank you!

I use the most basic timers I can find. I would just but the cheap timer that you see that isn't digital. You just push in the pins and it spins. I use timer for all stages of growth. Ok 5 yr gardener here. This year I decided to start veggies from seed, 85% of what I sowed 2 weeks ago is germinated. I bought a 4 4ft bulb fixture with led bulbs and have NOT turned them off since I sowed the seeds. I see you recommend 12- 16 hrs of light, so my question is can I ween my vegies off of light? should I do a little at a time? say 6hrs for a few days them 10 then 16hrs over a few weeks? also I have not fertilizer yet, and wonder if the adjustment in light time and fertilizer would effect them? Yeah they need a dark period of 8 hours so just do that. They will be fine. And its time for some very dilute water soluble fertilizer. You can give that to them now. i agree. 2 ft is not common. the lights in the video are 4 ft. i grabbed 2 ft from home depot but they are only 2500 lumens each. tey fit perfectly in my green 4 tier grow tent from aldi.
