How to Calculate Shear Flow

Shear flow is used to calculate fastener spacings, glue strength, or design welds to create composite sections from smaller components. It's calculated as Shear Flow (q) = Applied Shear (V) * First Moment of Area (Q) / the Composite Section's Moment of Inertia (I).
After a little more discussion of shear flow and its uses, I show three examples of calculating it in an I-beam.
