Since at the petrol pump we would not measure the petrol in KG, therefore we would do the calculation in this way:- Density= Mass/Volume. Say we fill our tank with 1 litres of petrol at 750kg/m^3 density. Therefore Mass= Density X Volume Substitute: Mass = 750kg/m^3 X 0.001 m^3 ( 1m^3 = 1000 Litres) Mass = 0.75kg or 75 grams If the density was 720kg/m^3 The amount of petrol we would get = 72 grams Which is 3 grams less. Note that volume would not change in both the cases, it will remain constant only mass will change. Role of Temperature in Density: We know that When we increase the temperature of Solid it expands, likewise if Liquid and gases temperature rises it also expands, in liquid case expansion happens in the form of Volume changes, i.e Volume will increase if we increase the temperature. So let's look into the equation again: Density= Mass/Volume Now from the equation we can see that Volume is inversely proportional to Density. Therefore if Volume increases density decrease and vice versa.
