Many monitors don't have accurate colors out of the box. Fortunately, you can often correct this by calibrating your display. How do you do this, and do you necessarily need expensive hardware?

Things like this make me glad I'm colorblind I mean sure I can't be a police officer, fireman, do any special ops infantry in any military, be a pilot, probably shouldn't be an electrician, doubt many surgeons would be happy if I can't tell the blue body thing from the red body thing, can't drive in Australia... but I don't have to calibrate my monitors.

I've used Lagom's LCD test for a long time to calibrate my displays and it's surprising just how good you can get the color profiles if you work through the entire thing a couple times. Testing against a colorimeter, as long as your careful and have good eyes you can get it pretty close to your monitors optimal calibration. Having had to do this multiple times over on the same display, I highly suggest backing up your monitor's color profile if your monitor provides software to export and import settings or if you really have to write down the dialed in settings. While the display will degrade over time and require adjustments, it's a lot easier starting from your previous settings than factory defaults.

Like Linus mentioned, rental certainly is a viable solution. Far and away the best option (short extenuating circumstances you’d probably be aware of if they applied to you) for either rental or purchase is the xrite i1 display pro. It’s accurate, fast, and seems much more shelf stable compared to others in my personal [and wide, anecdotal] experience (which is important in a rental context but also as an investment). A colormunki will do as well, but is somewhat crippled and /significantly/ slower to use.

Would you try to measure a distance without a ruler/measuring tape or try to weigh something without scales? It's no different with colour - if you want to know how far apart some colours are then you obviously require a hardware device of some description to perform said measurement.

so real question that i've always wondered. i decided to use the ICC profile on the page you linked. when calibrating, should i keep all of my monitor settings at default and just use the sofware to calibrate, or would i also need to adjust the settings on the monitor as well? i feel like making adjustments on both would just cause colors to turn out weird and for everything to not work out.
@MatthewSuffidy
@MatthewSuffidy 7 жыл бұрын
With LCD sort of monitors I find that to start usually the brightness is important to go as a high a possible, although some have gone like weird with too much brightness. Then the contrast generally screws things up, because I think it starts to limit grey levels as it is increased. So you can try to see if it is ok. Then I figure out which of the 3 additive primaries is strongest and set that to max value. Then I adjust the other 2, until white areas appear white. Then I maybe alter the gamma if mid tones seem to light. I almost never saw a monitor that looked good as it was shipped.

I didn't realise until seeing this video that you can get different colour profiles for similar monitors on the same PC. I was using different models with different resolutions supported, so I didn't bother that much to make them look the same and instead focused on what they were meant for: one for gaming, one for video/photo viewing. I imagine running into that issue would be quite frustrating for most people.

Is there any screen calibrator hardware with a whole display surface. or software with multiple testing areas? For example if i want to calibrate more than a spot in a middle. I mean if the middle is 1000% accurate but the sode is 20%-off, just an example can i calibrate somehow to be less accurate in one spot, but more accurate over all. When you buy a factory calibrated, they using the same method? Because i tested an expensive samsung 1080p 100% srgb factory calibrated with an expensive tester from a work place and it was 2% off and i was thinking if the factory calibratin gives an over all calibration to the best average accuracy, isthere a sutch thing, or i am over complicating things? But i think it should be :D

At least on the Xbox360 it's not the console that's broken. It's the cable. I was surprised when I replaced that proprietary plug with a VGA-RCA combo jack how different everything looked. I remember when I first turned on my computer, it looked like everything used water paints for the colors on videos

Just did this on my Asus MG279Q, color and brightness were very good out of the box(blue light filter is an eye saver for late night viewing). I never bothered to calibrate the color, after doing this I have to say that my monitor looks even better now. The changes aren't night and day, but they're definitely noticeable. Now Linus doesn't look like he got a spray tan =P

Recently bought a rather old Spyder 3 for $50 on eBay as I wasn't satisfied with the colors of my DP2710 when OC'd to 100hz. Colors looked kind of dull in comparison to other monitors. Took a while to get a decent calibration (Spyder3 is OLD), but holy shit did that help. Colors feel deeper, a green tint I didn't know existed got corrected and colors actually feel natural now. Can definitely recommend, especially for older/non-super-expensive monitors/TVs and when watching movies.

I'm wondering if the 'Cheap korean curved ultrawide" monitor you reviewed (watch?v=0vvdvjralvs) could benefit from this as one of the major downside you had with it was the poor color it was displaying ?

Good thing that many monitor come factory calibrated. The one I have is supposed to be calibrated individually and I can't complain so far.

So when you calibrate are you supposed to use the software form your computer or those buttons on your monitor? I personally can’t even change the brightness from my computer, I have to use the monitors buttons. I have a laptop that I connect vie DisplayPort to an Acer Predator XB321HK if that matters. (Having trouble finding colour profiles for it as well)

Alexander Romanov Did you figure out if you use software, or calibrate the monitor from buttons on the back. I bought a Asus VP28uhq monitor specifically for console gaming. Do you know if you can calibrate the monitor without it being connected to a computer?
