i remember this grass everywhere when i lived in Florida, they planted it along the highways because its so drought tolerant. We used to take the seed heads in elementary school and other class mates that it tasted sweet, but when they would bite on it we would pull the grass through their mouth and they'd get all the seeds in their teeth lol

I have had both and would never go back to St. Augustine, chinch bugs, watering, constant pesticides, must cut 2x's more then Bahia. Bahia is a native grass meaning it survived because it adapted. Can come back after a severe drought and mostly pest resistant. Yes not a pretty but reliable and looks good when watered and fertilized.

Ok so I commented on one of your videos. I can't remember which one. I had just planted some in my "by the beach" sandy Florida lawn. Said I would come back to update. Well.....I am SHOCKED to note that some little spots did in fact grow. I didn't water to much....but I did put an inflatable pool up because I figured it wasn't going to come in. Well I just had my husband dump it after 2 weeks of it sitting there. (We had it covered and stuff so we were able to keep it up that long) amazingly the ENTIRE spot that the pool was at is FILLED with new grass! Not the rest of the yard...but under there. I guess it helped hold the moisture on the ground. I wish I could post a picture. Apparently it doesn't need sun, but staying wet.

I mowed Bahia lawns during the summers as a kid in SE Tampa. They look the best during the summer. I recall @LawnTimeComing battling his backyard and the frustration that goes with it. The lawn does look like it is improving. One thought came to mind for a long term plan......could you supplement either annual or perennial ryegrass to compete with the weeds and other grass types mixed in? You would have to plan the transition depending on location, season, etc.

Here in Florida it's found in lawns where the soil is very sandy - big time in St Pete and here in Bradenton. Almost all homes built in the 60 and 70s were sodded or seeded with bahia. Also in new connstruction, when the builders want to save money, they will sod front lawns with St Aug and back lawns with bahia. My guess is this saves money but it also could have something to do with foot traffic. Backyards are where kids play and bahia is a better play grass than St Aug.
@jimmaul
@jimmaul Жыл бұрын
@@Thelawncarenut In my community here (built in the last few years), all yards are St Aug, as well as immediately visible common areas. Parks are bermuda for better traffic tolerance, and everything else (around ponds, out of sight, etc, are bahia. Definitely a money saving measure since its only where somewhat hidden.

On the other side of the coin are folks like me who absolutely HATE Bahia grass. It is tenacious and has infested several of my customers tall fescue yards (here in NC). I didn't transfer or plant it, it was already there when I took them on as customers. I have found that it really doesn't like Quinclorac. I sprayed those yards with Q4, which has quinclorac in it and tortured the Hell out of it. This year, if it comes back I'm going to use straight quinclorac on it. My heart is full of love when I see it wilting and dying.

We always called Bahia, BA-HEY-YA , But it's Really pronounced BUH-HEE-UH , but anyway LOL, I've been having a problem growing grass over a septic drain field, it keeps dying in that area, and I went forth as to kill the weeds, stripped out the area, then added new Bahia sod. The rest of the yard is fine with a mix of St Augustine and Bahia. I think the dirt maybe contaminated because I usually find worms and other bugs in the dirt in other areas, but not around the drain field. What's your thoughts on this.

@@MichaelRei99 I guess I should have specified, we need caterpillars, and pollinating insects like bees and butterflies. Without caterpillars most birds would die as that is what they use to feed their babies. We kill grubs in our manicured lawns but grubs feed birds as well. When all we have are non flowering non native landscape plants and turf grass it doesn't support our wildlife. At least Florida is good about keeping oak trees which host over 200 moths and butterflies. But they still need nectar from native wildflowers to survive.
@delve_

I LOVE Mimosas. Where I'm from, the only native true Mimosa that we have is the little-leaf sensitive brier, which isn't as pretty (or romantically named) as sunshine mimosa, but it's still lovely. We do have some other mimosoids around here, though. I love Illinois bundleflower in particular. Small flowers, but beautiful.

Hey Allyn, big fan and great video as usual! Question for you…I live in a new neighborhood with tall fescue here in Tennessee. My lawn is looking amazing thanks to your Yard Mastery products. The builder next door laid down zoysia about a month ago. Should I be concerned that it will invade and take over my yard in the future? I don’t want all of my hard work to be for not. Keep up the great work!
@Thelawncarenut
@Thelawncarenut Жыл бұрын
yes, it will invade but you can easily keep it out with a border strip down the middle. Quickest way is to hire someone with a concrete curb machine (Lil Bubba) and have them make a curb between houses. That will keep the zoysia from creeping under. Railroad ties would work too.
@JferrellTN
@JferrellTN Жыл бұрын
@@Thelawncarenut Thank you so much for the information! I have some research to do as I don’t believe my association will allow any curbing in between the houses. Glyphosate can take out wild Bermuda. It may take several application over a few seasons but the Bahia grass can crowd it out with enough over seeding..Plus you can burn it to the ground but the wild weed seed is still there. Pre - emergent will be key...You are right killing it off won't be easy but over time it could be done.
