Alrighty guys, today we're going to take a look at Dwarf Gourami!
These are quite a straight forward fish to look after and make great pets! Featuring today is Clyde, my male neon blue Dwarf Gourami.
I hope you enjoy the video! Let me know down in the comments if you have a dwarf gourami and any tips or stories you would like to share! xx
Thank you so much to Amanya Bandy for the suggestion! xx
P.S. I don't own the photos of the dwarf gourami colour variations! The flame gourami photo was from aquariumgallery.com.au, and the powder blue was from bettamylove on tumblr! xx

Hey guys, I've got some sad news. A few days ago I had upgraded my dwarf Gourami, Clyde, and the ember tetras to a planted 20 gallon. Clyde was loving all of the extra space, but sadly this morning I found that he had jumped out of his tank and passed away. I was going to make an update care video with him but in light of that I won't be, but I do have some extra insights to share with you through keeping him. Dwarf Gouramis are so much fun. They are adorable and have such awesome personalities. I love how they interact with their feelers. I would also recommend giving them more than the minimum tank size (as I would with all fish) and found that a 20 gallon was really good. Also make sure you block off every tiny hole you can, as it looks like Clyde jumped out in the gap left by a hang on the back filter. If you have a glass panel lid, maybe consider adding some mesh to the gaps. I'm sorry for the sad update but I hope this video and the footage of Clyde continues to educate and inspire you all. Enjoy your dwarf Gouramis! Lots of love 💕

Cool video and fish! I just got a neon blue who looks and acts much like yours. Auburn spent the first two days racing back and forth on the back of the tank but since then has calmed down. He isn't as brave as my betta (who's in another 10 gallon) but he is as inquisitive as her and he's learning to come up when I open the lid since that may mean FOOD! He's definitely fun to watch in my heavily planted tank. Lives with 4 false julii corys and a few ghost shrimp.

@starkissedvixen 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! 😊 That sounds awesome! I'd probably get 6 ember tetras at least as they get a bit skiddish in smaller groups (they don't have a large bioload anyway so that would be fine in that tank, I've got around 7 in this 10 gallon) but as long as the dwarf gourami is of good temperament they'll be fine regardless, you just get better schooling in larger numbers. Although if they're comfortable they might not school all the time anyway haha, mine certainly don't! Have you decided on the dwarf gouramis colour yet? 😁 That's just so exciting, I hope it goes really well! 😍💕

@@starkissedvixen Thanks so much for the thoughtful reply. Yes I wasn't sure with my tank size how many I could keep in it but its good to know about them not being too messy! Also when I eventually add fish in around a months time do you think its wise to add all of them at once? or add the tetras first? vise verse with the gouramis? And as for colour, When I was young and got one of my first proper tanks I remember I had a metallic blue one who I named Bluey! So I'd love to get one with a similar colouring to yours, with some cool stripes :)
@starkissedvixen
@starkissedvixen 4 жыл бұрын
Not a problem! 😊 I would add the tetras in first so that if your dwarf gourami is more on the aggressive side it won't be territorial towards them (whereas if the tetras are added last, the gourami will think they're invading his territory!) That's what I did anyway haha. Omg that's so awesome! The metallic blue colours they have are so gorgeous! 😍 I was tossing up between getting an all blue one or this guy with the stripes, and I'm so glad I went with the stripes, makes him stand out a bit more and really be the showcase fish of the tank 😄💕

@@starkissedvixen Thanks for the advice...though the more I look at my tank the more I feel as though this wouldn't be enough space for the little guy :( I think I'll be more responsible and just have a school of 6-8 ember tetras. @starkissedvixen
@starkissedvixen 3 жыл бұрын
Aww thank you so much! All fish seem to benefit from live plants so I would recommend them. I prefer a more sandy or finer gravel substrate, but as long as it's not a size that could get stuck in their mouth it should be okay as they do tend to scavenge the ground a little, so you could either go fine or thicker. I hope that helps! 😊💕

Might be a little on the small side but it should still work. I'd probably choose neons over Cardinals in a tank that size. But be aware that bristlenoses can get very big and can attack other fish if they don't get the food they need. I'd probably give it a miss and stick with corydora or otocinclus if you want catfish, but that being said I have one in a 60 L and he's pretty magnificent. I hope this helps! 😊💕

I have a male Dwarf Gourami in my 65g community. I recently treated for ich on Clown Loaches and Black Neon Tetras, using g high heat and garlic. Towards the end of treatment, the Gourami had a sudden loss of appetite at feeding time. He never exhibited any sign of ich. He hunts and forages normally, and is always pooping big long strings longer than he is. This morning, he showed a somewhat increased interest in frozen Bloodworms, but went wild over live Daphnia. He'll even turn his nose up at live Blackworms. Just did 25% water change. Day IV out of treatment Temp down from 88°F during treatment to 82.6 post treatment. Lowered temp 2° a day. Any idea what's going on with my Gourami? My female in another tank is as fit as a fiddle.
@starkissedvixen
@starkissedvixen 4 жыл бұрын
Hmm that's so strange... I've noticed that sometimes fish just randomly change appetites, as to what food they enjoy and what they don't, so it could be as simple as that. If the poo is white or clear I'd suggest he has parasites, but if not it's either normal or he's a little constipated. I would monitor him for now, as well as the other inhabitants. As long as he's eating something, even if he's being picky about it, I wouldn't worry too much at this stage. I once had a wild female Betta that refused to eat anything but live blackworms. With the circumstances of the tank it's a little suspicious, but nothing is sticking out to me right now so I'd just continue to offer him frozen bloodworms and live daphnia. I hope that helps! Good luck! 💕

In terms of space, would a pair fit in a 16 gallon aquarium?
@starkissedvixen
@starkissedvixen 4 жыл бұрын
I've never tried, but I'd say 16 gallons would be fine for a pair, depending on the males temperament. If you find you have a more aggressive male than usual you might need a bigger tank to allow the female to get a break, but in the typical case, 16 gallons should be good. Hope it goes well! 💕

@starkissedvixen
@starkissedvixen 3 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure about the getting air part but not eating is a big sign in any fish species that something is wrong. I would probably check your water params and keep an eye out for any signs of disease before considering it being loneliness as it's likely that something has spread from one gourami to the other and you want to avoid exposing another fish to the same. I hope this helps! Good luck! 😊💕

My boy makes it constantly when he’s hungry once I feed him he stops n goes nuts for 5 mins then sleeps… they’re really good to get to know personality wise people may have timid ones but yo mine legit chases me around the tank then again he lives 20 cm from my bed. But,,, it’s very easy to piss these fish off so if u having timid Issues maybe they need some time acclimating to humans if that’s what u want, rams are the same they swim hoops through your hands.. but DG’s seem to always end as the owners fave fish due to how weird they are… wonder how close their related to archer fish? Same shape same behaviour I have owned archers and their identical behaviour wise but a Lil more wild..

@starkissedvixen

Bristlenose plecos get fairly big, eat a lot, produce a lot of waste, and can be territorial, so I'm inclined to say stick to one in a 30 gallon. What a great aquarium! My gourami would eat any cherry shrimp it could find but it varies between each fish, so it depends on if you're willing to risk it or not. Also I've never tried it but the bright colours of the guppies may cause the gourami to be aggressive to them but again this will vary per fish. It might be worth trying it but being willing to return the gourami if it doesn't work out. I hope this helps! 😊💕

Sorry for the late reply! Your comment was automatically flagged as spam for some strange reason 😅 Thank you so much! It's probably a little crowded for even just a pair (depending on the personality of the gouramis) as most people recommend upwards of 15 gallon for a pair. If you're set on the 10 gallon I'd probably go with one gourami and the neons, but if you can afford a little bigger I'd grab a 20 gallon for that whole stocking list just to be sure. @starkissedvixen
@starkissedvixen 3 жыл бұрын
You can keep multiple dwarf Gouramis together but they can show aggression, particularly the males. A single or a pair of Gouramis is a safe bet, but otherwise keep more females than males and make sure there's plenty of hiding spots! Don't overstock either, they can be pretty territorial. Hope that helps! Good luck! 😊💕

how come my Dwarf Gourami fight other fish and eat all the food? Is there a way to feed them something that they can eat slowly and leave food for my other fish? Also, why are they attacking my angel fish?
@starkissedvixen
@starkissedvixen 3 жыл бұрын
Dwarf Gourami are territorial fish and can be aggressive. It probably sees your angel fish as an intruder or competitor. I'm not sure if there is a food they can eat slowly but I would try feeding at two opposite sides of the tank so that the gourami can't possibly eat all of it at the same time. You can try adding lots of hiding places and plants to break up their line of sight to reduce the aggression, but it's probably worth considering separating the angel fish and Gourami if they're getting attacked. I hope that helps! Good luck! 😊💕

Thank you lovely. Mine would eat cherry shrimp so I'd say there's a good chance they'll go after the fry but I haven't kept platy before. Gouramis can be rather aggressive so if you had the means to do so I would move the dwarf gourami to a different tank, but if that's not within your means and you can't give either of the Gouramis a new home then I would add heaps of plants and make sure there's plenty of hiding spaces for the dwarf gourami, but they'll still be stressed and will still get chased, really sorry, it's not a good situation 😣 I hope it all works out though! 💕

I'm sorry to hear that. I mainly don't recommend it because dwarf Gouramis can be territorial and require a decent amount of space to themselves. Nice tank! I have a question for you though, my dwarf gourami eats all the food in my community tank. I am scared because when I try to make sure my other fish are eating he eats all of it before the other fish get any. As soon as I approach the tank he swims to the top and waits for me to drop any food. He even will chase the bristlenose pleco away from algae wafers and eat that. He’s gotten a huge belly from this and looks like he’s ready to explode. Should I put him in his own tank or something?

His belly is like twice the size of yours. It does not look healthy.
@starkissedvixen
@starkissedvixen 3 жыл бұрын
Aww thank you so much! Sounds like he's bloated, I would probably try fasting him for a couple of days to see if it helps with his digestion. I get around that feeding problem with mine by feeding a mixture of sinking and floating pellets, my dwarf gourami gets all of the floating ones but isn't quick enough for the sinking ones which the other fish eat. You could also try feeding at two different ends of the tank simultaneously so he can only get a portion of the food, but he does sound a bit aggressive if he's chasing the bristlenose away so that's up to you on whether you think he'll do better separated. Also you want to see if you can find a way to stop the gourami from eating the algae wafers, I had a Betta that used to pick at them and they would get bloated every time they ate a bit. Maybe try hiding it? The Pleco will be able to find it but the gourami might not. I hope that helps! Good luck! 😊💕

I also have 2 Kois in there which Ill be rehoming in a few months. I will have 4 Tiger Barbs, 2 Common Plecos, 1 Brown Roofed Turtle and 1 Black Ghost Knifefish in there with the Gouramis. Its a growout tank for the plecos and the knife. Once the Kois are gone too in the coming months then ill add the invertibrate army in there. Ramshorns, apples, bladders, malaysian trumpet snails and ghost shrimp. They'll be tankmates, cleanup crew and potential protein source for the Knifefish.

Sounds like a plan! I've heard of tiger barbs being too aggressive with dwarf gourami to the point of killing them so just be sure to research the compatibility of all of the fish before adding them to the tank. I haven't kept most of those creatures before so I can't comment from personal experience though. Anyway that sounds very exciting! Good luck! 😊💕
@ayunkhan2395
@ayunkhan2395 4 жыл бұрын
@@starkissedvixen yea, the Barbs are nippy. But the cichlids are much more deadly than the barbs. The 66 gallon has enough open space and hiding spots for the gouramis to feel safe. The barbs will only harass other fish if the barbs themselves are in smaller numbers. If they have more friends, they'll just chase the other barbs and not other fish. So im planning to getting atleast 2 other tigers as well. Dont want to overcrowd it. The rest will be fine though. The turtle just keeps to himself and is only interested in live plants. The knifefish hides all day. The plecos are just.... plecos. Thanks for the heads up though on the barbs. On a side note, I wanted to ask if these gouramis are okay with heavy filtration? Since they're all air breathers and all. The 66 gallon has a powerhead and provides pretty heavy flow.
@starkissedvixen
@starkissedvixen 4 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you've looked into it and know your fish so well! Sounds like such an interesting tank! Hmm I haven't thought about filtration before but they prefer low flow, if you've got areas of the tank with low flow and only minor surface agitation in places then they should be okay

@@starkissedvixen thank you for getting back to me yet again. I appreciate all the feedback I can get on this step Ill see to it if there are areas with low flow. Even though my tank is only 60 l ( 60×30×30 ) I think there is still room for more fish and I wanted to ask you: Could I add more fish? If yes, what would you suggest: a male betta or gourami fish ( 1 or 2 ). I like both species the same. Thanks in advance!
@starkissedvixen
@starkissedvixen 4 жыл бұрын
You probably could, most of those are pretty small, I would advise to get a dwarf gourami as Bettas sometimes get stressed with neons in my experience. Most other gouramis could be too big. You can use www.aqadvisor.com/ to check your stocking capacity. Also grab a test kit if you don't already have one, as it's a new tank I would test the parameters at least once a week to make sure it has physically cycled and that your fish are safe. Testing would also be a good indication as to whether your tank will be okay for another fish, if water changes don't seem to be removing ammonia and nitrite, and nitrate isn't at an acceptable level, wait a while longer and don't add another fish, either your tank hasn't fully cycled or its struggling to keep up with the current fish. I hope that helps! Good luck! 😊💕
