Pearls are a beautiful (but delicate) addition to any jewelry collection. And like most jewelry you have to be very careful about how to preserve its appearance. In this video I not only share some interesting facts about pearls, but also some tips on how to take care of and clean them.

Excellent tips, Jill! Particularly having your good pearls looked after by a trustworthy jeweler as occasionally they need to be restrung. With any heirloom pieces it’s always better to be safe than sorry. Thank you.

I was going to ask you about pearl care then I found this video! I have some beautiful pearl studs that I wear all the time and a pearl necklace that I haven't worn in years because the string broke and I haven't made it a priority to get them restrung. I had no idea I should have them restrung every 1-3 years! Lots of great information here, as usual. Thanks!

I wear pearl neckpiece daily at home coz i love to wear them. I have two south sea pearl neckpiece, one white 12 mm and another 14-16 mm golden ( multi colour) , and also 2 fresh water Pearl neckpiece, and breclet, finger ring, ear rings. I bought them from Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh, the world longest sea beach has situated here. I'm also from Bangladesh. Thanks for your Video. ❤❤❤

Thank you this was very comprehensive I would wear pearls every day I don’t see them very often people aren’t wearing them very much anymore but the price point on the vintage market and even brand new is so good anyone can wear pearls

so, talking about safes. my mum has a 4x fwp graduated necklace with an 18ct yg clasp with diamond plus many other pieces ( how many other daughters get to arrange on the velvet ring display boxes her mums pieces like an 18ct rainbow of rocks from different rock classes. so much fun from ruby to triple tanzanite .. a bit tricky to get the close colours right though. ) if you keep everything together in the same secure space (including our broome stuff) is the water glass necessary or should they be kept separate.

You are very fortunate Jennifer! In a jewelry store, they would generally be kept separate. Most metals and stones would not be harmed by the water. However some items may be like antique micro mosaics and maybe even mourning jewelry made from hair or jet.

I have my grandmother's graduated cultured pearl 16" necklace. A couple of the pearls have broken in half and dropped off the strand. The rest look far too delicate to subject to wear. Is there some special way I should store them so the rest of the necklace doesn't deteriorate? They are currently in a soft drawstring bag in a jewelry drawer. I don't plan to wear it but don't want it to completely crumble to dust.

They should be restrung, and they need some moisture. They actually do better being worn because they get the oils from your skin which helps keep them from drying out. They should also be stored out of the sun in an area with moisture. Start by taking them to an expert to restring them before you start wearing them. xoxo

That was awesome and so help full!! I restrung my pearls on jewlery wire with hemitite spacer beads instead of knots is this bad for the pearls i was told its stronger as my opal and gold pendant broke through the silk thread .i want to make sure im taking the best care of my pearls ive had my necklace for 14 years my grandma had it restrun 4 years ago and added the pendant . not sure if theyre ok on the 24 gauge artstic wire silver i got the thickest wire that would fit trough the beads without having to push through the pearls. Is that magic strechy string good or bad for pearls as my mating braclet i maid today of pearls and hemitite flowers broke my baby barley tugged and pearls all over my bed . worried my necklace could brake too. Whats the weight strengh of silk thread . do you know what the convertion is from gauge to mm to inches ?? Its all so confusing !!??!! Great video

Thank you Dawna. The knots between the pearls keep them from scratching against each other and also keep the pearls from going everywhere if the string is broken. My concern would be that without the knots, your hematite beads will scratch your pearls. I haven't worked with pearls personally so I'm afraid that I can't give you advice on the different gauges or the stretchy string. Without seeing the pendant, it's hard to advise. You may be able to use it as an enhancer (where you could take the pendant on and off) which would mean that the weight wouldn't always be there. I hope I was of some help. They sound lovely! xoxo

@@JillMaurer thanks you have bin helpfull . i cant fined anyone that knows the defference between the gauge and mm and in youd think in the jewelery world some one would know ive asked like 20 people even at the craft store .do you have an instagram?? Im dawnatudesupermommylushious . theirs a pic posted yesterday of my necklace imaid i was so happy before my baby well hes 2&1/2 broke my bracelet.

id be worried about the holes through the pearls with the wire tbh. plus the hematite would bump up (have a look at where its on the mohs scale) and scratch your pearls with use. silk thread is incredibly strong and supple and doesnt hurt the surface like a metal would. since you like hematite.. ever thought of a grey or black pearl (like a tahitian) to correspond with the lighter ones? might make the technical bits of putting a piece together less tricky. i know your post is 12 months old plus .. pearls tend to sized in mm.

Thank you for the information. Why are some pearls more expensive than others? I understand acoya strands are more etc. But I've noticed the same cultured strands same size even can vary in price depending where you go. I would love to understand this more so I can get the best deal for my dollar.

Some pearls are more expensive to produce than others. Some river mollusks produce 10-12 pearls at a time fairly quickly with very little nacre. Others produce one pearl at a time, require clean natural ocean waters, and take years to produce a large pearl. This may make a good video! xoxo

Personally i love pearls i have 3 necklaces and a bracket 1 is a 50s style from my nan i keep them in this bric a brac box i have brought it doesn't have any magnetic forces holding it shut its made of glass (has a glass coating) and out of the sun ony bedside table

Joia de Majorca pearls are man made pearls, and I'm not sure you can stop the peeling. It's possible the company will replace them.

I think autocorrect may altered your question so I'm not sure if I understand, but if you are asking about changing the size of the ring, the best thing to do is take it to a goldsmith or the jewelry store where you purchased it.

I have some pearls left to me by my grandmother. I would really like to wear them but I use high spf sunscreen on my face and neck area and often reapply at some point during the day. I do this throughout the year(I'm very fair skinned). I feel that the sunscreen would probably damage them.

Sunscreen is not good for pearls. The best solution I can think of is to wear them over a collared shirt or turtle neck. xoxo

Natural body oil does help condition pearls. Pearls dry out much faster if not worn. xoxo

I would not wear pearls in the shower. Some pearl earrings are glued in which could be a problem. Plus the shampoo and soap would be bad for them. xoxo

I just got a natural sea salt black pearl necklace it has 61 pearls on it it’s used I bought it at a event so I was wondering how to clean and maybe even polish them the are smaller than freshwater pearls that’s for sure
