I just love isopodes I've had my colony for eight years they always just keep recycling themselves. Mine eat there own dead there old shedding I also give them tiny bits of boloney or sausege but mostly I give them carrots and broccoli. Also I put a small piece of cuddle bone for a can

The scientific name of their family is called Armadillidae. They are omnivores but their protein requirement is primarily accomplished through predation on fungi. They don't seem to be picky about the type of fungi though. Yeast, mold, and higher fungus are all consumed. They can and do eat plant matter, but prefer dead plant material as it lacks simple sugars, which might be harmful. I believe simple sugars cause issues with their gut flora, which is similar to a termites, but I've never conducted more rigorous trials than simply observing what they prefer to eat and cross referencing that with preferences of different arthropods. If they have fermentative gut, too much simple sugar can be rather dangerous. Again, this is similar to termites, but they lack the jaw strength necessary to be destructive. They actually seem to prefer areas that have large temperature swings. So very hot and dry during the day, and then cold and humid at night. If you keep them in a more temperate environment, you only need a spray bottle or so to keep the moisture content high. They are actually attracted to darkness and dark colored things. You can demonstrate this by drawing a black circle on a white sheet of paper and putting 1 pill bug in the center and shining a light on it. they'll follow the circle for quite a while before tiring out. As far as using them for nutrition of reptiles, I would think they're superior to most other invertebrate feeds. Lack of calcium is something that's repeatedly come up in my readings of reptile feeds and these have quite a bit of calcium in them. I don't currently keep reptiles, but I have kept chickens, who voraciously gobble these things up.

People don't use these as reptile feed, though they will munch on them. They're used to prevent mold build up and to eat excrement.

@@mpk6664 I beg to differ. I've often seen them used as a secondary food source, often along side springtails, for smaller amphibians and some reptiles (especially the dwarf Whites).

I would think they are not the only thing to eat snake or lizard poop, maybe mealworm or superworm larvae, if they can escape being eaten.
@nakedreptiles

Hey thanks for the comment! Yes, they are not the only organisms you can use but I have a healthy colony and that’s what I use. I have been wanting to try mealworms but am not sure how I feel about having the darkling beetles running around in the cage and on my snake lol. Thanks for watching :)

is it possible for there to be too many isopods in a terrarium? I'm planning on making my snail terrarium bioactive

you shouldn't worry about it since its not an issue unless you have the entire boittom covered with them.

I have a question I'm breeding 10 different species of roaches could i use these to eat the roach waste...
@nakedreptiles
@nakedreptiles 6 жыл бұрын
Hi! Yes! You can! In fact I’ve seen lots of people that breed roaches use various kinds of isopods in their setups to help with the waste. I don’t use them that way because I am completely freaked out by roaches lol but yes, they are entirely safe and good to use. Plus, if one or two make it into the feeding dish during feeding time no harm done. Thanks for watching!

Just make sure you get a species of isopod that does well in drier environments. Some species are tropical and wouldn't do well in a dubia colony.

NakedReptiles & Aquatics hey, do you know anything that get rid of pill pug waste, I don’t wanna change the dirt every once in awhile, since mine has worms which will get away and I don’t want that, I also heard pill bug waste is dangerous for them when stacking up

Your cornsnake came out to see you! They are getting more like cats all the time! Hey, I am trying cheap fish pellets for mine too. What are the mini catappa leaves used for? I never heard of that before... I bet you were monetized before. Did KZfaq just demonetize you for not having enough views?
@nakedreptiles
@nakedreptiles 6 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for the kind comment! Right? He is so cute! I use the mini catappa leaves just as a “safe” leaf litter for them. You can use other “typically safe” leaves but I am in the deserts of southern california where there are not many lol. Just be sure to do some research on proper collection. And yes, with the update I am no longer a monetized channel with only having about 500 subscribers out of the required 1000. Thank you for watching and again, leaving a decent comment!

I want to get Isopods for my bio active ball python enclosure. Which Isopod species should I get for handling my ball python's waist? He's in a 30 gallon tank with coconut fiber and catappa leaf bedding that I mist every other day to keep up the humidity.

Can you feed these to a praying mantis ?
@joshwilson5375
@joshwilson5375 5 жыл бұрын
Depends on the size of the mantis. Easiest way to check the size of your mantis food is to usually keep the food as being just a little bigger than their head and smaller. Fruit flies are best for young mantises however.

do i have to be afraid of over population
@nakedreptiles
@nakedreptiles 6 жыл бұрын
Joshua Lee Are you talking about in the cage ie. it looking like a isopod enclosure vs a snake/lizard/frog/etc. cage or are you talking about having an over population in the container colony? I have never had a problem with either of those issues. If you are getting a TON of isopods in your vivarium that may be a sign you need to do maintenance on the vivarium and clean it more often. And if you’re talking about having a crash from over population in the container then no, they will only populate based on how much food they are provided. There may be a crash at some point, yes, but those dead isopods will become food for the surviving ones. Same thing as Malaysian trumpet or other “peat” snails found in aquariums. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment and I hope I could help!

@nakedreptiles
@nakedreptiles 6 жыл бұрын
Joshua Lee oh awesome! Yeah they will breed based on how much “food” there is in the terrarium. There may be a lot at first but then they will have a crash and reach an equilibrium after that crash. You shouldnt have an issue longterm! Thanks again for watching!

Can you just release some of them if it ever does get to that point??? (If they are native to your area)
@nakedreptiles
@nakedreptiles 5 жыл бұрын
I would be 150% sure that they are a native species. In general though, I would not recommend releasing any captive organism, ever, as who knows what it could cause.
