I just bought one of these recently, and I'm delighted she brought me to your channel. You have such a lovely way of speaking. Plant was sold as Njoy at Bunnings but I much prefer the name Snow Queen. Just watering her and seeing her roots popping out of her pot base after only a fortnight chilling under my lamp.

Hey James! Really love your videos and always looking forward to new ones from you. I have a problem with my snake plant that I would like to seek advice from you. There are brown, dried out patches on some leaves of my snake plant that I am really not sure what maybe the causes. I put my snake plant on the balcony that has some afternoon sun during some time of the year. Watering, I water it when the soil is dry. Hope you can advice. Thanks so much.
@simpleplanty
@simpleplanty 2 жыл бұрын
Hi! Thanks for reaching out and appreciate the feedback! Brown patches can be caused by a number of different reasons and it really depends - some possible causes include fungal infection, underwatering or possibly too much direct afternoon sunlight. I generally don't expose any of my plants to direct afternoon sun as it's known to be a lot more harsh which could attribute to the browning. Try a shadier spot if possible - snake plants are know to be pretty vigilant through many lighting conditions though! Perhaps as a first step, try exposing it to no afternoon sun if it's convenient and see how that goes first, then monitor the other ones I've mentioned. Hope that helps 😊🌱

.. Maybe they have a little to much water?? 🙄 My Sanseviera, all of them, and my "arms and legs" (pencil cactus - though not a cactus at all but a succulent) are sitting in Eastern window and growing like crazy.. I water them when I remember, maybe once a month or every two month 😳☺️ I take them outside on my front porch, east side, the 1st of May and take them back inside in October before the first frost.. During that time I water more often, after sundown, about every other week, depending on how warm and how dry the weather is.. I clean them up before going outside and when coming back in, a wee tricky though, with a microfiber cloth and a spray bottle with seaweed solution.. Nothing more.. I hope your Sanseviera will get better soon 🌞🤗

@@missa6782 Thanks for this - it really made my day :) no worries, it's Spring, so I'm sure after a couple more weeks you will have another soon! Haha - you actually don't need to be putting those aerial roots in water!!! But I'm sure your monstera is loving the new place you put it in. For soil mix, I use a premium potting mix (I mix cactus and orchid mix together at 30% & 30% - or substitute with 60% premium potting mix) and add in perlite for the remaining (so you can add spaces and aeration for the roots). I also add charcoal, but up to you :) Make sure you're using a mask when working with perlite, you should be careful not to inhale, so be safe! What stores do you normally shop for materials?

Could I wrap a cutting in the pot and top with soil. Will this work to promote a fuller growing pot?
@simpleplanty
@simpleplanty 9 ай бұрын
Definitely can propagate cuttings and then replant them into the same pot! An old trick that I do with a lot of my plants - just note that fresh cuttings may need some time to root before they actually take off, I’ve tend to not have much luck just planting newly / immediate cuttings and tend to let them root first before I replant them. Otherwise you can use a few bobby pins to affix the vining stems into the base of the soil to promote more growth - another hack! Hope that helps ☺️🍀

I didn't wet the leaves, as well as watering it only when the soil is dry, I also plant in cactus soil which have good aeration, however I notice not long after I watered the brown spots start to appear.. Help! 😔
@simpleplanty
@simpleplanty 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Elaine! Thanks for your feedback and comment on the video - much appreciated! There can be multiple factors which cause brown spots on the snow queen - from not enough light, too much light, or too much fertiliser, so it all really depends. Do you know what lighting conditions you are keeping it in? If it has adequate light, no need to worry because, if your plant is growing in optimal environment conditions and there is new growth that you're noticing, a reminder that not all leaves will last forever, as old leaves will eventually yellow/brown due to natural turnover.
@laineyyz
@laineyyz 2 жыл бұрын
@@simpleplanty I keep it about a 6 feet away from a north west facing window, because I live in Malaysia, and the weather here is hot all year round and the evening sun is really strong. However it does have new growth quite often actually, like every 2 to 3 weeks there will be new leafs growing from 2 different trailing vines.
@simpleplanty
@simpleplanty 2 жыл бұрын
@@laineyyz direct afternoon sun is generally harsher which could be attributed to the browning - if you had a sheer curtain, that would definitely help the situation or if you had alternative convenient places where you could expose it to less direct afternoon sun would be ideal. Although, if it's growing quite well, might be a little shocked now if you want to move it. Hopefully that helped!

What about bottom watering it? I have one that was root bound and it is bushy and gorgeous, and I put it in a self watering pot.
@simpleplanty
@simpleplanty Жыл бұрын
In my opinion, bottom or top watering is entirely by preference - I personally don't have the patience for bottom watering 😂 but if you do, no worries and go ahead! Again, just an opinion but if you're quite root bound you generally want to be a little more careful anyway since the roots tend to trap the drainage below anyway and you don't want the roots to be overly wet / "ie wet feet" as it can cause rot. But if you've got an adequate draining substrate, no worries there!
