I love that you don't overfeed them or feed them things they would not eat in the wild. There are vids on YT of people feeding them stuff like ice cream, candy, refined bread and rice cakes, and commercially made cheese (which has salt added of course) which surely cannot be good for them. Wow, they are the coolest! I live in Delaware, so the closest thing I ever see to prairie dogs are squirrels & groundhogs. Northern Delaware isn't exactly known as a diverse wildlife Mecca! I love that you're doing your best to educate the public about these sweet, amazing creatures! There is not nearly enough information on the internet about proper nutrition, proper housing, health problems, Etc on prairie dogs. So any attempt to educate the public about captive prairie dogs, I applaud! I would just make a couple of suggestions.. I own 4 prairie dogs and have for 7 years. Please, please, please do not let them climb! They have zero depth perception and so 1 foot drop and 10 foot drop look exactly the same to them. Oftentimes a fall can lead to a broken tooth which can lead to a horrible, horrible thing called odontoma which ultimately can be a death sentence for a prairie dog unless you pay for an expensive surgery. Unfortunately I am having the surgery done on my sweet Veronica on February 28th. It's costing me over $600 to get my 3-year olds top incisors surgically removed because she face-planted at the pet store before I bought her and broke both of her teeth. It takes at least 2 years for the odontoma to show on xrays or symptoms to show. Also, I don't mean to nitpick but.. You're absolutely right, Timothy Hay should be their number one for staple. There are other types of hay that they can eat like Orchard Grass or oat hay but you're right, alfalfa hay is no good for them. They are selective eaters which means that they're picky as hell! So they will go through a box of hay and pick out two strands, eat those and then ignore the rest! General rule of thumb is to give a prairie dog four to five times its size of hay each day! I throw away a minimum of 4 to 5 lawn trash bags full of hay every week. And I give them 50 pounds of hay every 3 to 4 weeks! So basically, you're going to throw away a boat load of hay! The hay should make up 97% of their diet. But again, I applaud you for educating the public! Thank you so much!

One of the best information sessions on the subject. i enjoyed it totally. Its a shame but they are the kinda animal I needed years and years ago before high school even. My research deeper on small stuff like Sugar Gliders and a few others came around to them being problem animals. The stuff on Prairie Dogs actually shows them not hardly biters or problem pets. i love animals, i've had 2 dogs and a few birds but i saw big ounce from the urban rescue ranch and i just immediately fell in love with their species, after some research i found out that they're legal to have as a pet so when i do get my own place i would love 2 praire dogs of my own.

:20 trim them when he is sleeping or sleepy, he will tolerate it easier. I found when I trimmed my cats nails like this, he would tolerate the first paw, then wake up enough to care, so I would wait 30 minutes till he fell asleep again and trim the other paw, etc...

My sister used to have a prairie dog as a pet and he was so cute, he loved to cuddle, and sleep. he also LOVED to chew on our wooden door 😑😂

Diet: PD's diet should consist of 98% Timothy Hay, small portions of timothy cubes or pellets and a small number of treats to be rationed and rotated daily. (mealworms, carrot, sweet potato, zuccini and romaine lettuce) NEVER GIVE THEM ALFALFA HAY! Minimum Cage size: They need a cage at least 2'x2'x4'. Bar spacing should be no more than 1/2" wide. A large safe wheel in the cage is a good idea and a nice comfy nest area for them to sleep. Also dont use wood shavings because certain types are bad for them and can get them sick. I ususally use the recycled cardboard shavings. I have a litter box in there as well with little clay litter box training pellets in it to help with the litter box training. You can get those at your local petsmart or petco. They will also need a water bottle, toys to chew on such as bird toys or other rodent toys. a ferret harness if you want to slowly start training them and getting them use to it. Honestly the most important thing is to spend a lot of time bonding with them when you first get them so they can become accustomed to you. Also make sure you "prairie dog proof" your house. they love to chew on cables such as phone chargers or anything else they can get into. or they like to go into tight places like under the couch. The two struggles we've had is that she 1) wants to be with us all the time so she bites her bars daily when we're around/not around. Not constantly but enough for us to be concerned about her teeth. She has the same cage but with verticals bars. So she has enough space, but just would prefer to be out. SO, what toys do you find your PD's are interested in to keep them busy in their cage? We're gonna get her a friend next pup season 😊 2) are they litter trained? We haven't had too much luck with that. She pees and poops seemingly in several areas in her cage and poops occasionally when playing out with us.

I give them unlimited amount of Timothy hay. Also I give them about a handful of Timothy hay pellets a day. (Usually they don't even eat all of that) also I just sprinkle less than a handful of regular uncooked oatmeal oats on top of there food as well.

Where did you find the metal tray for the bottom of the cage? I have the same cage and mine destroyed the plastic tray that came with the cage ^_^

What about baby shampoo? Wild animal handling gloves would help you trim their nails. I got some welding gloves for my cat to trim his nails because he's an asshole and sinks his teeth and claws in me. Very nice video. Cute animals. I just at bought my second prairie dog she is 8 weeks old she came with Timothy hay sweet potatoe wedge pellets and formula. How many times a day do I give formula and how much ch she came with a 10 cc syringe and looks like powder milk

Where do you find the metal pan? I have pet rats so I have the double critter nation cage just like that. I might find a different cage for the rats or just wait until they pass away but I need a prairie dog wow!! I have three rats and two cats in a one room apartment so it might be too crowded for a prarie dog? But they woul never get lonely lol... Anyway, my rats chew through the plastic liners so I've been wondering what replacement to get. They also just get fleece blankies so less mess from bedding but they don't like to use their litter box lol. I litter box trained rodent would be nice.
