These Salvia plants are best divided from the base early in the spring. Dig the plant out wash the soil from the roots and divide them at the base and try to get a bit of root on each piece. Replant the bits back into the ground in the garden and water them in. They will root in and grow, once they reach about 3 inches in diameter you can transplant them to other locations if you like. Once established they need little water and like full sun and are easy to grow.

Cut back in late Autumn / early spring - once you know there's no chance of a late frost, feed at the same time & only then, they thrive on neglect really, also mix potting grit in cause they like loose airy soil 👍

I just add compost to the surface around the plant. If it is really looking sad I give it a shot of miricle grow. They are not big feeders.

This was helpful, I did not know that I needed to clip old blooms. Any suggestions about why the plant seems to be spreading wide, rather than up? It almost looks like a large weed now?
@growercoach
@growercoach Жыл бұрын
Some times the plant grows fast then flops. In this case when you see new shoots coming up in the middle cut off the stems that have spread out and the plant will focus its growth in the center.

How long does it take salvia to grow full size. I bought a one gallon plant from lowes and was curious how long it takes to get full size?
@growercoach
@growercoach 5 жыл бұрын
It will take approximately two seasons for a young Salvia to grow to full sized and after about three years you'll want to look at dividing it to rejuvenate. Thanks for the question.

Does Salvia has lifetime. After 10 years, my May night salvia is setting woody with few blooms. I follow your video to deadhead. Do I divide it or replace it ? Thank you
@growercoach
@growercoach 3 жыл бұрын
I would suggest that you dig the plant out once every 5 years and divide it. Rejuvination of these plants into small peices is very successfull and is normally done early in spring.

I've lots in pots doing great, plenty of sun, only fertise at spring time, 50/50 compost & grit is all they need, they like a loose soil & not a lot of nutrients 👍

I have 2 salvias in my front flower bed. While one seems ok, the other looks like it is beginning to die. Parts of it are yellow, brown, dry and droopy. How can I revive the plant? They are well spaced out.

@@growercoach thanks for the response. I had to get rid of the problem one since I saw it was infested with something. Now the other one that seemed ok looks so lifeless. It doesn't have any insects, but there has been no new growth or new flowers ever since I deadheaded the flowers that I bought it with. Some parts are slightly yellow or dark leaves but other parts are just surviving without any new growth. How can I get it healthy and blooming? Does it have any more chance this season?

why do I keep killing these? I am in zone 9b in Florida. I planted some last spring and one by one they all wilted and died. Now in February, I put some in a giant pot with some Angelonia and the Salvia have all but died. The last one is all wilted and flowers drooping even though I have good drainage, good soil and keep it watered. I didn't water the last few days as we have had rain. Help?

Its too warm for this Salvia to survive in Florida. These plants need a cold winter to keep them on track. They prefer to be dry most of the time. Best in Northern climates.👍
