I've got to tell you this Nick, but during this time of self-quarantine, it is such a pleasure to see you with a new video sharing your love of plants. I really anticipate that little glimpse of hope into our future and your sense of humour and compassion with anything living that is green (or has hints of purple or blue) Chloro-fills my heart with joy. You're a good man and you need to hear that. Darryl

My string of pearls is definitely one of my favorites, the sign for me is when the slightly translucent window on the pearls starts to disappear due to wrinkling I know it needs water! This has worked really well for me because I had one previously that I loved just a tad bit too much and killed due to overwatering!

I live in Toronto, Canada and I also have my SOP hanging in front of a south facing window. I check on the pearls every few days or so by lightly squeezing them and if they feel plump, leave them alone! If they feel soft, I leave for a few more days and give a thorough watering. I’ve killed a lot of string of pearls (both regular and variegated) and have learned to just not repot them and just watch how much I’m watering them 🥺😅

I have mine outside because our roof has big overhangs. The space it’s in, is a patio with shade cloth on top, like in a nursery. It’s been through frost and 110 in summer. I water it frequently in summer. I took and cut off strings that look unhealthy and threw it in a hanging planter with an old coconut liner and some old potting soil in it. The crazy thing is it’s doing better than the mother plant. The peas are huge. The mother plant is still in a plastic pot. I’m definitely going to replant it in a terra-cotta and see how it does. I’m experimenting with the peas by putting them up against the house facing south in the shade, because it’s so hot. I moved them from a table where it was getting more sun, but the little clear windows on some were turning white. I’m thinking because it’s getting hotter and was stressed out. I’m just learning by experimenting with location. Hopefully they will do good. Thank you

Thank you Nick for your wonderful advice! I purchased the variegated version about a month ago. It does not seem to be growing much. I'm so impatient! I went ahead and transferred it from a shallow 6" bowl to a 3" terra cotta pot as I was watching your video. While I was transplanting I did notice it had a lot more roots than when I just received them. Hopefully, this will help with the growing issue. Thanks again for all your help!

Thanks for the info Nick, its a plant family I love and really struggle with, my main problem seems to be mealies, as soon as I see ants, I know where to look! Also I maybe potted them into too big containers so my project for week 4 of confinement here in France is repot (downsize) those that are suffering the most. They are in a south-facing conservatory, so light is not a problem.. Thanks again!

I've had my string of pearls plant for more than a year, in a corner with an east and south facing window (mostly just gets morning light), and while I wouldn't say it's dying, the newer pearls are all very small and not fully round, it does not grow very fast, and it seems to have a re-occurring aphid problem (or something similar to aphids).

I'm in Texas too, what part do you you live in? I'm in new Braunfels, down the road from Gruene. Also, what did you use to kill the bugs? I don't keep many succulents, but I do have this plant. On my regular plants, i use a neem oil mixture when the seasons change as a preventative and I noticed one of my succulents looks kind of wilted at the edges ever since I used the neem oil.
@brizykay
@brizykay 4 жыл бұрын
@@Iris-gy2mi i live about an hour east of dallas. Ive never used neem oil, I've heard good things about it but I've never used it on my succulents. What I used with a very weak mixture of alcohol and water. One part alcohol to two parts water. And with a Q-tip I would dip it into the solution and then used it to pick the bugs off the plant. I did not wipe the whole plant with the solution. Just where i saw the bugs. It took a few days but eventually they went away! I'm a very new plant parent have already killed a few succulents!

Hi :D First time watcher & new plant lady. My first plant is some sort of string of pearl, (so it sounds like I chose a tricky first plant LOL) the pearls aren't quite round, but definitely not like the banana shape. It's had quite a bit of new growth that I did decide to cut back to allow the plant to focus energy on the top.

I really paid attention to his and his bottom pearls are tiny. Aren't those the new growth? All new growth takes time to get larger but you may not realize because it's a continual thing as your plant slowly gets longer.

Hi, I envy your String of Pearls. I bought 3 in Aug and already killed them. I bought another 1 last week. It was still short, just on top of the soil bag but the roots are already long and deep into the soil. However, the soil was heavy and very wet so I transferred it into a pot with a moist cactus and succulent mix. I didn't water it since the pearls are still plump and shiny. May I know when and how to water it? Some say to keep the soil moist and just mist it every few days until the roots are fully established, and other say to wait till the top of the soil is dry before giving it a thorough watering. Thank you in advance.

What is the diagnosis for pearls that are oblong, rather than fully developed? Mine has length and isn’t terribly stringy, but the pearls have trouble fully forming into little spheres, they stay in the immature phase for an extended period of time.

this is my third tries with a string of pearls, so far both are doing well. I just repotted it I bought them at the local store about 2 weeks ago, but it was raining all week then and the stores didn't really cover them, so I am worried that they will die too. they were soaking wet, so I transferred them both, but I haven't water them yet. I think my issue is I'm so worried that they might die so I'm so scared to water them when I feel the soil is still damp.

David Kask Quarantine the plant. You don’t want any chances of the spider mites jumping to other plants. I typically quarantine for 2 weeks to really make sure no eggs are hatching or anything, but make sure your plant is still getting everything it needs light wise

Nick, HELP! I've had my string of pearls the same amount of time as you. I also got mine in a 4" pot but now, mine is about 1/10th the length as yours and the pearls are small. When I first got them, the pearls were about 1/4 to 5/16". Now they're about 1/8 to 3/16". They are in a southwest window in dappled light to bright shade all day. When I give them more light, I tried a grow light, they bleach out and turn brown but do not grow any bigger. So, It's back to the dappled light and they green up again. What do I do to get them to grow bigger?

I have a 2.5" pot of pearls, a wee baby. There seems to be 3 growth points in the soil. I bought it and it was 3 little clusters. Now its starting to vine out, 3 inches out of the pit or so. Should I just let them grow? Or fold them into the top, to encourage more vines? I want to have the full curtain one day.
