Finally found a technician and got mine tuned. It had been years. It's great! We've already set up for a 6 month follow up for tuning. Gave me a small booklet to track the maintenance. It's made a huge difference in my practicing. Thank you so much for your videos. They are always so helpful. God bless💐🎼💐

I dust of the piano and the keys before I start. When I finish playing, I wipe the keys to remove the oil my fingers put on the keys. It doesn’t take long to do that but you will keep your piano looking new.

Hi Robert, I don't have a Steinway, but I do have a very nice upright. So-called Steinway technicians are charging upwards of $300 per hour. Not like times gone by. Even standard ptg' s are at least $150-200 per tuning

There is a shortage of piano technicians in many places. It is a profession that is literally dying off. We need more young people taking up the profession!

Also, don't let kids (or adults who should know better) touch the strings with their bare hands.

Thanks Robert and Chris! Video suggestion: How playing a second instrument can improve our piano playing. For example phrasing to the breath, thinking in/reading chord progressions, or rhythm driving the music.

Great suggestion! I searched, and while I have many videos that are similar, I have never covered this specific topic!

This is why I would go for digital pianos

My thoughts exactly. I'm glad I got a digital piano. Not as nice as a real piano, but almost maintenance-free and it's got a headphone output :)

I live in an old house with no insulation. I can control the humidity, but not temperature. How much can temperature fluctuate to be safe. (Would fluctuations of ten degrees up or down in one day be ok?

I think it depends on how much the piano is being played and where it is placed? I don't spend a lot of hours on it and every year I get my tuner, he tells me its fine! I still make him tune it. Actually I play on my digital piano also. So it all depends, no?
@LivingPianosVideos9 ай бұрын
Yes - pianos that are played a great deal need more servicing. Also, pianos in environments that have excessive humidity or dryness, as well as temperature changes, will also require tuning and regulation more often.

Robert what do you think about a humidifier. I live in australia where it gets really hot and the humidity gets high so if i get a humidifier would that solve it
@frazzledude9 ай бұрын
If the humidity gets high, then you would want a dehumidifier to lower the humidity. However, if you live where winters are cold and you run heaters to stay warm, then you would want a humidifier to raise the humidity in the winter because heating the air in your home decreases the humidity.

I always think more tuning is good until recently my technician told me it’s not good to tune too often too. He said something about not good for the string. Is this true ?
@frazzledude9 ай бұрын
The steel that piano strings are made from has a certain amount of springiness. As piano strings are tuned and played over many rears, the strings get stretched and lose their springy qualities. When that happens, the piano will lose some of its overtones and the richness of its sound. That is why pianos occasionally need to be restrung. While it is theoretically possible that tuning will increase the stretching of the strings and their loss of springiness, tuning is necessary maintenance of a piano and should be done regularly.

Oops... I do everything you have mentioned, except the tuning, which is once per year, as it is only as much as I can afford for now. One more thing I do: if anyone wants to try my piano, I request them to wash their hands and cut their nails beforehand.
