For the initial big blocky cuts, Maryanne's confidence with the axe is amazing, and when it comes to curves, she has a magnificent set of skills.

This lady has got some skills! Her wielding of the axe sent shivers up my spine when she cut so close to her hand seemingly without a care in the world. And with the knife her hands are like a concert pianist. Bravo!

This kind of skills strikes some deep layer in me; I feel some kind of child wonderment (and I am 55!) and love for my fellow human beings, who are immersed in bettering themselves through the silent practice of a craft...Indeed, at the end "there is no spoon", just pure concentration on creating balance and harmony in a shape...Thank you to both of you for creating such a library of excellence!

Amazing work and no saw stop cuts. I think it will be along time before I feel comfortable enough to work purely with an axe like that. Fantastic demonstration of woodworking skills.

Masterful technique

Amazing work

this was fabulous, very helpful. Thank you Maryanne and Zed outdoor. Maryanne looks like she could do that in her sleep. I was so impressed with the skill in her axe work. (and she still has all her fingers intact) Zed could you do a video on billet prep. I have a question about the billet. How do you determine when the wood is the right moisture content. Can you cut down a tree and start carving or is it better to wait a bit? and can you cut the logs and hold onto for a while before using? if so how do you store them?

Very cool as always, I love that you focus so much on wood carving in various ways Zed. I have a question: with all these different people and their techniques and all of that, have you got some tips to share on how they (or you for that matter) create things, like a kuksa or a spoon, out of wood, and not have it crack as it's drying? This is my biggest enemy :\ Appreciate it, all the best from Norway.

Thanks again for a really wonderful video. I am impressed by your ability to seek out crafts people who are also good at sharing. Not every good craftsman is a good teacher but you seem to find the best of both. I am curious about her axe techniques. I noticed that she uses the heal way more than the toe of the bit. Is this concious or a result of her proportions interacting with the proportions of the axe?

When can we expect to see videos from the Zed Outdoors Master Carvers Class? LOL. Amazing video Zed, when are you going to start making your own knives and tools? We'd love to see that!

If you don't mind me asking; what kind of wood is the second spoon from the left, bottom row on the rack, made of?

I’m curious about the Estwing hatchet in the beginning. Is that what she started out with prior to moving up to a nicer carving axe?

Great video. Would you consider making a video about the preceding process. You took a piece of wood and made a spoon. Why did you choose that piece of wood to make the spoon? Is it a particular type of wood? Is it green wood? What IS green wood? Is the the opposite of dried wood? What about moisture content? What would be the difference in carving characteristics between green and and dried wood? Would you not carve a particular piece of wood if it was to dry? Would you carve a branch with, say a diameter of 10 cm, directly? If not, how would you store it until carving? How long until it wouldn't be suitable for carving?

I think this is amazing. But here in the usa those are tiny hatchets. A AX is for tree felling.
