In switzerland there is a similar tradition,same roots as halloween(pun intended)XD, with turnips. on the 10 of november called räbeliechtli (turnip-lights)

That is what's called a turnip in Scotland, Ireland, Wales, North and (I think) West of England. They call it a Swede in the South east of England. If you google turnip lantern, this is what you get.

that isnt right, you do not do it from the bottom, you cut the top of and set aside, do it from there and then place in a candle and put the lid back on

Ahh the smell of charring turnip, and squashes just don't work to keep spirits away. It has to be a neap.
