Robin, You are such a good teacher! Just in that small video, I learned two more grips. I have been thinking of upgrading my carvers and I want to make my own handle. I'm thinking now because of yours I may get more use with the longer handle. Thanks so much!

I love how close you got with the camera so we can really see what it is you are doing! I have been carving a few years and now I want to try carving some spoons. Now I feel much more confident to try this new carving technique. Thank you so very much.

Great demonstration of the three techniques Robin, really liked the pivot one and learnt the benefits of having a long handle as a result ~Peace~

Watched it again, and you know what... This is really the only video out there going into that kind of detail and just what I needed. This is awesome! So happy to know that a open curve hook of yours is waiting at home when I come back from Japan! Can't wait! It's Maximilian N. Over on Facebook btw! Cheers

Great video!!! Thanks so much for taking time to make this video. I've been doing a lot of spoon carving research (a new hobby I want to try my hand at) and your name keeps coming up all over the internet as the best knife maker so I'm going to be contacting you soon about a purchase. Make us some more great videos Robin!!!

Robin, I am wanting to get into spoon carving and I really like this video. I was also wandering , do you use a left hand knife for all your spoon carving?

Good video, thanks! Informative, calm, clear. I'd like to ask a question though. I'm interested in purchasing a spoon knife, but just one. At first anyway. They're rather expensive specialized tools after all and I'm not planning to start carving spoons full-time. So if one had to choose a single spoon knife (as impossible as it may sound), what would be the best option? Obviously a "right-handed" model for a right-handed person, but what about the size? Big, average, small (as offered by SD for example)? Open curve or compound? I noticed that you recommended that people would learn to use a fairly big open curve model, but would that be the best all-around spoon knife?

Hi Robin, Great video, thanks for uploading it. I have carved a few spoons in my time and thought my technique was okay but when I decided to join the no-sandpaper brigade I quickly realised it isn't. When I carve the bowl I often get what I think is called "chattering" where the knife kinda takes lots of little steps rather than smooth peels like you achieve. Initially I assumed it was my tools (bad crafts man I know) as I used a very tight hook (the mora hook knife) but I have recently purchased one of your compound hooks and still having issues with chattering. So I was looking for a bit of advice, is there something obvious I am likely doing wrong that is causing this? Such as too much/not enough pressue, digging in too much/not enough? Or is it a case of just playing about until I get it working again? Cheers and thanks again for all your uploads, really appreciated them!

Maybe it has something to do with the grain and whether you're cutting you're cutting against or with it.
@WoodToolsSheffield

sorry for very belated reply Rowan only just seen this. By now you have probably either given up or got it sorted but chattering is most commonly caused by trying to take too deep a cut. Start by resting the bevel flat on the wood and skimming it across the surface without cutting anything. The gradually angle it up until it just skims the tiniest tops off the bumps. Lots of thi cuts work way better that digging down deep and also produce a nice shallow bowl shape. You don't want to dig down and create a bathtub shape.

I think it’s the wood I think in the video he uses pine, so to get that good technique you’ll have to use something like willow

Most hook knives have a shorter handle and I understand a longer handle allows leverage for some cuts. I have a question I hope some spoon carvers can answer... are there any disadvantages that a long handle? Thanks!

Looks (and is) so easy with such a large blank. Unfortunately the spoon blanks I buy don't allow for such liberal, carefree sweeps of the knife. How about a tutorial of the same topic with normal sized spoon blanks using standard hook knives? Now that would be helpful. Thanks
