Im a 37 yo female from Australia and have been fishing with a good old never fail spinning reel forever. My grandfather always took us out fishing and never taught us the baitcaster cast. I've been fishing about 15yrs and just recently about six months ago started trying to use a baitcaster. Watched tons of videos on KZfaq and still couldn't get it right. Watched this video once and in 10 mins making casts without a backlash one! I'm not accurate with it yet but now I can cast it without being pissed off! Thanks for the great video!

More of the same here. Started fishing with my grandaddy 45 years ago but life kept me away from it for the last 30. Picked it up again and updated my gear and my baitcaster almost had me giving it up again. Watched tons of videos but found this one last night. A few hours in the yard today and I can hit the bucket at 75 feet about half the time but with zero backlashes. This video was the best thing to happen to me in a long time.

Your tip about putting tape on the reel was a lifesaver and reduced time needed to clear back-lashing when first starting out. Your video was the only one I've seen where someone mentions that.

Great teaching technique. I've found that people who come from spinning gear to casting gear have the most trouble with change in the release point. You do a good job coaching that point.

Found my new favorite uncle! Uncle Gene!!! Been watching all of your videos and between you and a few other guys, Ive gotten back into one of my favorite childhood activities!

50yr old male just got my first baitcaster and knew how to set the brakes and the knob that lets the bait drop slow, but still got backlash. Spent 15 minutes at the pond, 14.5 minutes was spent untangling the braid (also, my flouro-lead knot is too big for the eyelets and catches...so gonna shorten that to 18 inches, down from 5ft). I have masking tape, so I'll likely walk out 30 yards and then tape off the reel--this was the first video where I saw that suggestion. Thanks. :)

GREAT video. LOVE the tape idea. I just got my FIRST bait caster yesterday, and today, I got back lash so bad that I had to re-spool my reel. Any bird would have LOVED the bird nest that reel had. Tomorrow, I'm trying the tape.

Gene i live in uk love watching your videos 2 years ago i was in Chicago watching a guy fish with a baitcaster in the uk we are brought up on spinning reels so i bought a abu garcia black max watched all your videos on baitcasters i started on mono line then after 6 months moved onto braid if it wasn't for your videos i would never be able to use a baitcaster the way i can now i never get backlashes ever must say watching you side cast and pitch looks easy it is not easy it's a skill and lots of practice thanks gene for all the videos you have done they are top quality made by a guy that is top quality just to let you know gene there are people like myself that appreciate your time and work GENE TOP GUY ALien

Last summer I used the original video and turning the brakes wasn't included and I got the worst backlash ever. Glad to see Gene's making a whole new video.

Gene, im just getting back into fishing (well really just starting, except for the occasional cast). I can't tell you enough how awesome these videos have been. Just bought a Lew's baitcaster and followed this video. Everything from the bucket to the black tape worked great. Thanks for making it fun, informative and being the normal guy I can watch for tips. Oh and the concept of cradeling the reel drastically improved the control I have.

I bought a Lews combo and had a terrible experience with it and threw it away. that was like a year ago. I'm a spinning reel guy but this new Daiwa bait caster I picked up is solid. I Spent a little more for quality and it has completely changed my views on these style of reels. I have had little to no birds nests so far lol.

This is great thank you so much I have used a baitcaster for 3 years and I still get back lashes. I cast like I would a spinning reel or push button so that could explain a lot. Hopefully with these tips I can improve my skills.

I have owned a baitcast (albeit a cheap one) and have been struggling to properly cast it even though I understand the fundamentals, it was practicing I struggled with). This is a great video. It's instructional for all those that are trying to get started in our hobby, especially for those that don't have anyone to teach them. I love your energy man, you definitely have a passion for this and it's obvious that you care about the up and coming folks.

I know this video is a bit older but thanks so much for all the videos! I went fishing with my brother's a few weeks back and was hooked. (no pun intended) lol I wanted my own stuff but didn't know where to start. Just put line on my reel and practiced outside for about an hour with a floating frog and I only back lashed once! These baitcasters are pretty fun! Gonna get out tomorrow and actually get around the water. Wish me luck!

used a spinning reel until last Friday, still have to remind myself do not cast a baitcaster like a spinning reel. just today I finally found that perfect setting to stop the backlash and cast farther. but still to perfect those casts and land lure where I intended to go.

I'd love to see an advanced baitcaster techniques video. There are so many beginner videos out there, but not enough on how to take it to the next level. Fine tuning your settings to eek out that extra distance, or how to correctly set up for different baits/weights/etc.

Best advice I've ever got from you on how to cast a baitcaster is that the cast should feel like throwing a baseball.

I'm definitely going to have to use the electrical tape tip, because I had a backlash from hell that I don't even want to talk about..........😂.... I had to get a pick and break the scissors out.
