This was fantastic. Precise for me, a new lady fisherman. I have done surf fishing twice in Florida and only caught an attitude. Going out again next week to practice. Wish me luck.

Excellent video, especially the tip re the finger crease. I've just gotten my first spinning reel, since I prefered baitcasters till now, but the KastKing Sharky III looked very promising on a long rod for beach fishing and extra distance, so I need to get to grips with it.

Very good tutorial but i advise to set the reel spool a bit former than your finger cause when you re casting the spool moves faster and the line hits the bail before you let the line go with your finger. Maybe premium reels like Shimano or daiwa does not do that often but with the momentum of your casting most reel spools turn and hinder the line’s movement by bail hitting it precasting Sorry for my English with technical terms.

Thanks for your channel, I have learned much. Was hoping you might be able to help me. I am an ultra light angler, I have started using braid for the first time: PE- 0.15 2.5lb, The line frequently is wrapping around the guides during the cast, especially the first guide (closest to reel) but sometimes higher up. Also I notice that my jig is often helicoptering-I know it is my cast because sometimes it does not helicopter. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hey man, great video. But, you did not talk about one important question (neither did any other youtube video) which I find very odd because it's crucial. Here's the question... A fisherman has two primary functions while using his fishing tool (aka. "fishing rod"), which are "Controlling (or holding) the rod" and "Controlling (or spinning) the reel". Assuming a right handed person using a spinning reel, Which hand should hold the rod, and which hand should spin the reel? This also affects which side you should have your spinning handle on your reel. I have an opinion on this. The hand holding the rod must be the strongest and most accurate. You need strength to cast well and to control the fish well and to land that big one! Because let's face it, while you're in a fight, it's the hand holding the rod that will be doing most of the work. This means that "holding the rod" takes preference and therefore needs your better hand! I ask this because where I live, many people do this wrong. They spin with the strong hand. They have the wrong understanding of how a spinning rod/reel should be used. They think the spinning is meant to "winch" the fish in, as opposed to the proper way, which is to intermittently pull the fish in using the rod (with the strong hand), create slack in the line and then winding that slack line on the reel. The other problem they face is having to switch hands every time they cast. Maybe you should have a video discussing this because this topic has not been discussed on youtube, not that I can find at least. All the videos that talk about "How to hold a rod" or "how to cast", all talk about what you have on your video. I'm right handed. My uncle which has never used a rod in his life, find's it very strange and wrong for me to be spinning with my left hand. He even makes jokes and finds it funny. I lost a big fish one time and he said that I would have landed it if I was spinning with my right (stronger hand). He just doesn't get it or he's just plain stubborn. He says "I don't want to use a rod. I'm happy hand line fishing". This is the BS you sometimes get from local fishermen here lol

Funny you mention switching hands when casting I see a lot of that and never understood why people would waist the effort of continuously switching hands. But I guess if you get the lure in the water it is better than just sitting at home watching TV. Great tips. Thanks

Hi Luke , Well presented, however!!! Should a note be inserted about protecting the index finger with tape Incase one is using braid..The weight of the lure will dictate when you use the tape.Medical is good ..It sticks to itself. Just a tip !!

I have heard that after we cast, and lure hits or is abt to hit the water, we stop the line with our finger... Then flip the bail and start reeling back.. how recommended is this stopping of the line with the finger.. logic is that we save a few winds of unneccesary line going wayward

Your finger should never touch the string. The bail (as you mentioned it) is down when you open it. Your finger should be touching the edge of the spool to keep it from moving. You release your finger from the spool to control line feed, put you finger back on the spool to stop line feed, very similar to a bait casting reel. Your finger should never touch the line. Try this I think you will like it.

Modern spinning reels are made to not be closed by turning the handle but flipping the bail. Though my 25yr old peen you can't close it by flipping the bail it takes turning the handle. But the reels are designed internally differently.

I never put my spin reels skywards it does not seem correct the backbone of the rod is not meant to load up backwards i always go with the rods backbone load it up that way makes a more springy projectory . if you load your rod against its backbone im shure one day it will snap .

At 3:55 you said flip the bail open. Actually, you are flipping the bail closed to retrieve line.
