In this educational video I demonstrate how to catch fry out of your pond without disrupting everything. A pond with koi or goldfish can quickly become overpopulated which can be very dangerous to the health of your fish. I will show you how to do it yourself using a simple and easy method. No harm comes to any fish. With all the babies you catch you can sell or keep them to see how they turn out. I keep them to see which ones I want to continue to grow. In upcoming videos you will see how they have grown and turned out. Please like and consider subscribing. I am trying to build my channel and with your help I will succeed.
Take care

Hi Chris, you are really brilliant with this system, you made me think of the gillnets they use in Southeast Asia to catch shrimp and crabs. That's a brilliant way to catch the fish out of the pond! Cool twine dispenser, too. I wonder if the fish ever get wise to the traps over the years? My fish seem to remember the net from the store and all flee into corners of the tank, even if I'm only using it to remove floating plant matter. Hope you're having a nice weekend, Chris and Sandra!

Thank you. Super helpful. I have two ponds. An upper pond with 14 koi and two very juvenile gold fish and a lower pond that didn’t have fish. They are connected by a stream too shallow for the fish to pass. My lower pond that didn’t have fish is now swarming with baby fish. We have no idea if they are koi or goldfish but given that the goldfish in the upper pond are only a few months old we are guessing they are koi. The pond size won’t support the several hundred baby fish. Draining the pond and getting rid of the babies would be a significant undertaking and would be emotionally draining for me. Your video gives me hope for how to reduce the fish load. And hopefully if they are koi the local koi shop will be willing to take them. Thank you.

Hey Chris - i got a minnow trap and it's great at catching the 2" koi and goldfish. I now have 3 2" ones in less than 2 hours. I like the fact it doesn't traumatize the fish or the pond chasing them with a net!! The hole is too small for the 4" fish that i need to catch as well. It looks like you were catching the larger fish with a different trap than the one i have. Can you tell me which trap you have that would work for the larger fish? Oh and what are you using for bait?? and BTW....Thanks for posting the video - it was quite helpful!!!

Hi Stubbs quick question for you are the fry when young, are they golden in colour like gold fish till they get a little size to them, then change to the reds and blue and blacks etc etc as you said in the video some dont change but the others did have some colour, or do they have the colour just after fry stage ? great traps as well work a treat 👍👍👍

With shubunkins.. I find if they are a bronze or greenish they tend to stay that way.. The odd will turn orange. They will get culled or moved on. The best ones when very young are translucent.. They will turn red and blue.. Some of the colours change much like a shiro or a showa

Hi Bob Unfortunately goldfish can be overpopulated in a pond in a short time. Depending on the variety and quality it may be easier to move them along. Common goldfish are a bit harder. Some people will take big fish and others will want small healthy fish for feeders. It's unfortunate but it is the circle of life. You can put out an add free to a good home. Again it all depends on the quality and variety of them Thanks so much for watching and commenting. Have a great day
