Nice work. Impressive range for roach fishing. I used to catch hundreds of small roach about 15 feet out from the bank at a particular venue until the new owners filled in one side of the lake to make room for caravans. This meant I was now fishing in 12 feet of water instead of the usual 5 or 6 feet. Immediately I began catching large roach, my best being a two pound specimen. The fish stayed even after all the dirt had been shovelled into the lake and the trees and weed removed.

I have had roughly 5 over 2lb roach from my local river (river Mersey) uk. Always with ground bait and 5 or so different coloured maggots on the hook, i didn’t realize they were so uncommon!
@Jessebella1
@Jessebella1 3 жыл бұрын
5 is not many though but well done, they are uncommon but it depends where you are, some parts of norfolk you can bag up on them in rivers, parts of kent has lakes loaded with 2 to 4lb roach, it depends really, i mean im from the era of roach fishing being trotting the rivers and so forth and not lakes, today roach are eating carp bait and all sorts in lakes and so it is just going to happen that they become full of large roach

Any roach over the magical 2lb (or 0.907185 kilos for Europeans) is a great fish. I haven't caught one yet.

Thanks for the kind comments Alex, glad you enjoyed the video. Yes, these tactics would work on a smaller water too. Fishing this way should hopefully pick out the bigger fish too. Good luck and tight lines, let us know how you get on!

What size boilie would you consider to be a mini boilie? And what size hooks would you use on the hair rig? Incredible roach
@AnglingDirectTV
@AnglingDirectTV 3 жыл бұрын
Either a 10mm or 12mm boilie is best for these big roach. A size 12 or 14 hook is perfect.

Shame a lot of our rivers dont throw up so many big roach although where there are barbel anglers regularly fishing big roach are making a come back and pellets and boilies are good baits for them.
@AnglingDirectTV
@AnglingDirectTV 7 жыл бұрын
I know Stephen, the bigger Roach are quite few and far between on our local river Wensum, however the river Yare produces some big'uns at the right time of year. I've heard that too, I think rivers like the Trent are producing some, like you say they're eating all the bolilies and pellets intended for the barbel!

What are Phil's preffered brands of boilies for big roach?
@AnglingDirectTV
@AnglingDirectTV 3 жыл бұрын
Phil has caught big roach on several different small boilies. Fishmeal based boilies have worked especially well. Cc Moore pacific tuna, sticky baits krill, Nash scopex squid have all worked very well.

Hi guys great video.with the helicopter rig do u fish tight lines cus I'm always thinking the baits lifted of the bottom when tight and not feeling very confident catching a fish
@philspinks4142
@philspinks4142 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Scott, yes definitely fish tight lines. It helps with the bolt effect of the rig. I’d say 50% of your bites will be drop back bites too. Unless you where fishing very close range I doubt you would be able to lift the baits off the bottom.
@scottmitchell2327
@scottmitchell2327 3 жыл бұрын
Ok thanks very much also I had a few runs and wen I picked up the rods most of the time the fish would of already got of I'm thinking it was because I was using barbless hooks would you say that is the reason
@philspinks4142
@philspinks4142 3 жыл бұрын
@@scottmitchell2327 could be a few reasons. If the bites are twitchy are not particularly positive it’s often down to small fish. Micro barbed hooks are better if allowed. If you are hair rigging mini boilies keep the bait tight to the hook. Also it help if you sit right next to your rods so you can act quick when you get a bite. Ohhh and don’t strike too hard, the roach are hooked already when the bobbin moves so just lift the rod off the rests. A hard strike can pull the hook out of the fish. Hope this helps? Regards Phil

Joe Alexander 0 seconds ago Ive only recently stumbled upon your videos phil and i have to say im finding them really enjoyable and imformative😊 your enthusiasm, Integrity and knowledge are clear to see and even though u seem to give advice and tips on certain tackle and equipment its obvious you dont try to plug specific manufacturers as much as most of the other videos seem to do, more so than concentrating on the actual fishing in my opinion. Its so refreshing. I have always been into my tench fishing but after watching your videos i really want to get into this type of fishing. Ive just placed a large order from Angling direct you will be pleased to know😂 im pretty confident i have eveything i need to get going. I do however have two questions if you would be kind enough to try too answer for me. Or at least shed some light on for me. Firstly i would like to know if you think a shimano 4000 size baitfeeder reel would be ok for this. I was going to go for the 2500 but thought i could use the 4000 when im method feeder fishing aswel for carp on commercials. Also would a medium 11 foot feeder rod with the 3oz tip be ok for the job. Save me having to fork out for a new 1lb test curve. I do have a 1.25 tc korum all rounder rod but worried this might be a little over-gunned and might bump a few off. I have seen on other videos that the 3oz tip could also help to reduce hook pulls. Any replies would be greatly apreciated 👍🎣

Lovely fish, but not a good species to put in a keepnet in my opinion. Scale and fin damage are almost inevitable on such delicate old fish.

An informative and enjoyable video. I'm staying in the lodge at the end of May and fancy a crack at the roach. How would you approach it in late spring/summer conditions?

Thanks Paul, glad you enjoyed it. I'm jealous! Haha! The lodge looks lovely and the lake is something else! In all honesty I'd probably fish exactly the same way we did in the video, am sure you'd get amongst a few! Hope that helps.

It's my third trip and I've had plenty of tench, bream, roach and small carp, but only one decent carp, despite working really hard. I don't suppose you have any pointers to avoid the smaller fish? Boilies only is my intention but even with that approach I've struggled to avoid the "pasties". Any help you can give would be much appreciated. I also fancy a crack at the cats after landing one last year.

It's my third trip to the lodge and I still haven't managed a carp over 20lb, though I've had lots of big fish of other species. I don't suppose you have any ideas how to avoid the smaller stuff aqnd get amongst the big ones?
@AnglingDirectTV
@AnglingDirectTV 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul, to tempt the bigger fish perhaps cut down on the quantity of smaller freebies? Perhaps up the size of your hook bait? Or perhaps try a different area? If not sometimes it can just be a case of being patient and fishing through the smaller fish. Hope that helps a little. (I'll have a word with Phil for you too and see if he has any other pointers.)

Thanks so much for the reply. Last year I ended up using 20mm boilies only for the second half of the week, in quite large quantities, and got a lot of 6-10lb carp. I also got through sacks of mixers and could only get hundreds of roach taking them. I've really been struggling!
