One of the first videos that I uploaded on KZfaq was an American Eel that I caught in a small creek in southeastern Pennsylvania. I was surprised how many views it got so I decided to meet up with my buddy John and make a video on how to catch fresh water eel.
Location : creek (Southeastern PA)
Rig : 6 pound test, ultra light rod and reel, split shot, size 4 Eagle hook
Bait : Hot dog
Fish : American Eel

I grew up in LaPorte, Indiana. There is a large round weedy lake there called Clear Lake. When I was a 8 year old, my Dad was a powerful swimmer and would drop his pants and jump into and swim to the center of the lake and back while we three boys watched and waited. Last time he did that, he came out of the water and showed a long cut around his leg, in a spiral, the length of his leg .He wondered what did it. That was way back in 1958. Flash forward to 1994 and at the same lake, the local newspaper showed a picture of 4 black men who had been fishing and they were each standing about 4 feet apart and above their heads were each holding, part of a measured 20 foot freshwater eel, with both hands. Its head was massive! No doubt, that was what had cut my Dad's leg with its fin as it swam tightly around his leg, checking him out. You could see the fin in the picture.

@@delconashvilleline what is even weirder is that LaPorte is 12 miles from Great Lake Michigan so it is assumed that the Eel traveled at night during a wet season 12 miles until it happened upon the Clear lake on the north side of town ,toward Lake Michigan. Its size is probably due to fact it reached full maturity at Great Lake Michigan before coming inland, and it had to be 40 years old unless it was born more recently. Strange. If it had been seen in Loch Ness in Scotland, they would have called it ,"Nessy". lol

We've got a stream here in South Taranaki, New Zealand that is literally teeming with 2 metre long thick eels but due to tribal tradition this one creek is a safe haven for them. I remember we'd always take down any leftover dinner scraps for the eels at the creek. I'd literally forgotten all about it until one time my nephew asked me at the supermarket if we could buy some cheap bread to take down to the eels. The only thing we eat from this particular stream is freshwater crayfish and Kākahi which are freshwater mussels from the lake (Which is the headwaters for the aforementioned stream)

You are correct! Here in the United States they are mostly nocturnal as well. However, in the hot summer months you can catch them in the day and at night. Good question. A lot of fisherman in the northeast United States have certain fish that they catch for food and certain fish they catch for sport. For example: trout is a common fish that people catch and eat while bass is generally a catch and release fish (some people keep bass but the vast majority practice catch and release). I guess the thought process behind it is that fishing is a skill and I want to keep that skill sharp. I don't currently need to fish for my food but in case I do I want to make sure I have the skillset to catch them. If you're curious to see me catch and keep a fish. I have a rainbow trout catch and cook video where I catch the fish at the creek and cooked it there.
