How to catch more trout in Niagara: River Rigging 101

In this quick video I discuss some different and effective options for rigs to use when trout fishing on the Niagara River. Although I am using the perspective of a boat angler, these tricks will work from shore too.
Always pay attention to all aspects of your setup and don't be afraid to make changes throughout the day if you stop getting bites. Most of the time trout are willing to bite, but the challenge of catching them is figuring out what they will put in their mouth.

Interesting suggestion...never used yarn in the Lower, and never considered it mostly due to the turbulent current in that river (I'm guessing the yarn somewhat mimics a jig). Will give that a shot next time I'm down there! I've often noticed the bite simply turns on and off in that river at specific times during the day. Sometimes switching up the color works, other times I have to completely switch up the baits I'm using.

Yarn is a nice option when fishing in cold water or around a lot of snags. It is very floaty in the water and moves very naturally when fished behind a bead (tandem) or on its own. Sometimes when the water is really clear, it can't be outfished. Tight lines in the new year!

@@lylegayder Will definitely give it a shot. Only have a couple of colors for yarn, I believe chartreuse and pink right now, so I will try it next time I'm out! Proves steelhead will eat almost anything...a buddy of mine caught one which he filleted later that day, had a whole hot dog in its stomach.

When the trout bite gets tough and other people are catching and I am not I usually just whine and complain and then park my boat in a heated shop and switch to ice fishing.
