How to Change a Cue Tip - Pool Tutorial | Pool School

In this video we look at how to change a cue tip on a pool cue. This is done on an English pool cue cue but the same technique applies for any glue on tips used in various cue sports such as billiards and snooker. Re-tipping a cue can sound like a scary task but with a few little gadgets and some patience it's not as difficult as you might think.

Love this as my tip needs to be changed but Lockdown is the reason why I don't cause I don't have a table at home...

Another helpful video! Never seen a tip sander before. I think I may acquire one. What grade of sandpaper do you use please? How long does it take you to adapt to a new tip. I think I let my tip wear down too much before replacement which means that I loose feel with the new tip. Takes a few days of play before it feels “right” again! Interesting that you use a separate break off cue and I have been thinking of buying one. As an aside I have replaced my cue ball with the pro cup smaller spotted one and it is amazing how much more spin I can generate without much effort although top spin requires extra force. Also getting used to the different deflection angles and one of your previous videos was a very helpful guide as to how the smaller cue ball reacts! Cheers.

Great video! Another tip I recommend people to do when re-tipping (I do it myself when I re-tip my cue), is to use some wire wool (the finest grade there is, it doesn't damage the cue) on the ferrule after sanding. It takes off any chalk/muck that might be on there and also gives it a nice shine whilst you're re-tipping. I also use wire wool every now and again to smooth the shaft of the cue, works better than a towel (but I don't use it as often as a towel), I always keep a bit in my case.

I use metal polish and #0000 steel wool (cover the tip with tape) and it polishes it super well

Good video, I like the first gadget. I agree the non gel super glue is too brittle and the tip comes off in play.

Sometimes that sound comes from the ferrule becoming loose. Feel the ferrule and see if it moves, even a tiny movement can cause a strange sound when playing shots.

Great guide! Maybe I'll retip my cue since I can't go anywhere and play at the moment. I usually let the guys at the club retip for me.

Craig I use 9mm on both. The older cue is not a special breaking cue or anything, just a slightly shorter one I use at home sometimes.

@@PoolSchool Ah okay, thanks for the reply! Think mine is currently around 9, just ask because at my last local most of the top players were using really small tips...must have been around 8mm and was thinking of trying one out!

I’m hopefully looking to be playing a lot more tournament pool after the outbreak, and have a few tournaments coming up later on in the year, for the moment I don’t have my own table so use the local Riley’s, tables are very good in terms of them Been straight and good cloths etc and are looked after pretty well, however there obviously used a lot and there not very clean any tips or videos on how to get the cloth as clean as possible aside from the usual brushing to get the best out of it?

It's difficult when it's not your own cloth, not much more you can do on a public table other than request a brush. With a private table then regular brushing is obviously important. If it's a napped cloth then something called blocking also helps. Take an off cut of cloth and wrap it around the table brush. Then using the flat wooden back of the brush, drag the cloth covered brush down the table in the nap direction. This really helps to flatten down the fibres and pick up any extra chalk. Ironing is also very good for napped cloths.

Westley Smith I have video about simple screw back that’s worth watching, but when it comes to getting lots of action on the ball it’s not just about power. You obviously need to hit the ball fairly firmly but it’s more about timing and you need to be accelerating through the ball. If you try to hit too hard you can end up decelerating and actually achieve less screw back. You’re cueing also needs to be really straight and make sure you are pushing right through the cue ball.

No it's an English pool cue, although it's not hugely different.

Generally speaking a softer tip will allow you to impart more spin on the ball but will become misshaped more easily. A hard tip will last longer and hold it's shape better but is not so good for putting spin on the ball. They are very much a personal thing as people like a certain "feel" when they hit the ball. How can I tell which side of the replacement tip attaches to the cue? Is it the side that seems slightly laminated, or the side that seems more like cork? I understand it has to be sanded anyway.

Hmmm, what sort of tip is it? I usually use leather tips and it’s pretty easy to see which way up it goes. Is the tip completely flat on both sides? Not sure what tip would have cork in it?

@@PoolSchool I don't know what kind, except it's the most basic glue-on kind that would come with a cheap tip repair kit. The side that seemed to be the right material for contact with the ball was completely flat. The other side, with the thin plastic on it, had a slight bevel. I sanded that side down, sanding off the plastic and getting it as flat as I could, then attached that side. I hope that was right.

There's a slight issue with this method. Using a top sander to create a flat surface on the ferrule end is fine, I bought one after seeing this video. I have seen one before, a ew years ago now but never thought of buying one till I saw this, was a reminder that this tool is available. The problem is if you put the back of the new tip on sandpaper and go round in circles, it will take the chalked surface off but it won't be flat, it will have a curved surface. It may not be noticeable but it could mean the difference between the tip not staying on or a tip having a plasticky feel when striking the cue ball.

I’m not 100% sure to be honest. I use Elkmaster Pro tips on my main cue but I have a feeling this might just be a standard Elkmaster.

Try using a pencil sharpener to take the edges of the tip off. Will also make sure the tip is stuck on properly. If the tip comes off when using a pencil sharpener it probably wouldn't have stayed on long anyway.

there any videos on twisting your back arm? When I pull the back the arrows twist meaning am twisting my arm..Any help 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Pool School when I pull the cue back and deliver the cue the arrows on the cue twist too the left meaning am not pushing the straight forward if that makes sense.A friend watched me and said I was twisting my wrists 🤷🏻‍♂️Not sure how to correct this? Any help would be appreciated thanks

@@postyboy007 It's hard to say what you're doing without seeing it myself but you certainly shouldn't be "twisting" your wrist. It should only be pivoting on the same plane as your elbow pivots. The best thing to do if you can is set up a camera and do a little self analysis. You need to see it for yourself to be able to address it. Watch my stance video and it does talk about how all of the arm movement should be on one plane, in line with the shot line. If you are twisting the wrist it might be that you are gripping the cue too tightly. As a test, try holding the cue with just your index finger and thumb and swinging the cue back and forth and see if it's still twisting. Hopefully if you can video yourself you'll be able to see what you're doing wrong?
