Want to save time and money? Want to be a dirt bike badass? Then change your own freakin' tires. Motorcycle Superstore's front man walks you through his preferred technique for changing a rear tire. JC covers the tools necessary and explains why he prefers specific ones. He demonstrates how to perform the work and talks through the reasons for each step. This video is great for beginners or experienced spooners so feel free to share it if you find it helpful.
Is it the absolute best method? Probably not, but JC learned the basics and then started tweaking the process as he discovered new tricks and tips that work better. You're here, so you're on the right path. Watch other videos, talk to riding buddies, and when someone is doing a change don't stand around like a wanker, pay attention or help out so you can glean as much info as possible. Once you try several techniques, take the best of each and blend them together.
Changing motorcycle tires is a pain, but the more we ride, the more we have to deal with this regular maintenance. Rear tires are much more difficult than changing a front, and unfortunately they need to be replaced more often. Don't sweat it. It's not as bad as you think. Like with any new project, the first few times are tough, but once you develop a few tricks it'll be easier every time. Eventually, you might even enjoy it. That's what JC discovered after years of spooning new and used tires. Once you become even mildly proficient, tire changes require far less time than it takes to remove the wheel, drive across town to a bike shop, wait around, drive home and reinstall.
Sometimes you don't need a full tire change, just a tube. In that case, simply pull one side of the tire off the rim, yank the old tube out, stuff in a new one and then proceed as described. Aside from wheel removal and installation, the same techniques apply to changing the front tire.
Remember, if you're fighting it, you're not doing it right. Relax, push that tire down into the rim well and take your time. Oh, and have at least one spare tube on hand because you will pinch it at some point!

It was when you said "if you're willing to be a man about it" that I decided to give it a go. I used all the basic stuff just like you did to see if it was possible, and I had never changed a dirtbike tire before. Seriously, this video is spot on! So much easier than I thought! Just did my rear tire for the first time. Tire irons-check, tire-check, murderous rage- check. I was ready to throw the tire across the yard, after a lot of swearing and sweating I got it done. Glad I did it instead of paying someone but my blood pressure was up. Cheers.

Motorcycle Superstore Same here lol... Im about to try to put on a Shinko 705 130/80/17 on my '14 KLR. Wish me luck, as this is my first bike tire change attempt. I dont even have an air compressor, but i DO have a tank of nitrogen that im hoping has enough psi left in it to complete the tire change lol.

Young man you did an excellent job explaining this!!! I'm 65 years old and I have battled several times installing tires on my Honda XR650L!!! I think the key for me was doing it on the ground. You can put pressure with your knees and get better leverage!!! I also liked the part where you used a bicycle pump to air it up!! I always carry a small one with me!! Keep up the good work!!! Thank you!!!

Great advice. Wish I had of watched this two weeks ago before getting a flat trail riding with a mate. Lucky for me my mate was not only proficient in changing a tube, but he also had the right tools (and a spare tube). The point you made I liked the most was the one about making sure you leave the spacers on the same side as the wheel when you remove them. I ride a 17 yr old XR250 and realized (after much swearing and sweat) that the spacers are different sizes and had tried to get the rear wheel back on with the spacers on the wrong side.....DOH! I also discovered that I didn't have a rim lock on my rear tyre (the reason for the flat) so it was off to the local shop to have one installed. Again, great video, and thanks.

JC, Thank you for this awesome vid. Used your method and was succesful in changing both front and rear. Had to sweat and bleed a bit to get the Sand Paddle rear to break bead, but after that your advice was spot on! The Motion Pro tire spoons were the best. Thanks for the killer vid!
@motorcyclesuperstore

I've been waiting to hear a real success story! So glad it helped, Robert Stronach, and kudos for gritting it out. It gets easier every time, I promise. One tip for getting old knobbies to pop off the bead is to ride around for a few minutes. Take a few psi out and it helps even more, just be careful riding on a low tire. It generates heat in the rubber and softens the sidewall. *Not* something to try with your paddles since riding on hard ground will destroy them pretty quick, but it might help the next time you grab the spoons. You can always remove the wheel and put the whole thing in the sun, too. Sometimes they're just going to make you bleed no matter what! I had to leave it out of the video but a cold beer helps with the sweating and bleeding part... - jc

Great vid, and presentation. I have changed a few now and it is always hard. My tyres were very hard to get the valve in and watching that part again popping it off on opposite side did not help but fiddling with a lever in that way let me get to a position to get it in. I tried as an experiment over on both sides to try to get the valve in but then you cant get the rest of the tube in easily. I did not put in the tube first. I put the tyre on and then put in the tube, pump it up a little as I find that reduces chance of pinching. Took me a few hours though. I have watched tyre guys here play around with the bead to centre the rim when it wont pop on the bead in on a tubeless. Loosen it all off work tyre levers in on far side of bit that wont pop and loosen it a bit. Guys who do this everyday get really good at reading how to push the tyre around to make it easier. Also degree of difficulty is changed by size of tyre and stiffness of rubber. Yours went on easily and you can get your hand in for the valve but mine were much stiffer. Anyway never give up and you get better with practise and having good levers helps.
