Always put the plug in while fiddling with little parts - saves having to dismantle the 'U' bend to retrieve them!

Should have cleaned the sink surfaces first before fitting. Also, your screwdriver is undersized, which is why you kept slipping and potentially scratching the sink surface. Use a 2p or 10p piece instead to apply even pressure and also less risk of over-tightening.
