......I've been doing my substrate changes the hard way, since I started the isopod hobby a tad over a year ago. I watched this last night and tested it out today with my Cubaris sp. Panda King bin. I think my sifter has bigger holes but I still managed to save a TON more substrate ingredients than usual! -less new substrate needed each changing which means saving $! Yay!- Plus I'm pretty sure my P.K. bin was so full of springtails that they were outcompeting my struggling P.K.s. I only saw 19 P.K.s and only 3 or 4 were adults...... But not anymore! The springtails that fell through the sifter are getting frozen

I agree Rus, this is a PAIN in the bottom. No easy way to do this but using the sifter is interesting. The person mentioning incorporating feeding into isolating them seems like a possibility.
@Aquarimax

Supreme Gecko Thanks Wally! The sifter does help get rid of the lion’s share of the frass, while preserving most of the adult and subadult isopods, but like you say, no easy way. I loved that suggestion about feeding, too. 👍

@@Aquarimax i actually love doing things like this and just changed out my smoky oak millipede’s soil and there was lots of babies unfortunately I accidentally left the lid off to the enclosure a while back and step on one of the adults in the middle of the night felt so horrible but learned a valuable lesson that day double check everything but still have one adult female and a ton of babies

Hi Rus, have you considered putting them in a setup where you slowly let the whole thing dry up and they have no choice but to move (through some divider) to wetter pastures? I got the idea from antkeeping, it's one of the ways you can get a colony to move from one formicarium to another.

Heard the cat feeder go off in the beginning, and was wondering how ours got set to the wrong time, until I saw your cat strut by. I have a couple different types of drosera (carnivorous plant) near my isopod colonies, I feel like capensis does the best, but spatulata is pretty too. I wanna set up a nice terrarium with them and the isopods, but I just can't think of a way that wouldn't kill the plant long term. For now they keep the gnats out of my living room at least.

Great video, Rus. Do you think something like Traeger's hardwood signature blend (hickory, maple, and cherry) wood pellets could be used to mix with the organic compost, too?
@Aquarimax
@Aquarimax 5 жыл бұрын
Cole Schramm Great question....I have used hickory and maple wood, so I know those are ok. I know cherry can be toxic in certain situations. I am not sure whether it is toxic in the processed pellets or not though...

Not much you can do... maybe add spring tails... or rather just wait and let your isopod out compete them mites... and limit your supplements foods.. mites love that stuff

how often do we need to clean isopod cage?
@Aquarimax
@Aquarimax 5 жыл бұрын
Jonathan it depends on how many isopods, size of enclosure, depth of substrate, etc. Ideally, I would say every 3 to 6 months. Topping off with additional leaf litter can help extend that.

Hi again. How the isopod in the iso compose will be able to drink without sphagnum moss?
@Aquarimax
@Aquarimax 3 жыл бұрын
Good question. Sphagnum moss provides an excellent way for the isopods to hydrate, but the moss itself is not necessary as long as the isopods have an area sufficiently of sufficiently damp substrate. I actually kept isopods for years successfully without using sphagnum moss at all. I use it now because it retains moisture very well.
