How to change carbon brushes in a central vacuum's motor

In every central vacuum there is a motor, and in every motor there is a pair of carbon brushes. These carbon brushes wear out after approximately 500 hours of usage and must be replaced. Several types of motor exist and the carbon brushes are not always installed the same way.
This video explains how to replace the carbon brushes in different motor configurations.

I read on an Electrolux forum that you have to hone the new carbon brushes. What does that mean? Do you have to shape the brush heads somehow? Thanks

At Drainvac, honing a new carbon brush is unheard-of. We recommend avoiding direct contact with your bare hands to prevent any oil deposit, but the carbon brushes are designed to be installed as is without tampering with it beforehand.

My Beam motor is tripping the reset button. I have taken the unit out and cleaned the comutator? The part the brushes touch. The motor itself spins freely. Lots of sparks fly off the brushes. Then motor trips out after a few seconds. 8 seconds later I can hit the reset button. And it will run for another 2 to 5 seconds. Do you think new brushes will fix it? Anything else I should check? Thanks...

Short circuit or overheating.

He says to never touch the tips of the "brush" yet never says why. If its just because of tiny amounts of "oil" from your hands that could get on the tip of the brush, then I hardly think that would really matter. These things spin at thousands of revs a second, metal on metal contact points for the brush. Any oils or contaminants that may have been on them would be instantly burned off via friction.
