Are the freewheeling hubs on your 4x4 worn out (or is it Warn out? haha) and need to be replaced, or perhaps you're just changing from an automatic locking hub to a manual locking hub as is the case for me. It's a pretty easy job either way, so let me show you how it's done!

I solved the problem of the 4x4 functioning by mounting the tyrex manual hubs instead of the automatic hubs that always gave problems in my 2001 Suzuki Jimny 4x4 with m13a motor and to replace the automatic hubs and overhaul the vacuum system for inserting the 4x4 I would have spent many euros between spare parts and labor! (greetings from Florence Italy!)

is it the same process for a 1996 suzuki Vitara ? and thanks the vid was really helpful

There will likely be some minor differences but the basic procedure would be the same, yes. Locking hubs come in different shapes and sizes but the process of changing them is essentially the same for all 4x4s with standard axles. It's a bit different for 4x4s with full floating axles but that isn't the case for your Vitara.

cordial greetings from Italy Florence the Suzuki jimny 4x4 uses a lot of gasoline because it has the smallest fuel tank with a liter capacity. It has a problem with the automatic buckets because the vuoto system that arms the automatic buckets wears out! tirex manual hubs for me the manual hubs are better than the original factory Suzuki automatic hubs!)

Dear, thank you for the video and all advice. I have a 130 defender 2012 and I would like to use freewheels hub too. Have you some knowledge if it is possible ? Thank you for your feedback. Laurent Switzerland

Hey there! I don't know very much about defenders (they're very rare here) but the process for changing the hub should be essentially the same. As long as there are freewheeling hubs that will fit on your axle, it should work. I know some of the older Land Rovers had them, and maybe the axle is the same - but if not there's likely an aftermarket company that makes them.

So you stop Jimmy put main gear in neutral , pull hand brake, get out twist that 4wd hub key to 4hi then get in shift transfer case gear knob to 4hi , release hand brake drive it on 4hi . Then repeat opppsite way to get back to 4hi. I wanna learn since Jimny are electronic and vacuum line operating hubs how have you trucked the ecu and those front hub vacuum lines ?? In order to make all work with manual free locking hubs?

My Jimny was not electronic 4x4, it was a manual lever. All I had to do was plug the vacuum line for the hubs and use the manual hubs instead.

Ad a little grease (or in this case spray lubricant) to the locking hub assembly to. I would use gun grease - not wheel bearing grease.

Are you still happy with the manual hubs? Are they still working?
@watchmework7672
@watchmework7672 3 жыл бұрын
Yep! They're still working perfectly. It's a tiny bit more effort to engage them manually vs the old vacuum operated ones but the peace of mind is worth it to me. I didn't want to risk one of the vacuum lines being damaged while off road and losing 4x4 operation. Now I know for certain they will remain locked until I choose to unlock them.

After you did this did your 4wd light still work
@watchmework7672

It still illuminated, but it would blink at me - indicating there was an error. I believe there may be a way to fix this, by fiddling with the vacuum lines in some way, but I never bothered to do that. The blinking green light was never very noticeable to me when I was off road either way.

Are these the raptor hubs?

No, they're just the cheap ones from the Jimnybits website. AVM knock offs far as I can tell.

Are manual hubs better than automatic?
@campbemj180
@campbemj180 2 жыл бұрын
Function the same basically, but manuals are more trustworthy. If a vacuum line fails or an auto hub fails it’s typically the system that engages it that’s the issue and then you’re out of luck. Since you do manual hubs by hand, they just work.
@watchmework7672
@watchmework7672 2 жыл бұрын
As camp said, they're not better or worse - but they're more reliable. My 4x4 had vacuum operated hubs and I was concerned that the vacuum lines would get damaged while I was off road. This would disable my 4x4 system and potentially leave me stranded. That's why I replaced them with manual hubs.

Nothing like watching some one bashing on the wrong size or type of tool on an instructional video Probably better to use breaker bar to crack open or undo a nut or bolt than a ratchet unless you want to keep the tool shop in business Also better to use marine bearing grease considering the hubs will be under water from time to time

@@watchmework7672 man it must be annoying getting that sort of comment on a video you made. What a dick. Not only is he wrong, he was a dick while being wrong as well. Your video was great man. I admire the fact you made it on the fly, framed it well and kept out of the way of the shot the whole time. That takes some skill and experience. I'm just about to do this to my Surf (you guys call them 4Runners), so just watching a couple of videos to refresh my memory on how they go on. Thanks for the video.
