I know I've made videos before changing oil, but I had a good number of people asking me to please run through all of the maintenance on the VStrom as I did on the CBF1000. So I'm going to try to do that :) As always any other requests please let me know. :)

Who's yelling about using old oil to lube the gasket on the filter? It's not like it's going to be a consumable going back into the engine. Sheesh. Personally I use a touch of new oil but old oil works too.

Oh I've had comments in the past, I've also been called disgusting and a mess for spilling oil in the past. Comments on the internet are wonderful. I could cut all the actual stuff out but normal people need to see shit happens. Also yes, it's literally just giving the gasket some lubly lube. I'm too lazy to get new oil :D

Nice little vid. Seems a simple bike to work on. In the past I've dropped some oil in the filter prior to fitting. No reason other than to be different 😂

So far very easy to work on, The tank looks like it'll be a bit of a pain to remove completely but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. Haha sure sure, where are the bodies buried Stuart :D

Reminds me I need to do an oil change on my V-Strom. And I picked up an SW Motech skid plate for it too! Excited to get that on there. What skid plate did you decide on? Nicely done with the video. Very informative and spot on with everything. Also Motul is my go-to for oil as well. Call me weird but it also smells really good. I don't pre-fill. It's too messy. The oil is going to immediately try to leak when you go to put the filter on unless you just wet the inside of the filter with a light coating. It doesn't make a difference and isn't recommended by the manufacturer I don't think?

The lovely Stroms deserve lots of fresh oil. Especially since they don't hold that much! Ah very nice, I went with Hepco & Becker, I'm just hoping I can get them to fit with my engine bars! Thanks :) Haha it actually does smell very good :D Especially the 7100. It's pointless on most filters, it they're upright in the engine bay like on bigger vehicles then fair enough, saves some time so I probably would. No they don't, not that I've ever seen anyway :)

I may prefill the filter and lube the seal with fresh oil, but I’ll reuse the same crush washer till kingdom come, if I can get away with it. 😂

I should give my Gixer an oil change I guess, think it deserves one now I have the gearing changed. Ha... I don't prefill my filter, but I do oil the seals and don't pour away any that gets into the filter! 😀

Ohhh...where did you get all those copper washers from??? I pissed myself when you were like "what is happening??". Easy access to oily bits is nice. My ZX10 is brilliant for oil chainges. Nothing needs to come off and oil doesn't spill over headers unlike the GSXR or Busa. I don't pay attention to torque specs on oil drain bolts either. Good vid. OC: No, well I do on my Diesel truck. It's vertical and very large so it makes sense but not on any other vehicles.

Amazon :D Boring I'm afraid. Or ebay, actually not sure. Hahaha man I was crying afterwards trying to figure out what the hell made the oil butcher the laws of physics. Yeah anything that's nice to service is way way better! The GSXR was grand and all but even taking all the fairings off can be a pain. Thanks amigo! Well that's fair enough, if you can fill it without spilling it it makes sense.

A good oil change. You hit all the right points. I don't pre-fill the filter but I have been measuring my oil. I think I'm at the point I don't want to do that any more. I'll just take my time and watch the sight-glass since it can take a few moments to rise there on my bike. How do you feel about after starting it and letting the filter fill up the level being right at or very close to the top of the sight-glass line? Would you attempt to remove some or just let it ride?
@TheGorillaBiker
@TheGorillaBiker Жыл бұрын
Danke sir. You can but the thing is you'll have minor difference in castings and other tolerances that mean you'll still need to keep an eye anyway, I knew ballpark numbers anyway since Suzuki are kind enough to have it on the case :) 2700ml without filter change. If it's very close to the max line I'd personally leave it, you've a little bit of tolerance there anyway, once it's not a considerable distance away from max fill it should be fine.

What are you complaining?! Your Suzuki indentifies as a Harley! It was simply marking its place like a Harley does ahahhaha xD Always lub the oil filter, can go with old oil, does not cause issues from my point of view! :P Prefilling or not... I guess that it does not cause a big difference.... And remember, I may be insane! But in the membrane.. So yeah we will be waiting on the skid playe video! :D
@byDanimal

No Luis, you are right on. You should lube the filter gasket with a touch of oil.
@TheGorillaBiker
@TheGorillaBiker Жыл бұрын
Hahahaha nah the oil identified as a wild goose making a break for freedom. Yep, le gasket always needs lube. Otherwise they can bond to the case which makes getting it back off very not fun. Prefilling is a massive waste of time, especially since most people pour it in the the centre, which is silly goose behaviour. Soon! Hopefully tomorrow! :)

Could never see the point of pre filling a side mounted filter. More chance of spilling it on the floor. I do pre measure the amount of oil I need and add it to the bike. I bought an oil container that catches the oil and it the runs into an internal container. Less chance of spilling it when you accidentally bump it.
@TheGorillaBiker
@TheGorillaBiker Жыл бұрын
Me neither. And people always pour in the centre too which doesn't even do anything. I sometimes do, but when there's a nice sight glass I generally don't. If it's a dip stick I do. I have one of those.....but it's full after doing the cars 😂 I need to go empty it 😂

Question? Do the manufacturers sod about pre-filling filters on the assembly line? Question? What should I do with my VIAR that doesn't have a filter thingy just a mesh thimble do da? Answers on the back of a postcard please. I have never managed an oil change without getting some on the floor, I thought that was normal. My old oil is taken away by various strange old boys who use it in their bikes . . . . That reminds me I shall have to change the oil in the VIAR it is the beginning of a new month and it only has 1 Litre in it . . . . My VIAR has a sump guard and that sends the oil from the drain hole everywhere and drips from every edge.... Something for you to look forward to. 👍

Haha no, no they do not 😂 I really don't know why some people are so crazy about it. Haha pre lubricate the screen thingy :P That'd please people :P Floor oil is expected but I always try avoid it as best I can 😂 I have to bring mine to a local advanced auto to dump in to their recycling vats. Oh 1 litre! That's like the CRF450L, think that only take a litre too. Haha I'll be taking mine off for access during oil changes!

Its not recommended to using fully synthetic in the Stroms as it may cause clutch slip.
@TheGorillaBiker
@TheGorillaBiker Жыл бұрын
Fully synthetic MA2 oil is recommended in my manual, I'll report back if I ever experience any clutch slip. You may be thinking of "energy conserving" fully synthetic engine oil, which it recommends against.
