another thing to check when you have belts of is the tensioner pulleys to see if they spin freely and smooth not dry. can have the bearings sieze up and wreck new belts before their time

Hey, there was one major thing you forgot to mention on that top pulley you don't beat it down you can break the bracket that holds the pulley, before you loosen that top bolt there is a 5/16 Allen centered on that pulley then it drop as you turn. The alternator tenisoner just loosen the front bolt the top alternator bolt then loosen the long bolt and it will start to move. No need to swing that arm down Thanks HB

Howard Bickley if you swing it down you have more room to work and for this particular vehicle room is something lacking when working on it.

Thank you for your comment I was beating the crap out of mine I knew that pulling needed to be loosened on my 1999 it's a 12 mm used a long open box end wrench

Great info HB, I just found the allen you were talking about today, the bearing on the tensioner pulley went last night while I was driving back from Denver, burned up the belt. I replaced the bearing and everything looks good. I wish I would have remembered your post this morning, because I still just wacked the pulley to get the belt loose. It seems to work but loosening the allen would have been better. :-)

Glad you found it helpful Freddrick, I'll be posting some new ones soon so please subscribe and I'll keep ya posted. I replaced the rear wheel cylinders about a month ago (back brakes were leaking like crazy) on this vehicle and just today I had to replace a bearing on the tensioner pulley.

I haven't done the alternator on this vehicle, but I'd check to see if there was an allen bolt on the pulley or something.

Please update the notes on your video for the top pulley the center bolt needs to be loosened before it slides down just a half turn and mine slid right down after beating the crap out of it and it didn't budge. The pully needed to be loosened on my 1999 Mercury villager it's a 12 mm used a long open box end wrench

I still can't get it to loosen up. I'm gonna go buy a longer 12mm wrench to try and loosen the pully center bolt. I've debated just cutting the belt the air conditioner doesn't work any how. I'm actually trying to remove the belts so I can replace the thermostat.

@@merbywerby you can get the thermostat off from above not too much hassle, but you have to have small hands and a 1/4" ratchet and short extension with a 12mm socket. You can reach all 4 bolts to break them loose with a 3/8 ratchet and deep 12 mm socket, but there isn't much room to swing the ratchet.

but it wouldnt come out and we had to put the other oil in it and we didnt want to over flow it what could happen if u overflow ur car?

mew belts will loosen up quickly so tighter than normal on tesioner. thanks for the insight. a hoist would be best bet for that job

1/2 in on a new belt is too loose. new belt will stretch quite a bit. or figure on retightening after a short period of time.

what is that circular thing next to the oil pan that is leaking on mine and it wont start all i did was do an oil change

You must mean the oil filter, that most likely isn't causing your problem. Might need more details though.

+Jesse Hoff no the oil filter i bought. put some clean oil on the rubber thing and srewed it back on by hand so i wouldnt make a hole in it then it started sputtering and leaking by a big bolted caged looking thing right by the oil plug thing where the oil comes out but its not the plug it self.we thought it was the wrong oil so we bought a higher milage oil and tried to drain the other but nothing not a drop came out from where it should have then i unscrewed the filter and my boyfiernd tried to start it at the same time and thats the only way we could get the oil out and it was all burned and dirty the first we drained was clean we could have even put it back in but we didnt so we poured the more expensive oil in and screwed the filter back on and tried to start it but this time it would cranck but not start is there anyone that knows what is wrong?

Might have burned up your cylinder walls by running the car with low oil. You don't need to run the car to drain the oil.

old post but to any new readers they dont just pop off after 150000plus miles depending on where you live we have road salt chloride issues and anything on the bottom side of car will be corroded. would pay to give all bolts involed a good dose of wd40 or any kind of penetrating oil perhaps a couple three times in advance of the project

Maybe two hours of time if he's being slow, I bet an experienced guy could do it in an hour.

Does anyone know the answer: I'm removing my alternator from a 1994 Nissan 4 cylinder automatic. I removed 2 bolts ( top and bottom ) and removed belt successfully. My alternator still isn't free. It swivels in place. What's holding it up a third bolt?

Doesn't sound like you loosened the Allen key on the upper bracket, though.

My daughter has a '94 villager and it won't run. It will crank and turn over BUT the distributor will not rotate so I'm guessing it is the belt. Any idea? Thanks, Jim

I've got a 94 Quest that is running on 4 cylinders. I changed the plugs, the wires, and the cap and rotor but those other 2 cylinders just won't run. I was thinking the injectors. Any ideas?

broken timing belt, non-interference engine, just line it up and put a new one, no damage to valves or pistons
