This worked! Thank you! Although, I used a thick ziplock bag and SOUS VIDE to maintain 185 degrees F for like 10mins and that was enough for my very small project.

The very last step that everyone misses is you have to spray the parts off with acetone...that reddish/blue/purple pen ink color is mucky dye that settles on the surface, rinse it off good with acetone and it will look factory made clean.

wait ... so you mean literally pour some acetone on the stuff after it's done with the dye?

@@optimafootworks9554 Yes, the dye soaks into the plastic coloring it and then mucky dye sits on the surface looking like it was colored on with a sharpie. I've done several nylon plastics and comes out looking factory made when rinsing in fresh acetone.

Im totally doing this! I cant find black plastics for my kdx200 and paint chips off so fast. I will have to do this just on a much bigger scale for maybe even my gas tank but definitely the fenders and number plate are getting dyed. I watched jake the garden snakes video and it didnt work well for him but he didnt use the dye more kind and i dont think he used acetone either. Thanks cam! You saved me a lot of headache and now my bike can look the way i want.

A little dish soap in the solution helps. Wash the parts in hot soapy water first then straight in the solution for 15 minutes or whatever time you're using. After rinsing and cooling you can run the process again. Soapy water preheat then another run through the solution. The second or occasionally third run really improved the brightness of the parts. The Rit synthetic graphite dye can improve the color when added to the black. Great video, sure beats painting plastic. 5% x 13oz = 6.5oz acetone. i found 10% works well for chainsaw plastics.

I think the acetone made it come out the way it did. I also think if you were a little more generous with the RIT it wouldve came out a deeper black. But definitely a good video very informative.👍 You always challenge your self with complicated tasks for these dirt bikes, i love to watch.

you suprised me! . most recent videos i watch use the Rit Proline . stuff which is very expensive like 30$+ per bag of poweder . your method is the 1st i have seen that uses acetone i think thats the trick!. nice work going to do my wifes xr80 this weekend just need to find a old container to dye in i assume after u you use the container you dont want to use it again for food .

Would this be applicable to something like a gundam model kit? Usually the parts come in sheets, so I think they'd color pretty evenly.

I dyed my white plastic yesterday using your method. I let them sit in the mixture for 1 1/2 hours. They turned dark brown. Should do any other dye to reach black or am I wasting my time?

Hey man i have a crf50f and when i turn the throttle the exhaust just spits out smoke. I’ve tried to adjust the screws but nothing has changed... brand new carb and still won’t run with choke off. Can u help??

I have a 2019 tacoma and was trying to use this stuff to dye my interior trim pieces that are a light grey color and the dye would not even set into it and would just bead right off or run off it any suggestions? I’m thinking the plastic is still smooth and kinda silky smooth?

So is it absolutely necessary to boil the mixture to 200 degrees? You said at the end that you left the radiator louvres over night, I assume you didn't heat them and stay up watching them? Do you think you would get the same results by just mixing a cold mixture with 10% acetone and leaving it at room temperature for 24 hours? Just trying to avoid the fumes or buying an electric stove. Thanks!

Hey Cameron. I have a 2016 Klx140l when I start it up it run perfect but when I turn the handlebars just a little bit the bike instantly shuts off. Do you or anyone else know what the problem would be.

Forgive me if this has been asked already but what's up with the type of plastic? I know PP plastic is unaffected by acetone but I assume plastics that will be damaged by acetone you can't use this method BUT can you substitute acetone with a different solvent?

I hope you do understand that by heating the solution up to 200F you have exceeded the boiling point of acetone (133F) so by the time your solution has gotten up to temp, most of the acetone is in your room, not in the solution…

Hey Cam! Great idea on the dye. I do have a comment/suggestion though. Wouldn't it make more sense to sandblast all the plastics with a fine media to score the surface so the dye could soak in?

What kind of plastic is this that your dying? Hdpe? Only time I've had to use acetone was with delrin. Usually vinegar was enough for polycarbonates

About to restore an 85 Honda Elite 150 and change the blue plastics to black. Going with the ruby red color scheme over silver it will stand out better. This will help with the non painted blue panels.
