When I did my apprenticeship I was always taught to clean around the filler plug before removing as you run the risk of putting dirt and grit into the rear axle when you stick the filer tube in. This is just good practice.

Always remove the filler plug before removing the drain plug. If for some reason you can’t remove the filler plug at least you haven’t drained the axle or gearbox and then have no way to refill!

Looks like you're using EP90 GL5 diff oil which, if it isn't marked as being 'yellow metal safe', eats away at the bronze thrust washers in the diff rather quickly. This is a nasty habit that the EP oils had from the outset, but GL5 seems 'hungrier' than most. If it isn't clearly marked as 'yellow metal safe' or something similar, it's advisable to go with the GL4 specification over the GL5. Hope that helps.

Interesting vid. But I would normally clean all around the area first to avoid any road grit or grime getting in the diff when filling. Its always best to drive the car first to warm the oil up before draining, and if you remove the filler plug after the drain plug the incoming air will help to drain the oil out a bit faster. If I may, one word of advice, any used automotive oil is horrible and carcinogenic, particularly EP80/90 - so be sure to use gloves to protect yourself. Can I request you do a gearbox oil change next?

the filler plug on ur axle? on my mates 1961 moggy has a filler plug on the side of the bit between the prop and the diff? wots that for?

that does seem a little unusual, i imagine its for either, filling up with oil, or possibly as an access to one of the mechanicals internally when stripping and rebuilding.

I hate the dog bone spanners as the 'square' tends to be tapered. This means as you apply torque to undo the drain plug it tends to jump out of the plug. Throw the darn thing in the trash. A quality socket set should have the part you need and use a breaker bar... That's what you need.

why do you think i went to the smaller socket afterwards!
