In this video, I show you how to change the oil in your Onan MicroQuiet 4000 RV Generator. I also discuss how often to change the oil, how much oil my generator takes and what special tools are needed.
MORE ABOUT THIS EPISODE
Full step-by-step instructions and parts list here:
rvwithtito.com/articles/onan-...
Performing regular oil changes on RV generator is important for keeping your generator functioning properly. You should change the oil at least once a year as recommended. Also, be sure to run your generator for at least an hour every month. While exercising your generator, turn on a few electrical components so that it has an electrical load on it.
I have an Onan MicroQuiet 4000 generator which does NOT have an oil filter. For other models, be sure to reference your owners manual for proper procedures and instructions.
This video is also addresses these topics:
Where is the drain plug on my onan generator?
Onan generator oil
Onan generator oil capacity

Excellent video overall. I have wondered how those ENCLOSED generators get oil changes, and now I know. One thing to understand however, is that quality oil does not deteriorate by itself in 12-months. If only a few hours of use is put on an engine, it is not necessary to change it every 12-months. That is a direct quote from a long time friend who worked at the MIT Sloan Automotive Laboratory.

Thanks for this. I did it on my QG 4000 this morning. I think that's the same model as the MicroQuiet. They changed the name. A note for anyone with the QG 4000 is that the drain plug needs a 12 mm socket, not 9/16 in. I guess the newer models are metric. I also did the fuel filter, air filter and spark plug with a maintenance kit I bought on Amazon. The fuel filter needs a 9/16 in long reach socket.

Although SAE-30 is good, 10W-40 or 50 is better for desert areas or hot climates in general. It is not necessary to warm up the generator before you drain the old oil, especially if it hasn't run for a while. Do not hold the stop button down. Simply push it and immediately release or you risk flooding the engine and leaving fuel in the carburetor. The electronic shutoff mechanism is designed to burn off any remaining fuel in order to empty the carburetor. Remember, the stop button is also the primer.

Most smaller generators do not have oil filters. I think the reason is hours. Small generators that they sell with wheel kits are changed at 20 hours. Larger generators 100 hours. The big generators that power buildings can go weeks but they have filters. In short change your oil when it is time to prevent damage. The other problem is to be sure to turn on lights or whatever you run to make the engine speed up. It's like a car that just sits at idle all day. It needs to run on the highway now and then. The generator is the same it needs to work or you could have problems after time.

@RVwithTito

A 10 to 20 hour break in period is usually standard on other generators. I'll have to double check to be sure. After that then every 100 hours or once a year, whichever comes first. I just do mine every spring.

Anyone notice that the brass drain plug doesn't have a gasket? I've lost some oil in the past, replace with a 1/2" drain plug - with gasket. I was going to get a drain plug gasket kit, but the original brass plug is round and can't fit a gasket, the new plug is fat at the threads end and make a tight seal with the engine.

Here's a little secret I found out. If you're only and runs for awhile and then shuts off and then cools off and starts up and runs for a while and then shuts itself off you've got a little bit too much oil in it. It's all gets hot and expands in the overfill shut off kicks in. Take a little oil out see if that doesn't fix it. Someone else probably commented this already but here you go

have you ever heard of people filling the oil only slightly above the "add" line in situations where the generator will run and suddenly shut down after 30 minutes to 60 minutes.

That 4K generator does not have an oil filter. The larger ones do.

Not a good idea to use pipe thread sealant on your plug. Those things are designed to seal without sealant so that you don't get junk (i.e. Bits of old sealant left in threads etc) circulating in and possibly clogging or restricting flow.

Same kinda guy that would endlessly dump bars-leak in a radiator, when tightening a hose clamp would solve the problem... Wish I could dislike this video twice.

You should never put thread sealant on the drain plug it will mix with the oil inside
@mikeinscore2272
@mikeinscore2272 2 жыл бұрын
NO NO NO ! Do not use pipe thread sealant on the drain plug! Any extra little blob gets mixed into the oil and it can easily plug an oil passage or get onto a bearing surface and wipe out a bearing. The drain plug gasket is all you need. For gods sake don't do this. I have seen poorly applied sealant get cooked to a cylinder wall and score the piston and ruin the cylinder.
