You forgot one important step. After adding oil and running the engine, check the oil level again. It will probably require an additional top up after the filter has filled.

Be sure to use a 6-point 10 mm socket for the oil drain plug. A 12-point socket will tear up the drain plug if it was tightened excessively by the last mechanic. (I did this - thank you Chevy dealer!) There is also an O-ring on the drain plug that needs to be replaced periodically - perhaps every couple of oil changes. Someone else suggested that the drain plug should be torqued to 10 ft-lb. This seems to be at about the point where it is just fully snug when tightening with a short handle (8") ratchet.

Thanks for the video. I'm changing my oil tomorrow in my Volt. I have about a year and a half on the oil and the car is telling me to change soon. I agree on use of Jack stands but also advise to not use Fram filters. Fram uses cardboard in the top of their filters where most filters use metal. Plenty of videos on KZfaq about the poor quality of Fram filters. Thanks again for the video.

2 problems I see with this oil change. Before installing the filter, fill the filter with oil, or the engine start is longer with no oil pressure. When adding the oil in the fill plug, make sure the amount added is the same as the owners manual recommends. In 1952 Ford came out with a 6 cylinder OHV engine without the rubber check valve on the oil filter. The oil filter was horizontal, so almost 1/2 of the filter would drain every time you shut off the engine. It did not take long before the engines became quite noisy. So why not fill the filter before installation. Particles larger than the filter removes may go to the engine, but better a bit dirty oil (from the clean oil can) than no oil at all. The reason to check the amount of oil versus the dip stick is dipsticks or owner manuals can be wrong. Too much oil in the sump causes agitation of the oil and air enters the oil with agitation. Best, if OEM would, install a pre lube pump and dry sump reservoir.

Back when I was younger when we changed the oil and filter, we checked the oil level after starting the engine. The idea being just pouring oil into the top may not fill the filter completely, but running the engine would. That was true back in 2013 but because people park their cars in garages, having the engine run automatically was considered dangerous (carbon monoxide entering the house). Chevy updated the software to turn this feature off. The downside is the entire car can get “cold soaked” if left outdoors for about a week in subzero weather. This usually means you may have trouble starting the car. This happened to me on a long business trip. It just took about 10 minutes of running the car to get it going but it is definitely “a thing”. Luckily the AGM 12 volt battery was new and had a full charge.

zero maintenance benefit to leaving filter off for more than a minute unless you're neurotic and it's in your head, but you might get grit in there and ruin your engine if it's too breezy so minimize the real risk and do it efficiently, put new filter on by hand, gently and then snug up another 3/4 turn until its not stoopid tight, but about 130# weakling tight, by hand, no tool. change every 2 years max if you rarely use the generator, or do 6-8,000 mile changes ( best as observations show some contaminants at 10k+ intervals)... so if you want to do great maintenance, do 6k or so... use ramps, fastened to long boards so they don't scoot away, even a thin board to fasten onto works. You can see the plug in the first picture, on the bottom of the pan next to the filter, then it's not there in the second video pics). USE ONLY a 6 point socket, 10mm size. Replace the rubber o ring on the drain plug bolt and wipe the plug end clean, it catches shavings of magnetic metals on it's magnet. 3.7 QT of 5-30 synthetic gasoline motor oil, with fram ultra XG3387A filter. also do the air filter every 15-30k miles or so, more if dusty kansas gravel roads or city smog driving, maybe 40k if no dirt roads and not in a large city /dusty environment.

Unless you are very aggressive with the brakes, you will likely never need to even change brake pads. The volt uses regenerative braking for most of your stopping force. Heat is the main cause of brake wear. The volt only uses the mechanical brakes for under 5mph and aggressive deceleration. My 2015 volt's brake pads and rotors look brand new still.

NEVER use Fram filters! They are awful, if you've ever taken one apart. Crappy quality, about the worst on the market. Use an A/C or WIX, or maybe a K&N. Also, check the required oil quantity, before you begin....at the very least, before you fill. It's not hard to get this information....look in your manual. Fill to the full mark. Check with vehicle sitting level, after giving it time to settle when you shut it off, after doing your LEAK CHECK, with engine running.

So, besides the obvious safety concerns that have been mentioned numerous times in the comments, you were using a 10mm socket there, not a wrench. A 6 point socket and ratchet work great. FYI 10mm is the socket or wrench size, and NOT the bolt size. If you find that you have a stripped bolt head, you CAN DEFINITELY get a new plug from the dealer....they're usually a better quality than you'll find elsewhere. If not take the old one that you removed with vice grips or an E-Z-Out, and match the threads at an auto parts store....check new and old plug with a nut. Please use a 6 point socket, not a twelve point, and not a 12 point box wrench either. I agree with not leaving oil in there for too long, as acids accumulate in the oil of internal combustion engines.... I cannot believe you didn't know the quantity of oil, as its stated in the owner's manual of every car I've ever owned. On my 2019 Volt, the capacities are beginning in page 334, & continue on page 335. 4.2 quarts with filter, or 4.0 liters, -This may be on a different page, on an older Volt (like the one in the video), and could possibly be a different quantity. Use clean oil to lube the oil filter seal, not dipped into the dirty oil pan.

I can't believe nobody jacks up a volt properly. That doesn't happen with corvettes. You cannot use a jack on the pinch weld fold. At best it will bend it. The only jack points are inside, the mickey mouse ears. The frame rail pinch weld lips are used for shop lifts with adapters that raise the whole car evenly. I'm using them to place jack stands, with adapters, because the force is only supportive, so similar to the shop lifts. The 2.5 ton hypertough walmart low profile $60 jack actually fits completely underneath the volt to where the jack points are. Just make sure the valve is tight and use pliers to open the valve slowly, the volt is very heavy.

@zio205iq2
@zio205iq2 7 жыл бұрын
Vince Stripling, change oil like normal engine, due to the rev patterns of the Chevy volt, it revs high when using gasoline ICE, higher rpm patterns than a standard motor in a normal car. My experience in racing motors has shown me that any metal in the oil such as aluminum, or cylinder wear, can damage bearings, so to avoid that, I suggest changing the oil and air filter on a 6000 mile basis. Under high rpms small rock dust, sands and concrete dust get pulled through a car's air filter. If they aren't there in abundance, when the volt ICE highway revs, they won't flow through the air filter. On my 12,000 mile change I noticed an abundance of fine sand in the filter, and lots of small aluminum glitter in the oil, which shows rock dust making it through, as I have seen this in other cars which race their motors.
@zio205iq2
@zio205iq2 7 жыл бұрын
the magnetic oil drain plug collects the cylinder wear particulates which actually are hardened steel, due to Thier scraped creation, so you wouldn't want them flowing throughout your engine they would damage it. Old tuners will tell you that a magnetic drain plug will extend your engine life in a car that has to rev high to perform.

Daniel Miller, I wouldn't bother to chalk them, but it's a good idea to chock them. I prefer ramps, but I mount them to a 2X12, that's a bit longer than the ramp. That does two things; It lets the car raise a bit so the front fascia doesn't hit the ramp (the car is low), and also keeps the ramp from scooting away from you, as you're trying to go up it....especially on polished concrete floors in most garages. Sometimes, it's necessary to place another board ahead of the one the ramp is mounted to, and then add another, shorter one, on top of the boards, butting up against the ramp itself,
