How to Change the Sandpaper on your Drum Sander

This is a detailed video of my process for installing sandpaper on my Jet 25/50 drum sander. For the most part this should work for drum sanders of all sized and even other brands like Grizzly and shop fox. I also include some details as to what sandpaper I use and what to expect when you buy a drum sander for your shop.

Good stuff! Here's some more. Run a long piece of 1/8" Masonite through the table saw to make a 3" wide strip. Lay the original sandpaper strip on it and trace around the angled ends. Cut the Masonite on the lines. This becomes your template. If you don't want to store the template full length, cut it in half in the middle; you can install a hinge in the middle too. To clean stuff off the paper the rubber eraser won't touch, remove the paper, roll it up, and soak it in a small round container filled with Simple Green or any of the available saw blade cleaners like CMT or Woodcraft. Soak overnight and then scrub it with a stiff brush the next day. Rinse well with water and roll it back up loosely. Place it in a warm spot to dry. Even though the liquid cleaner gets filthy with wood resins, etc., you can reuse it many times over. Run it through a coffee filter to remove the large chunks.

Totally agree. I have an old Performax. (and a much newer 16" open ended widebelt). I still use the Performax from time to time. I hated it in the beginning, as putting on the sandpaper, and cleaning the sandpaper was a pain. But with practice, it got so I could run thousands of bdft thru it. Don't try to take too big a pass, (that is one reason I got the widebelt). Make sure the sandpaper is tight, any possible overlap of paper will surely burn the wood and the paper. It is an abrasive planer, yes, but it needs to make it in small passes. Once you have a burn mark on the paper, (you will see it on the wood) then immediately take your eraser to the burn mark. Once that doesn't work, put that paper aside and clean it with the mason jar full of special green or whatever. Don't run your wood too close to the inside edge of your rolls, as that is where the paper might be the loosest.

Good video! You can use zirconia sand paper too, it lasts longer and doesn’t clog up. You can have a little bit of a gap between the paper too.

Well done. All the key points were covered. I have seen over the years that different brands/mfg of sandpaper does stretch with use. Disappointed that they decided to go with a handle style height adjuster rather than the older wheel style. It is a personal preference, my dual drum has a handle and really not that big a deal.

I've waited years for a good clean concise video on how to replace the paper on a drum sander. You could have included the length of the angle of the end being that most Jet drum sanders have a 5" drum. I have a Jet 10-20 so the drum is shorter but the dimensions for the ends will be the same. I have the problem of the paper tearing off after 1 or 2 passes no matter how light a pass I make. You're so right about the expense of pre cut paper. Too bad the drum sander doesn't have a dust extraction fan like my planer. Great video!! Keep going!!

The paper is tearing off probably because it's not completely tight on the drum. You can test for this by pressing a finger against each wrap and pushing longitudinally (in line with the drum's axle) left and right. If the paper slides on the drum's surface, it's loose and will rip up when sanding.

I have struggled with the sandpaper on my Supermax 19x38 so damn much I am about to sell it. I went though 3 rolls yesterday trying to sand one 5 foot x 15 inches yesterday. Was I frustrated? I just call it a day and will try tomorrow again. This is the best Video I have seen. Thank you for taking time to share.

I have a Ryobi WDS1600. It was a miserable job to change out sanding rolls on this machine and keep it tight to the drum. The clips are extremely difficult to operate, even with the special tool to operate them. After several years of frustration, I bought a hook and loop kit from Grizzily. The difference is incredible. A little difficult to apply the adhesive backed hook and loop to the drum, but once done it is so much easier to change sandpaper rolls.

nice video. Thanks. I've lost more sandpaper than I care to think about. Jet sent me new clips, but I'm willing to risk one more strip to see if I can avoid taking it apart.My problem is that I get it tight like you showed yours and then it keeps loosening until the paper just gives and comes out of the clips. Hopefully your method works, but it's exactly what I do except the test strip.

Great video. Took 3 rolls to get it right. I have a question though. I have a JET 18/36 and the JET rolls are 3 3/8" wide. The rolls that you cut to length are 3" wide. How does that work on this machine? I'm guessing I need the rolls cut longer than the JET pre cut. Please advise.

If you would have marked the paper outline with the abrasive towards the floor you could have maker the cut line easier.

Why would you need to throw it away? Even if it's "dark and burnt black " you can still clean it up and save yourself loads of money. Once you've done with the sanding paper and you think it's knackered all you need to do with it is roll it back up and place it into a Mason jar, fill the jar with tablesaw blade cleaning solution put the lid on the jar then give it a good shake. This covers all the sanding paper with the solution then leave it overnight. 24hr later take the lid off the jar and remove the sanding paper then unroll it on the lawn or driveway placing something heavy on each end. Obviously the paper needs to be face upwards, take a hosepipe and just wash off anything that is left behind on the sanding paper then let dry. Once this is done you'll be able to make use it again and again. P.s there is video's of this whole process on KZfaq. Look for the KZfaq channel Stewmac. He has a very good video showing you the whole process of cleaning the sanding paper saving you thousands over the lifetime of your drum sander. 😊 Good luck and hope that this will help you to save your money 😊
