I started bowling in the late 50s and by the summer of 1961 shot the first sanctioned 300 at that 16 lane house. I threw almost a full spinner which left a wide track on my ball. I used tape as you show when I practiced and it showed how the ball spun for about 30 feet and gradually the roll got higher until it became what we called a 3/4 roll. It went pretty straight until it started to roll. That's when it made a left turn into the pocket. The lanes were maple and pine, maintained by lane man who kept the lanes oiled and buffed. Instead of patterns like we see today, his goal was to buff and oil each lane the same every night. Back then it didn't matter where you bowled or what lane you were on, each lane played a little differently. I was successful because I could get a sharp hook into the pins. It was fun, especially the pot games. I wonder if the guys still have those. Thanks for listening. I could probably go on all night but it will be another time. Bob

I believe there is a proper angle the ball needs to be rotating as it hits the pocket. If it is too little (vertical) it leaves a weak ten. But if there is too much axis rotation (horizontal) then its blasts the pin around the ten. The ten pin issue supersedes the problem of needing more hook, which I address with a ball change and keep my axis rotation constant and modest. Plus, not being big or young I lose too much power if I'm not behind the ball.

I struggle to execute the mechanics of access rotation correctly. There are many times where instead of bringing my hand around the ball, I’m rotating my wrist. Sometimes so extremely that I end up with my hand almost on top of the ball and it being in a flat spin while it’s skidding. Any tips on internalizing the correct motion?

Storm has a find your ball function on their website, and they ask spin axis. Could you do a video showing an axis of 50 degrees and 70 degrees? I guess average is 50-70 but don't really know and would like to know before I spend 100+ dollars on a ball. Also would like to see the difference in axis height. I know what my ball looks like when I throw it, would just like to put in the proper information.

I'm in the same boat... starting out "for real this time" and am seriously battling to get any hook using any method. I'm getting a good "forward roll", but when trying to hook, the ball goes off to the left with no apparent axis rotation... just a ball rolling forward in the wrong direction. I know my release method is the problem, but I guess practice practice practice is what it's going to take.

Ok ... I just got a Astro Physix. The SOB really hooks at about the 42 ft break point. When I say hooks, if I'm lucky it'll take out the 4 & 7 pins before dying a quick death. I start on 42, through to the 15. I think my problem is speed. I have a rev rate of 200-217. Just watched your ball speed video. Another coach suggested shortening the 3rd step (4 step approach from the rear dots.) and stretching out the slide. ... Now I'll shut up and listen! Thanks.

Andrew Ashley I would suggest that at your release, your elbow should be pointed behind you (not flung out) and arm close to your body. Your hand should be positioned behind the ball. Practice that and depending on what the ball is doing, you can start to move your hand position further towards the side of the ball. Elbow should always be pointed to the back and not chicken winged

Most pro shops drill a ball's thumb hole directly below the middle point of the finger holes which forces your hand to twist to the left if you are a right hander in order to get your thumb into the thumb hole. I find this uncomfortable and puts your hand into an unnatural position. To me it seems better to have the thumb hole placed to the left side of the middle finger hole. My question is: Does this in any way affect the axis rotation?
@ArtOfBowling
@ArtOfBowling 5 жыл бұрын
Axis rotation happens as we come around the ball at release, how much we come around the ball determines how much rotation we have. Where you drill your thumbhole is a compfort thing my thumbhole is directly below my indext finger. I have a friend whose thumbhole is far past his indext finger another that is under the middle finger. It works for them. Drillings are A personel Thing. Hummmm...that might be a great topic to discuss with people.

Tony B I actually like the power lift inserts and have been using them for a minute. I took your advice about the hole being too far back. It must be I changed my release in the last six months, and the way I’m cranking the ball is not working with my regular drill. I went to my pro and he is redrilling that hole, moving it a little closer. Fingers crossed. Getting plenty of revs, and truth be told, I like the way I’m throwing now, but only been bowling for a little over two years, so I don’t get what’s going on, but hope this works cause I don’t have much time before the national championships.

This is true, staying underneath the ball is what controls your axis tilt. Axis rotation is the effect you are putting on the ball as you turn the it at the bottom of the swing.

@supertiki500
@supertiki500 5 жыл бұрын
Better. Your ball will react as soon as it gets to the dry, and if your axis rotation is greater you will get more ball reaction. If the lanes have a long oil pattern, you will want the absolute most ball reaction you can get, thus more axis tilt is the most effective. If you struggle to get more axis tilt, just continue to move right and try to play the outside of the lanes for earlier reaction.
