I don't understand the negative comments. This is a great video. Not everyone lives near an archery shop and not many shops will put up with a customer spending hours tweaking his bow on their press. I have been considering buying my own press so I can work on my bow at home. After watching this, there is no need. This is a great solution to a universal problem. And I would say this is a good starting now that I could pass down to my son when he is older.But the package was missing the release and a nock was missing from one arrow.Dealing with customer support was terrible. They suggested I buy a new release rather than correct their own quality control issue because it’s to expensive for the. to ship it out from China.Update: manufacturer got back to me and resolved the issue. I retract the above statement.

This works on most bows I've seen. You won't damage your cams. I use an aluminium rod wrapped in duct tape. Works pretty well just make sure your strings are in the cam runners BEFORE you begin putting pressure on the string. The prices some shops want is absurd. Its a 10 minute job to swap a string, yet some charge anywhere from $15 - 150.

Cont. When you chalk a cam, you're only using about 12 lbs. of pressure; when you use a bow press - you're probably using around 100+ lbs. of pressure.. Which can flex & bend your riser if not pressed properly. We have literally done this to THOUSANDS!!!! of bows over the last 27 years -- we have had ZERO problems or complaints from customers -- whom we have done this in front of! They appreciate someone who knows what they are doing to correct & fix their bows.

just the same as breaking down a APA bow really. one improvement...you can stand on the center serving (protected between clean ply or summit) and pull the bow up to insert your allen wrench. I use this method on a PSE stinger I own except I also place rubber protectors on the limbs after inserting the hex wrench and let down the hex wrench on to those protectors (made out of thick bicycle tyre cut offs). the protectors have the added benefit of increasing the string let off a tad more. the hole you are looking for on a stinger x is the small round hole visible just to the inside of the limbs when fully let down. about 3mm in diameter on its own between the limb and timing mark for performance setting. hth

APA archery - also incorporated this into some of their bow designs on purpose and it comes with a pin held inside the bow and then you release it and block the cams which have "pin holes" engineered into them so you don't need a bow press to change strings or cables.

There is a way to press your bow without using a bow press that is easy, simple and cheap. First turn your limb bolts down to the lowest poundage allowed. Then on both limbs, take some soft sash cord or nylon rope and at the bottom of the fork where the limbs split apart for the cams, tie the same type knot as used for a string loop with the rope ends coming out through between the fork split and tie the 2 ends together (a square knot will work). Then take a ratchet strap with hooks, hook the ends to the loops you tied to the limbs, pull the ratchet strap tite and ratchet your limbs together until your string and cables are as loose as you need them to be, while making sure your ratchet strap is clear of all bow mounted accessories. Works like a charm...done it this way numerous times with zero damage to cams or limbs. On spit limbs, you may have to make 2 wraps around each limb to keep the rope from slipping if your bow doesn't have completely parallel limbs.

This is perfectly safe,and is done WAAAAAY more than you think,at Pro shops across the country every single day. If you aren't in the room,when they change strings,adjust idle lean etc etc...i guarantee u 90% of the time its done this way. Think of it like this...if your draw weight is 70#...thats all the,pressure thats being put on the cam and limb...no more. The archery industry has the public brainwashed into believing they need a $1000 bow worked on by only us "pros".

Aren't a lot of the people freaking out here missing an important point ? The video poster gives the only mention about halfway down the comments... You are not doing a full draw, you are just pulling enough to chock the first available hole on the cam. This is only going to be a fraction of the draw weight. That said, I am not crazy about the small allen wrench method. I use a long, fat as possible wood dowel. I am very safety conscious, but I am not paying a bow shop to work on my Amazon budget bow for something as simple as this.

Thanks for the video, I was already doing this before I found it though. To all the naysayers, my wife's bow has camo vinyl decals covering the entire limb, the Allen wrench doesn't even indent the vinyl. Like the man says, if you don't feel comfortable, don't do it. If you have Velcro closures on your shoes, because you cannot tie them yourselves, this method may not be for you.

i could understand doing this at hunting camp if you were far from a bowshop in an emergency.but the allen wrench could damage the outer finish wich could lead to the limb splintering,causing the owner to have a real bad day! not advisable as a reliant method for tuning your bow.

For those of you who do not understand or cannot grasp the concept of chalking a cam on a bow.. I'm sorry. However for those of you who DO understand and want to work on your own equipment, this is an easy & simple solution. The wrenches will not mark up your cams or limbs, if you feel that - use something with a rubber coating (we've used the rubber coated handle of pliers or even round screw drivers).

Alpine supplied my F1 Fireball with carbon rods to change strings using this method. If the manufacturer has no problem with it, its not a problem.

Had my Helim in for waranty work and the peep would turn a tad after . Knew what to do but my old press won't work on those limbs .After the video it took 30 sec. to fix and also noticed my cable needed a half twist also to be in DC . THANK YOU !

what i ment is that this info also helped me to change my draw weight.. i think.. well there was all this talk about bow presses and stuff in the manual.. and what i should do if i wanted to adjust the bow but no method.. now it's maxed.. i think.. well.. cant blame enyone if i hurt myself with it somehow but i think it's all good.. :D

Used this same exact method last year in Alaska brown bear hunting. I always keep a extra string with me that has approx 100 shots on it.

A bow press will damage any bow just bad easy. It's all about who the operator is. So yes this can be done with a competent person that knows bows and physics. Besides you can use a peg board to do the same thing. It locks the bow down using wooden dowels.

Friend of mine's son did something wrong and his strings are hanging loose. I can see how the strings have to go back on. Looks like the only way I'll be able to get them back on is to press the bow. It's a Browning Micro Midas 3 - a youth model. I'll only press it enough to get the strings / cables back on. I don't know if he took any twists out of the strings - wish now my friend didn't know I have a bow press.

Me and a buddy of mine changed the string on my hoyt without the tool. Took a lot of patience and muscle and about 45 mins

Done this on my Mathews many many times. I use a round steel dowel and it does nothing to the cam and nothing the the limb...paint, etc. yes a press is best but this method has worked for me for years on many different bows. The guy who said...”my bow exploded”...is most likely full of it... he’s just trying to ad his 2 cents of nonsense. What do you do when you’re on that big hunt out in the mountains and you have a malfunction? If you’re smart, you have extra cables and strings to back you up. Do you pull out your bow press in the backwoods...or fix it easily like this. No brainer.

(already Robin Hood at 30 meters first time out) But being a newbie have been looking at that timing whole wondering if the string or cable needs to centered up there. I have a question about my new bow, i can't shoot with it , the wheels aren't moving and the string are to tense to even shoot with. what is wrong with my new bow or is it something i need to fix my self? is it like an attitude with the bow string?

yes it can but these presses were designed to use on these bows and that is why bow manufacturers must approve them bc if not it can void there warranty. You would also be surprised how many more customers appreciate seeing it put in a press, rather than whatever is laying on the bench being put in between there cam on their barand new 800 to thousand dollar bow.

Do you have anything on re-stringing a Browning Micro Adrenaline Bow? Some how the kid broke one of the cables. So I got a new set of cables, but do not know the route the string should go to properly install string.

Cant you just back the bow off a lot and then restring like this? Im thinking about an in the field application on a split limb solo cam.

Would that damage your cams if you continue to do it? Because it looks like it's under quite a bit of stress... I'd still use a bow press for this because it's safer and more reliable

if bow presses aren't needed, why would pro shops, whose typical life span is 5 yrs and struggle constantly with finances invest in an expensive press? Oh and you can get a pocket press for field use or at home for $50-100 with much less risk of damage to bow and a whole lot safer.

Bad.. while the press is pressing where it should (the limbs) what you are doing is adding stress to the cam spoke... bad.

I've done this succesfully. But please use something stronger than allen wrench. I used a big screw driver in place of allen wrench. Good video though. Nice to have something to irked some of those greedy pro shop. Imagine, they charge like 100 dollars to replace the strings which I provided btw.

I have a Bear Kodiak compound. It has been in my garage for several years in the heat and cold. It has been over 10 years since I last used it. Should the cables and string be replaced ?

i have a fishing compond bow, made by mcpherson and the power cable broke, and when i took it to a bow shop they told me they could not fix it, that i had to contact mcpherson archery to get the original cord... i was wondering if you know of another way of fixing it? mcpherson archery does not answer emails :( how much is a custom power cord?

urgh my brother ( pretty much first time he tried archery ) just broke my bear cruzer g2 by letting the arrow fall off the string while firing it, the string has detached and I dont have a bow press. It was set around lowest draw weight though maybe 25 or 30 pounds ?

Actually I am a certified Hoyt, PSE, and Bowtech technician. Also the shop I used to work at was a Mathews Dealer as well and I worked on them but left before being sent to become a certified Mathews tech. And I do own my own shop as well. Also the portable presses are very nice and I am aware that full size presses are expensive. But to show this method will hurt and destroy bows. And severely injure people as well. So happy hunting from the appinionated asshole :)

Will this work on the Halon? I have a portable press but I don't believe it'll work on the split limbs

I would advise against this method. After viewing another video similar to this I tried the method several times on my Parking Blackhawk. I ended up damaging the cam. The cam is still fully functional, but there are large indentations from where the cam was braced up against the limb. I used a large allen wrench that I put tape around. I figured the tape would help reduce any marks to the cam. I was wrong! The marks look so bad I'm contemplating on getting a new cam. The cam appears to be made out of aluminum and the metal is soft. I’m afraid that further use of this method may permanently damage the cam.

Everybody I've seen says to never, EVER stick ANYTHING in a cam to immobilize it. While the cam as a whole is built to withstand the weight of a drawn bow limb, a single spoke is not. You put a whole new kind of torque on the limb and cam. I just bought me a bowmaster portable bow press. It's actually one of the only portable presses that is approved by Bear Archery that won't void your warranty if you use it on the bow. Just a thought.

If you're going to chock cams like this to replace a string without a press.. would it at least be best to use something softer than solid metal? Hard wood or pens with rubber grips would be perfect maybe? The metal could buckle it. Anyone have any better approach to this rather than jamming allen keys into the holes? I mean, maybe that's still fine? As long as you gently let the cam rest on it, not let it clunk right? :f

Don't try this on a PSE as I've heard from alot of people that the cams shatter.

I fully understand the idea of chalking the cams but to support this idea as something you can do anytime is not right. If this was something supported by the industry than many people would be doing it all ready and there would be chalks made specifically for this (like there is for car tires) but they don't. if you want to do your own work on a bow go buy a bowmaster bow press or someother portable bow press. maybe you guys should make a video showing how to use one of these. THE PROPER WAY.
