Handlebars are a pretty important part of you bike, but bars are not a component that you'd regularly change unless you're looking to change your position, move to a more comfortable bar shape or width, or you've damaged them for whatever reason. In this video, Ollie takes you through changing your bars so you can do so with ease!

Good video, very useful as i was recently given an the halfords 13 innate alpha cyclocross bike. (I know its not the best) but as someone who had cheap mountain bikes growing up its a huge leap forward. My plan is to slowly replace the not so good components on it for much better and lighter used components from ebay etc. Alot of people will choose an entire groupset like dura ace for example but the alpha starts life at 12.2 kg so alot lighter than the bikes i had before but not as light as i would like. I dont care if all the components are from different manufaturers or groupsets as long as they are able work together. I want the lightest i can find or are willing to pay for. With a rule, no 1 part can cost more than 120 quid. 2nd hand, thats not impossible. I'd love to see a series on individual components swapping with lightness in mind and various options. Focussing each video on one specific component, what makes are the lighteset 10 say and how much you can pick them up for 2nd hand compared to the sometimes ludicrous new prices.

I have a 22.2 bar I love on a vintage Univega. Only problem, the stem is 25.4 😭 For about 10 years I've had a jank electrical tape shim in there that needs replacing much more often than the tape does, but it's worth it. Tiny bullhorn bars! Came here looking for advice on finding the right size bars for replacement bc it varies so wisely.

So with the proliferation of “integrated bar-stem design” and hydraulic disc brakes on high end road bikes, this simple swap may be the thing of the past. Not to mention the availability of replacement part if it were damage in a crash, and the part cost (unless manufacturers can agree on standardized design).

They did an interview with a Sky mechanic who did it the opposite way to Ollie. He had an equally rational reason why it should be done as those who favour Ollie's method. It's about personal preference and there are probably bigger things to worry about.

Can you make a video about increasing the width of your breaks to fit wider rim wheels.
@michaelmappin4425
@michaelmappin4425 7 ай бұрын
This should be pretty simple. Generally, cables are cut to extend about 3 inches past the brake's pinch bolt. I have this issue every time I switch between road wheels and mountain wheels. I simply loosen the pinch bolt. Put the wheels on and then adjust the positioning of the cable for the new wheels. Tighten down, and you're good.

#GCN Tech: A few years back I upgraded by Ultegra rear cassette from a 11-28t to a 12-30t to give me more hill climbing range (lots of hills in my area). However, sometimes I miss my highest gear with the 11t. I'd like to swap out the 12t with an 11t making a 11-30t cassette. However, I've read mixed reviews on what spacers and if the 12t lock nut needs to be replaced with one for an 11t and a possible 'skip' issue when shifting from the 11t to or from the 13t cog. What can you tell me about the hardware if the 'skip' issues is significant or not?
@michaelmappin4425
@michaelmappin4425 7 ай бұрын
I normally run an 11-25 as my area is quite flat. I have a set of mountain wheels with an 11-34. Changing wheels always requires adjustment of the high and low limits screws, as well as a tweak on the indexing. It seems to me that you probably just need a turn or two on your barrel adjuster with perhaps some slight adjustment of your high limiter.

#askgcntech Hi Ollie & Manon I’m a big and heavy rider (1.92 and 85kg), and on my Tarmac I have rim brakes with carbon wheels. On long descents I sometimes find very hard to fully stop and the brake shoes and track gets clearly overheated. Should i consider using a wheelset with aluminum brake track? (I don’t want to buy for now a new DB bike)

As a person who knows the horrors of busted carbon, yes, you should. Get aluminum wheels for mountains and do not mix your brake pads. Pads used on aluminum can damage your carbon wheels. My trip to mountain routine is change from carbon pads to aluminum pads and then mount my aluminum wheels. I always have to adjust the rear derailer because of the mountain cassette.

I've found that the only real way to wrap bar tape is to make an appointment with a local mechanic and pay him or her twenty quid to do it for me. I've watched the videos on wrapping bar tape and tried to do it myself five times at this point. It's simply not something to DIY. It's like baking meringue . . . just one of those things you pay to have done by a professional.
