This is a video on how to carry out a preventative maintenance check to look for leaking orings. This is specifically aimed at people with the older versions (pre mid 2022) that don't have the newer fittings on the boilers.
Orings are your front-line protection against many other faults that can occur on the higher-end Breville machines👇
TIP: The best tip someone gave me to check for leaks (that i didn't know before making this video) is to put a plastic tube to you ear and use it like a stethescope on each of the ports. You'll be able to hear leaks that you cannot see sometimes.
Please like and subscribe to help the channel grow. Thanks.
Enjoy!
Note: I've not seen any evidence that the probe orings are actually made from Fluorosilicone (FVMQ). The stock ones seem to be a lighter blue than the FVMQ ones - suggesting they are just blue coloured silicone, which makes more sense as most compounds of Fluorosilicone don't handle high temperatures as well.
I've always used silicone on my machines and they are still going well after a good few years.
Let me know your experience!
Having spent the last 5 yrs fixing these Breville machines, I have a fair idea as to what things normally fail and I also know it can be difficult sourcing the right parts - especially if you don't want to buy in bulk, so i've put together two kits that have all the parts i think you'll need to fix almost all common issues you're likely to experience - especially the ones that prevent you using your machine.
This is something that you can keep in your cupboard and gain some peace of mind from.
It also helps me towards funding my time to make these videos and hopefully help you save on service costs too.

Do you have the newer model that doesn't suffer from these problems? Let us know below if you've still had leaks in the newer compression fittings.

While working on fixing my needle valve problem (which causes the hot water spout to drip water, and can affect brew pressure) I came across this video and literally just watched it yesterday. Low and behold I discovered not 1 leak but 2 and evidence they had been there for a while.....sigh. Problem Avoidance versus Problem Reaction - I wish I had watched this earlier and taken the time to change those out ever other year.... And why Why WHY don't o-ring kits include the retention clips???? I dropped 2 down into the boiler nether regions and lost forever....made replacements out of stainless steel paper clips but seriously....silicone grease on my fingers + tiny clips = gone baby gone. Thank you for the great video....and 920XL owners, don't be like me - crack that lid and take a look once a year.

A couple of suggestions as i've just done this task on my machine over the past couple of days. Edit the video title to mention O-rings as this didn't come up in search and it's a pity because it's a very clear one. I think as this concentrates on prevention rather than a full O-ring job, maybe that's why it doesn't mention the 5mmx2mmx1.5mm white silicone O rings at the bottom of the probes but those were the ones that mine was leaking from, not the blue O rings at the top. I've still got small leaks in the filler tube fittings but waiting on parts for those :)

Thanks I will change the title. I didn't mention the probe orings as i was going to do a seperate video just on probes at some point, and yes this is a general prevention video so didn't want to get too down in the weeds with the not so common stuff. thanks

Very helpful channel, thanks. My BES920xl is leaking over the top of the portafilter. I'll try replacing the silicone gasket first, although doesn't look worn. There appears to be an area of wear on the plastic collar inside the grouphead. I'm having trouble finding a replacement collar - do you have a source?

Thankyou! Do you mean can you buy a new boiler and install it onto your older machine? Yes you can, but you'll need to buy all the conversion tubes too to convert from your new steam boiler to your old style coffee boiler. You'll also need to buy the newer NTC like this: www.ebay.com.au/itm/204587634550 all in all, quite an expense!

Lately I'm finding myself having to coarse up the grind so the pump wouldnt stop right after preinfusion and i could still get a half decent shot. If I wanted to do a complete overhaul of my machine would you have a list of parts I would need? Thanks in advance.

It's been through a few changes since 2011. The most notable were adding the boiler drain ports when going from the BES900 to the BES920. This is visible by the rubber cover on the right above the drip tray. There were some other changes inside on the steam pump and group collar too. Then compression fittings on the heat exchange ports were added next (not sure of exact year) then in 2022 they changed them all over to the newer type

Hello, I just bought a used, 8 months old BDB and having slight problem after powering it on first time at home. While trying it at the owners house, it worked fine. Now at home it gurgles whenever I turn water dispensing on. I can see air pockets traveling back and forth in the line going from hx to brew boiler. Steam works fine. Water dispensing seems a bit inconsistent at the beginning of preinfusion however pressure builds up fine. Temperature is also stable. Seems a bit strange that there would be a leak on one of the connections to the hx or brew boiler. And if so, would the pressure be going down while using blind basket? Pump is also working fine. Have set preinfusion on the lowest pressure and it's working normaly.
@BrevTech
@BrevTech Ай бұрын
All these machines gurgle to some extent from what i've found, its when it become constant gurgling that you might have a problem. Yours could be a leak on the HX line, but more likely its just water being cooked in the HX to 130c. The best tip someone gave me to check for leaks (that i didn't know before making this video) is to put a plastic tube to you ear and use it like a stethescope on each of the ports. You'll be able to hear leaks that you cannot see. I'm going to add this tip to the description actually.

The orings do need changing on those, but more often than not the parts to fail on those before orings are usually the solenoids. The elbow connectors too. Your issue certainly sounds like a solenoid isn't closing properly - i'd say it is the 3-way one. You can sometimes get lucky by cleaning them but most of the time they'll need replacing.

It's about a 30min job and not very difficult. About 8 screws to remove the lid and back case, then you can get to it. There are plenty of YT guides, It's on my todo list to make one too. Hello, I've just stumbled across this and I have an issue with gurgling at idle on my bes920, and the temperature keeps increasing. From what I can tell there is an air leak somewhere. Do you know how i could fix this? If i draw water up as its heating up, i can quickly pull a shot at temp, but will only be around 7bar, then the gurgling returns and i can't use it any more. Thanks in advance!
@BrevTech
@BrevTech 2 ай бұрын
The temp increase is a faulty triac board. You'll likely find you have a leak inside that is letting out steam onto the triac board. I would turn it off at the wall until it's fixed. When the triac board isn't working it will constantly heat up the boiler which can often cause the thermal fuse to pop. I have other videos covering the triac board if you are handy. Otherwise get it serviced asap. thanks
@kilkVal
@kilkVal 2 ай бұрын
@@BrevTech Sorry I should have been more specific - the temperature will rise until it reaches 93 degrees, then it will sit there very steady. Sometimes (more often than not) after a pulling a mediocre shot, the screen starts flashing and the temperature will begin to rise, and the gurgling starts. With the lid off, I can see air bubbles going up and down some of the pipes. Also the steam wand constantly drips (even when off). Do you still think it's the triac board? Thanks for responding
@BrevTech
@BrevTech 2 ай бұрын
@@kilkVal it’s hard to say as it sounds like you have more than one problem. It sounds like it needs a good overall service. Orings, pump and Steam valve service would be my next steps. So the temp doesn’t go over 93c at all?
@kilkVal
@kilkVal 2 ай бұрын
@@BrevTech Maybe so, I did buy it 2nd hand and it's been pretty decent so far until recently. It does exceed 93c after awhile, but not immediately, as in it doesnt just continue to rise. From a post on a forum it seems like there is air in (i want to say the heat exchange) and a temperature thing in there which is supposed to be submerged is now exposed to the air, causing it to miscalculate and heat up - but unfortunately they didn't really go into a fix outside of "there is probably air getting into your system"
@BrevTech
@BrevTech 2 ай бұрын
The gurgling can occur when air gets into the coffee line, which is usually down to either a leak on the heat exchanger ports or a faulty pump not providing enough water to the coffee boiler. Another reason, is that your triac board is overheating the boiler. I think you could have a mix of both - given you said you had poor pressure. Take a look at my other video about the self check menu. This will show you how to measure the temps of the 3 boilers and you'll find out which one is at fault. Wait for the machine to go over 93c, then enter the menu to see. Not trying to sell you anything, but if you are wanting to fix the machine yourself, then something like the survival kit I sell would suit you, as i think you're going to need quite a lot of the parts from it.

Admittedly, I am pretty particular about the quality of the water I use, backflushing every day, and running a cleaning cycle weekly. But this is pretty similar to what baristas do with their 10's-of-thousand dollar machines daily. Your car is probably a better comparison than a fridge. You service your car at regular intervals if you want it to keep running smoothly. Same can be said for all coffee machines being worked daily, even the cafe quality machines.
