For diamonds, or any type of stone and or jewelry, the buyer can ask for signed traceable certification. Proper certification must also include the rating specifications for what they have if and when applicable. The certification can also include the value at the time of purchase. To insure a diamond or any jewelry a signed and registered certification is required. The insurance company would require a copy.

If you have to go through all this effort to see the difference between a fake and the real thing then what's the point? If it's so hard to tell the difference then you might as well save some money and get a fake. In my opinion diamonds are boring and overpriced.

If its out of the setting - go for visual optics. You can use this method for colored stones as well - it will tell you approximate refraction, chemical signatures in colored stones, cubic vs other systems and a host of other things, all with the naked eye, a pair of tweezers and a point source light.

Buy a diamond tester on ebay & test all your diamonds at home. If you don't know how a diamond tester works, google it on the internet there are probably videos & Instructions on how to use one. CZ's also scratch glass so that's not a valid test.

I have a diamond that is listed as zero fluorescence on the certificate. Under a black light it truly does not fluoresce. According to diamond experts I know it is desirable as the diamond always looks sparkly clear (never cloudy) in any light.

Misleading video, just because a diamond doesn't show impurity, it doesn't mean that it's fake, it could be a synthetic diamond. Synthetic diamonds are real diamonds. It's just so pure that you don't see the impurities. What makes a diamond diamond is that their carbon atoms tetrahedrally bonded together in a covalent network lattice (check wikipedia). I personally encourage the use of synthetic diamonds because they don't involve any violence in the making.

Look at the Girdle. (The Edge) Look at the edge with your Jeweler's Loupe. Is the Girdle Faceted? Most manufactures of CZ's do not take the time to facet the Girdle as they are production oriented. If the Girdle looks like Ground Glass...YOU LOSE. On the other hand if the Girdle is faceted that is a good indicator of authenticity. Of course you can just allow a professional to authenticate your stone. Any Pawn Shop has a Thermal Conductivity Diamond Tester. Most Jewelry Stores do. They will be able to tell you and...without a Financial Cost. Diamond Testers cost about $50 if you want to purchase one online. However there is a new material with the same Thermal Conductivity...Moissanite. (Your fog test will also work on Moissanite and give you a False Positive.) The Diamond Tester will give a False Positive on Moissanite.. However Diamond is Singly Refractive while Moissanite is Doubly Refractive. Hmmm...Optical Properties??? Use your Polariscope. With crossed filters place the stone on the bottom Filter. Rotate the Stone. If it is a Diamond you will not be able to see the stone no matter what the orientation. However Moissanite will flash on and off as it is being rotated under crossed filters. Polariscopes run about $300. The best way is to go your Jeweler. I have been doing this for a Quarter Century...
