How long does a claim take?
The VA publishes the average claim wait times each month. As of May in 2023, the average VA decision wait time is between 3 to 4 months. Keep in mind that these are averages, so the wait time can be shorter or longer depending on your claim.
If you disagree with your rating decision, you have three options regarding how you would like the VA to review your case - and each of them takes a different amount of time to complete.
Remember that, depending on the type of appeal you choose, you may need to spend time gathering new evidence, which will add time to the process before the appeal even begins.
What will make your VA disability claim move faster?
The VA recognizes that some veterans are in situations that don’t allow them to wait years for a claim or an appeal. As a result, it allows veterans to expedite VA disability claims because of financial hardship, homelessness, terminal illness, or age.
Getting your evidence, argument, and documents correct the first time can help. Unfortunately, there is no real secret to getting your benefits quicker. Even once they get everything it takes forever. My C AND P exams were done in jan 3 2024. The VA says they have everything they need. They just wont make a decision on it. Its just crazy how long it takes to make these decisions. I sometimes think its a weapon they use. If its quick to file and appeal it would encourage the veteran to keep trying. But a veteran files and doesnt hear a word from the VA for 6 to 9 months so by the time they get rejected they just give up on it. Its crazy because if someone gets in trouble with the cops theyll have you arrested and on trial and convicted within a few weeks. How is it that you serve the country then file a disability claim and sometimes it takes a year to get a decision?

My claim was only in initial review for one week, is that normal? it's now in step 3.

Will, it's difficult to say normal wait times for the various steps in the initial claim process. It will vary from one decision to the next based on factors like the workload of the RO and the amount of evidence submitted. What we do know is getting an initial decision is currently averaging about 102 days.

Filed my claim on April 4th, 2023 and officially retired from AD on Aug 1st, 2023. As of today (11 Dec 23') I am still waiting! 8 months and status is in review status. The level of service feom the VA is HORRENDOUS. My claims are all pretty basic too. Nothing complicated.

You should have filed a BDD Claim to have it pushed to the front if you never did.

My VA claim was remanded Back to RO 7/11/23 but 12/17/23 from BVA for better development they want another C&P exam I am 65 why do I need another exam when they have DBQ nexus medical records my surgeon medical records they had my records on depression my stay at VA hospital have all so why are remanding cases they have the ability to rate send back over procedures they caused and we didn’t have anything to do in causing this procedure delay not fair to the veterans at all

If the veteran’s disability worsens while they are in the appeals process or their last exam is no longer thought to be accurate, the BVA may remand the claim and have the RO gather additional evidence or request a new medical exam.

Hi - Great video- I don;t understand something: if someone sends in a fully developed claim with all medical evidence, a great nexus letter and personal statement; essentially telling the va here is everything, why would my claim be in evidence gathering? Granted, the received my claim by mail and within one day its up on va.gov already assigned to a reviewer. I just don' understand for how long a fully developed claim will sit in evidence gathering? Thanks

During the evidence-gathering stage, the VA may ask for evidence from your healthcare providers, governmental agencies, or other parties who may have the information they need. Once they have all of the evidence they need, the VA reviews the information. The VA may return to this step repeatedly during the process if they think they need more evidence to make an informed decision. They also may require you to have a C&P exam during this stage of the process. The current average wait time for VA claims is 159.2 days. @@woodslawyers True but this has been in appeal since 2011 and finally up to Cavc in which they admitted there were made in 2 previous DBQ and sent back to get corrected APRIL of 23 then had another DBQ in Jan of 24 now waiting to 2+ yrs to find out if corrections were made. My condition is gettin worse and you would think that this would be fast tracked since the VA and Courts sent it back to get fixed
