The knight and bishop checkmate is one of the more advanced endgame checkmates. The queen and king checkmates are relatively straightforward, and even the two bishop checkmate isn't too bad. However, the knight and bishop checkmate requires a little bit of memorization as well as understanding the underlying techniques. In this video I show you the step by step process for how to checkmate with a knight and bishop.

Watched this at least 3 times start to finish, and watched several sections over and over, and it's finally clicked. I still have to think hard, and occasionally make small mistakes, but for the most part I'm able to do this in under 50 moves, at least when there's no time pressure. Thank you very much!

The hardest part for me is obtaining the initial position from which checkmate can be achieved from a random position, and that is also the part the video spends less time explaining. Are there any techniques for that or does it come down to raw calculation?

A lot of strong chess players fail at this checkmate. If this weren't a difficult enough checkmate, the 50 move rule makes it much harder. This checkmate is so difficult, especially in time pressure, that in blitz or bullet, it's pretty much a guaranteed a draw. There's been a handful of games where my opponent had more material than me and they would easily win. And what I did was traded my remaining material to get the rest of their pawns. And with only a bishop and a knight remaining, my opponents constantly fail to pull off the checkmate. Either the clock or the 50-move rule will kick in and it's a draw. It's very rare to end up in this situation where you need to mate with a knight and a bishop. Don't end up in this situation if you can. It requires a lot of skill to pull this off, not to mention a lot of clock. But if you do learn this checkmate, and can pull it off consistently within the 50 moves, and within time pressure, you're better than a lot of strong chess players out there.

My meager attempt at a solution. Scanning the board I notice that there is a possibility of 'double check'. In check there are generally three choices. Block, take or move. With double check, move is the only option. For block, you can't block the two checks. To take, you can't take the two pieces. Therefore, the only choice for double check is to move. And if there is no safe move, then it is checkmate. Move the white bishop on E2 to B5, giving bishop check and exposing rook check. Black has only two moves for the black king, neither of which gets out of check. My chess terminology needs improvement. May you and yours stay well and prosper.

In the starting position, it's a bit trickier if it's *black's* move and he starts off with 1...Ke8. Now what? It can be done, but it's not very intuitive nor in keeping with the W-method. Basically, white has to find a method to achieve this same position but make it *white's* move. It's a bit awkward. White needs to temporarily push the king back toward the "safe" corner. Knowing when to "waste" a move is important with this method. 1...Ke8 2.Be6 Kf8 3.Bd7 Kg8 4.Bf5 Kf8 Voila! It's the same starting position with white's turn. White can now start the mating net with 5.Bh7. White has to know this little trick, however.

Even if the player with the lone king knows that he cannot be checkmated in the corner *not* commanded by the bishop, he should not make a beeline for that corner. The mating net begins once the king is forced to the edge of the board. Don't help your opponent by going to the edge of the board. The lone king should fight to stay in the *middle* of the board as much as a possible. Resist being forced to the edge/corner. But, eventually, the lone king will have to give ground. Only *then* should the king head for the opposite corner. Most tutorials teach the player how the "net" works and assumes that forcing the king to the edge of the board can be done easily. Actually, it's not that easy if you don't know what you're doing. If the player with the bishop & knight do not expeditiously get the opposing king to the edge of the board, he will likely exceed 50 moves even if he has a perfect understanding of what to do once the opposing king is pinned to the edge of the board. On average, it takes about 30 total moves to force checkmate. More than half of those moves is just forcing the king to the edge of the board. Fumble around with that and knowing the mating pattern won't do you any good. From the starting position in this video, it took 18 perfect moves to force checkmate. It can take far more moves than that to force a king to the edge of the board. So, you can see that any fumbling around will cause you to exceed 50 moves.
